Why Being Normal Is The New Extraordinary
I read a lot of posts about how to be amazing and how to be the hero etc, but for me, the real secret to climbing the ladder is being normal. We’ve all seen the sales pitch in which some guy is in a suit professing how and why you should buy his product or download their latest ebook. Yeah some of them will be a success, but I think you would actually achieve a lot more success by being someone people can relate to.
- Honest
Being honest is paramount to me on this site. That means being honest about who you are, not pretending to be an expert or a ‘pro’ on anything you clearly aren’t. If you don’t understand something, then be honest about it. It doesn’t mean you can’t write about it, just be honest about the angle in which you are coming from.
I constantly admit I’m not a marketing expert or money making guru, being honest about these sorts of things makes you more accessible and people can relate to you, by joining in your journey to learn more about all this.
- Mistakes
When you make a mistake, own up to it. Everyone makes mistakes these days and god knows I have made tons of mistakes, but I own up to them. When you make mistakes people notice, they notice because some want you to trip and others want to see your reaction. Your reaction to a mistake you have made is vital to becoming different to the rest of the websites out there.
The internet is packed full of people who have different personalities to the their normal life, so it’s easy for people to hide behind the lies of everything. You will set yourself above the rest if you are honest about your mistakes. No one is perfect and everyone gets things wrong, but by admitting those mistakes you will create an admiration from people and a bond that they will never forget.
- Hard Work
It drives me mad when I see all the ’2 minute abs’ workout dvd’s etc. I have worked hard all my life, I have done my time in the military carrying huge amounts of kit on operations, 18hr days for weeks on end. I’m really vocal about how hard you need to work on your site if you want people to read it or for your business to grow, the 4hr week doesn’t cut it for me.
I work a 60hr full time job, then work probably 5-7 hrs a day on this site. I have a young family and a house that needs jobs doing to it all the time, so I know how hard you have to work in order to get where you want, but just look at the results this site is having in only 3 months.
I’m a normal guy, motivated yes, maybe a little intense sure, but normal all the same. I’m sat on my couch writing this with the laptop watching MTV base at 0001hrs. When I talk to people on the internet, it’s the same way I talk in real life, ‘brother’, ‘dude’, ‘yeah man’ all that sort of stuff is exactly how I am in real life.
I’m normal as they come, but here the site is 3 months old and I think that’s extraordinary!
What does everyone think?

Hey James,
What do you think of the idea behind Tim Ferriss’ “4-Hour Workweek?”
Twitter: theinfopreneur
says:
yeah I was thinking of that whilst I was writing this to be honest. I actually think sometimes it can be done but in extreme cases, it takes hard work just as you know Gordie, take your site for example, it woldn’t be where it is now which such a great following doing less than an hour a day or 4 hours a week would it?
I really think it takes a lot of bloody hard work, just look at David Risley on the launch of his latest venture or Gary V.
I’d be interested in your view on this too Gordie
Twitter: KiwiGordie
says:
I think blogging full-time is extremely hard work. Tim Ferriss usually on puts up one post a week. He says that’s more than enough. He gets hundreds of comments on his blog. His blog is not there to make money; it’s more to promote his book and himself. I think if someone could be famous before having the blog, it would be ideal.
My ultimate goal will be to apply most of the principles Tim teaches, but that’s going to be in the long term. When I go back to NZ, I’m going to start a business of my own and see how that goes. That’s going to require long hours but will also give me something to share on the my blog too.
My lifestyle design journey is only beginning. I think I’m going to have to get busier before I can cut back on the hours and do more things I enjoy.
Twitter: theinfopreneur
says:
Hey Gordie,
Yeah exactly my point, you have to put the hours in to relax later, train hard, fight easy. There is no way round it really. I honestly think if any of use started out posting once a week then we would have a hard time getting people to listen as quickly.
Twitter: Giveabrick
says:
Having only just started reading Tim’s book (thanks to Matthew
) I can’t formulate a difinitive opinion. However, I’ve got to page 94 and I can see a lot of sense in there. For example, if I have all day to tidy the house, it will take all day as I procrastinate. I can instead run round and get it done in an hour to a much better standard. I know why this should be so but it is!
Looking forward to the rest of it. Will give you my proper opinion then

Hi Eleanor,
I’m being really thick here, I don’t get it. By working harder in a short space of time, is the book suggesting that’s better? Because that’s exactly what I am saying, work harder to give you more time to get things done… Although like I said I don’t fully understand

To me, James, the most extraordinary thing about you is how long you can go with less sleep than I seem to need. I don’t know that I could get along on 5 hours sleep as you seem to be able to do. Once upon a time, my shift hours were changed (without my consent or consultation) at the Post Office and I found I was incapable of sleeping during the day (they stuck me on a night shift). For the next 3 years I survived on roughly 2 hours sleep per night. I have to admit it made more than just a little nutty. One time a supervisor said something to me (I don’t recall what…another symptom – bad memory); it wasn’t a significant something either, but nevertheless I flew into a rage and threw a cart made of wood, steel and canvas weighing probably 60 pounds across the room accompanied by appropriate expletive enhanced commentary. I was lucky not have been fired. Ever since I have been a most zealous guardian of my sleep time. When I got back on day shift and I could sleep again, I could feel my mind healing over the next year or so. It was a very strange experience.

Hey Ray,
2 hrs a night is extreme especially for that amount of time, I think clinicly you should have been supported better, but as for my situation, yeah I know it takes a lot of hard work, well not ‘hard’ work but a lot of hours, it’s all out there for us normal people, you just have to go and get it.
How much sleep do you need now Ray? Would be interested to see the difference

I like to know that there’s a real person behind a blog and by being who through and through in your comments and posts and everything, it shows me that I can trust you and can connect with you.
That’s something everyone can do but far too many do not. Everyone knows I am doing two to three blogs now and am concerned a bit about that but am doing it. I’m not going to lie about something just to get someone to like me or anything.
I am who I am and I think people like you better (especially online) if you’re true with them about who you are than if you try to come across as a salesman or something else.
I personally require about 7 to 8 hours of sleep but every now and again I’ll get much less and am able to for just a few days.

I’d have maybe used ‘Real’ in place of ‘Normal’ but the meaning is the same; you’ll always do your best at anything if you’re yourself and don’t try to hide that.
Sure, you may not be one of those suits up in offices getting paid for your time by professionals. You may even barely justify the time you spend on your blog in terms of monetary reward (in the beginning).
However you’ll have a community of people that listen and care about what you have to say, and that you can relate to and want to do well for.
For me, I think that’s priceless.

As usual you are “Dead On” with your message. Honesty, realism, ordinary: these are the factors that I think are really driving the SM movement. With so much information available to us now, it’s easy to identify the “bs”. As far as hard work, I’m quickly finding that this is true since I jumped into the fray as a newbie blogger. But I love it! I love to write and I think it’s worth every minute…hour….that I put into it. Most of all, I’m enjoying the conversation that exists in the “Blogosphere”. There are so many interesting and helpful people, I really wish that I had started this sooner. Congrats on the 3 months! You and your blog are extraordinary, so keep up the good work!

I get your point but I think you need to tune your thinking. First get over the notion that you are ordinary. You are real. You are transparent. You are straightforward. You are relatable. You work hard. You are focused. You measure your progress and change when you need to. You are in no way normal.

I think that it says a lot for our society that the normal is to perform the least amount that you can do, get away with as much as you can while ‘working’ and taking shortcuts – all believing that this is normal. It’s not that hard to be extraordinary in comparison.
Great article, James and I will have to say that you are definitely not normal and neither are the people who come to this site and comment here. You’ve built up a a great community of extraordinary people around you. Like attracts like
