I find the best videos are the ones that I do off of the cuff and in one take. I love doing them in the car, hence my carcasts. No wrecks yet, but not from the lack of trying.

Nicely put. I don’t know how many times I went into draft and had a topic or article planned and once I just put myself into it, it came out with greater success than what I had prepped for.
I like to live by the ‘plan plans but don’t plan results’.
    thanks James

This makes sense, I remember way back when I started writing I was just typing whatever came to mind and for the most part people really thrieved on it. RAW yes I agree, just keep typing, being yourself, writing from the heart has attracted alot of people for me and I will have to continue like that to keep people coming to my blog. I reading all my past blogs and it makes sense now. My new blog, I am trying to be more positive but at times I feel I am not speaking from the heart. So new week coming up, will get busy doing that. Of course as always, 3 minutes of your video captures my heart and attention, Thanks so much James, you are my inspirational GURU

    • Yeah sometimes it’s difficult to keep positive, but that can be used if you talk about what you are going through etc. Ha ha kind words as ever, keep em coming and I’ll keep banging it out

  4. more open and honest you are without any gimmics and if you even agreee the mistakes you’ve fone in different part of your career progression say while starting website you can pullin more traffic….as you say preparation is not so mandate….in my personal experience i read website of an author who mentioned his mistake and stressed importance of FOCUS to achieve in blogging business…I understood my mistake…it was an eye opener for me…so rather than preparation try to be simple and honest to win

Yep, being raw like a lion in the Savannah.

But it’s hard for me to find the right mix – on one side I want to write the ultimate, info-taining and stylishly edited post and on the other – I want to let it be raw and super-personal and vibrant. Yeah, I think I’m going for the golden middle here.. Every day is a day for improvement !

    • The thing I do when doing things like this is to keep it raw but just let it flow and try and slow it down a bit, then once it’s finished come back to it and add the bits you need to, do you think that would help?

brother have you being drinking too much coffee? ;)

Great video, though I have divided opinions upon the “Preparation” subject matter. I usually go by the principle “Proper preparation prevents poor performance”- This saying has many “”it depends” arguments such as as you said if you are dealing with facts preparation is necessary.

Also on the other side too much preparation might lead to not actually carrying out the project at hand as you are always waiting to perfect it.- “UNFORTUNATELY NOTHING IS PERFECT” So the solution is to START then CORRECT on the way.

On the point “People connect better when presented with raw material”- I think this is because when presented raw material, they content is most of the time error prone despite being good. This makes the readers think “Hey, this guy makes the same mistakes I do!” This creates some sort of connection as they’ve found a common ground which I call the Horizontal Connection.

On the other hand when presented with something too perfect, your readers no longer see the horizontal connection, the connection now becomes Vertical with you at the top and they at the bottom of the chain.

Sorry for the long comment brother :)

    • Really good comment man, yeah I drink a lot of coffee ha ha feel like Beavis when he is on the plane sometimes !

I completely agree about the vertical connection you mention, it really can be like that sometimes and it’s sad to see

Spontaneous and real may be the way to go but before I do my first video, I will be planning what I say and refining my points. Not that I won’t get to the point of just talking but it is the only way I will be sure that what I say makes any sense. I’ll bet you did some planning your first time too.

  8. Julius says:

I especially like the point you said: We really don’t prepare when we’re talking to our friends. I think this is how we should talk to our readers. I also agree however, that when you’re dealing with fact-oriented and highly technical issues, you have to do some planning.

Haha! “Not dealing in facts…” that cracks me up man.

Here’s a little tip you may or may not find useful: Jot down a few bullet points about what you intend to talk about.

Then post those bullet points along with the video.

This gives you a little search engine mojo, something extra for Google to grab on to when the search spider comes to crawl. Only takes a moment or two, and from my experience with screencasts, the bullet points don’t get in the way. You don’t even have to talk about them, as long as they’re relevant to your discussion.

  10. I agree with Dave above. Video is great, love seeing it, but it doesn’t do much in Google or Search. A lot of bloggers will summarize the video in writing after they are done just so you also have something to read and Google also has something to spider. Content is king! :)

    • Hey man yeah I do that on my post+video stuff but for video only posts I’m actually not that worried about it as the site usually has at least one sometimes two other posts that day
