The Army Of Mutual Benefit
You scratch my back and I’ll scratch yours, sound familiar? While that rule is probably one of the oldest rules in business, in order to succeed on the internet you need to take it to the next level. Without doubt this is one of the keys to this site doing so well so quickly.
Over at TheInfoPreneur forum we have it down to a tee, spreading each others content and really helping each other, but what if you’re not part of a forum? Your army of mutual benefit soldiers should be so tight and so helpful that you can strike into your market place with ease.
- Social
OK this is a no brainer right? You spread their content and in turn they spread yours? Doesn’t always happen that way though does it? When you get a comment do you visit that persons site? When someone re-tweets your content do you do the same for them? When they submit your content to digg or StumbleUpon or even refer to it on another site, what do you do?
Mutual benefit comes from working together to spread each others work, don’t worry about by spreading their site it could make it more popular than yours, if it’s that close between the two sites then you should be working together anyway not against each other.
- Comments
Engage in other sites comments section, get involved. This boosts their website and post value, but will also raise your profile. It’s a win win situation if you help other people out on there site. I’m always banging on about commenting and how you have to add value, but if you see a comment on their post that really hits home with you engage in it, create a discussion, even if the author doesn’t get involved. By creating discussions you really are raising your profile and adding to the opportunity of replying and even better raising your profile.
Some people see comments as a competition, the feeling of not commenting too much on their site so that they don’t appear busier than you. This is a crazy attitude, as I said if a few comments will make that much difference then you are already visiting a site that is going to be bigger than yours so work with them not against. By adding real value and being the catalyst to a comments section you actually do the site owner a favour, one which they may well return.
- Emails
Talk to each other a lot, now I get a lot of emails asking advice and help, anything from help with choosing a niche to logging into their site to see what plugin problems they are having. While this may seem like a lot of work for no reward, it couldn’t be further from the truth.
Now I know this will go against the traditional business model of helping a little to hook them, but I’m doing things my own way. I reply to everything and help everyone I can, why? Helping without asking anything in return (in a lot of cases) results in mentions on different sites and reader loyalty. Again I know this goes against good business practice, but like I said I’m going about things a different way.
If you see someone out there rocking it or someone who has a particular skill that you could use then email them and hook something up.
- Under Dog
There are a lot of top dogs in my market place and I for one love that. It shows it can be done, but I have two issues (not a rant) with top dogs in my market place. Some of the ones I talk to are constantly telling me I can’t make the money I’m aiming for just using this site and they use niche sites to make the majority of their income etc. The other thing is some people have become slightly in awe of the top flight which can hold them back.
Imagine a Lion, ferocious and strong. amazing to look at a real thing of beauty and a force of nature. The lion is your top flight in your market place, the King pin. Now imagine a dog on it’s own, a pitbull full of energy keen as hell but it’s just one dog how on earth can it share the meal with the lion all by it’s self? You’re right by working with 10 or 100 other pitbulls, you still get to each just as much as the lion, but so does everyone else.
Everyone loves an under dog, so work with each other and build your army of mutual benefit. I have done a few posts about working with you, it’s a fantastic way to really transform both parties presence.
What does everyone think?

Its funny, I’ve been wrestling with the idea of this for a little while. Let me explain quickly;
I’m not in the same niche as almost all the other people I’m helping.
This is fine, and you guys are still great, but I’ve noticed that by helping out other bloggers, self development people, etc, I’m attracting more of the same with my followers and viewers. Again that’s fine because I’m always up for talking and so on, but I’m wondering how much it’s really helping.
Example, my 3D people are going to get fed up of seeing blogging stuff all the time in my twitter, so they’re going to subscribe less/unsub/whatever. Whereas the blogger people aren’t strictly speaking going to really relate to a large part of what I’m saying on my site.
Wondering if I need to split it in two somehow, but reluctant to do so because the content of the site is more or less the way I thought it would be. Don’t want to Stop helping out, cause that benefits no one, just wondering if you had any advice.

Heather what you need to do is a combination of both but more heavily weighted to 3-D tech types, start working with people in that market etc, otherwise you will get into the grove your starting to get into now and get traffic but it’s the wrong sort of traffic for your site, see what I mean?

Yea the problem I’m seeing there is that blogs etc for 3D have less of a community thing going; usually they won’t even have ReTweet buttons or social sharing.
Suppose I could start sitting with HootSuite open while I’m browsing the pretty sites though, certainly see enough that I could share around. Thanks, I’ll give it a whirl.

Good post, my only “different” opinion than most is the following line…
“I have been cultivating and training an army of soldiers…”
Which I would have to say in all honesty doesn’t sound good to read, although as you say “for mutual benefit to all” it still it sounds like something many people make feel they take it the other way… manipulated.
Not that I am, just saying as part of the discussion
It goes back to all the “tribe nonsense” in one sense, also can also alienate some people as has happened before, old boys club kid of crap…
In, or out… etc.
I don’t feel part of an “army or soldiers” under anyone, no offence to you James, you get my drift…
But, as with anything in life it happens, it’s hugely UN-avoidable, look at the “circles” of people around us… around each of them too.
People clump people with people.
Doubt we will ever change it, so yeah, one with all good, mutual respect and such is appealing if you have to be “part” of anything.

Top point brother I have edited it now to read better hopefully. I didn’t mean it to sound like that, more of a group of people working together for mutual benefit rather than one guy at the top etc. Thanks for the tip
Twitter: robsellen
says:
Aye, that does indeed sound completely different, don’t ya think?
So early in the post could “set the tone” in any readers head and change the ways they read it, which would be a shame as they would then miss the main point really with the true meaning and intent.
Still, interesting stuff, this, I love the nuances of the English language!

Rob Sellen´s last blog ..Monetisation, it’s not a sin!
I’m of course on record for not liking tribes of anything so I see where Rob is coming from. The issue some of have with the “alisters” is that they are the ultimate “boys clubs” and use their contacts to sell hard to their followers without the followers realising that they are only seeing one very small corner of the internet. I never intended to get a following on my blog – it happened naturally becaues people liked what I was doing and because some of the people who like – linked …

Hey Lis,
Yeah you have a great following and I put that down to your passion for your readers and great content. The old boys network will hopefully become that ”old”
Twitter: robsellen
says:
Funny, because really it’s not about being in “tribes” or “groups” but more about we can learn “something” from everyone, even if we aren’t aware of it at the time.
Old boys club mentality will always be there no matter what, can still learn from them I guess, the real important one for me is human behaviour… bottom line that’s all that matters, what we learn from that covers almost everything else.
Shepherds, sheeple, whatever, it’s all human behaviour.
Just different and yet there are patterns.
Interesting stuff all this crap… lol.

Hi James,
We are stronger together, than we are alone. While I don’t think that there is anything inherently wrong with the ‘army’ or ‘tribe’ mentality and I love being able to share and network, Rob does bring up some good points. Particularly the ‘old boys club’ comment, which I do see in action. Although, I guess the same could be said for the ‘mommy bloggers’ who have a de facto club that excludes men. Being part of a club does have some peer pressure associated with it, too. What if you are kicked out of the club? What happens then to your readers, commenters, and followers – were they all an illusion?
I also think that you have to have personal standards of what you will comment on, retweet, stumble, etc. I draw the line at get-rich-quick or blogs which feel slimy and won’t comment or retweet their articles, no matter how many comments they leave on my site.
Don’t forget that your name and picture (if you are not hiding behind an alias) will be forever associated with what you have said and done on the internet. It’s just something to be aware of.

James,
Another great post with lots of useful info, thank you for sharing these ideas.
There is an abundance of cliches that go with this principle,
“Share and share alike” and “you scratch my back, I scratch yours” (already mentioned by Martin) are just two. In terms of blogging this is made easier because of the great number of bloggers who are prepared to share.

I particularly like the idea that we shouldn’t worry if the person we would help would be able to make his site more popular than ours. It’s all about working together. After all, we all share the same goal of providing good information to those who need it.

Great advice here James.
I personally think that if you have the drive (you do) and are determined (you are) to make things work then you’ll find a way to make them work.
Also, I love getting into discussions. Even if it’s just after I make the first comment. I love talking to other people and sharing their ideas and such. It’s fun, interactive, and gives me joy to help other people however I can so blogging really make it something else. And, it’s what any blogger should do.

I love doing stuff for others, even if it is an RT or Digg, if I don’t have anything to add to the topic I still share it. If someone needs help, I will help ( although its usually me looking for the help ) I never expect anything back, I don’t do it to be rewarded. But that said, you would have to draw the line somewhere before people start taking advantage because it does happen.
But when it works, it works with great affect.
