Stop Dreaming and Get to Work!
Dreams are motivation. Dreams, in most cases, are the catalyst to starting a website or a business. Paying off your mortgage, spending more time with your family or even getting your own book deal. But when do dreams turn into real life nightmares? When you are dreaming way too much;
- Talking a good talk
‘This time next year’ blah blah blah, yeah it’s great to talk about what you are going to do when you have made it, but if that’s all you do, you will never get there. I talk to my family about my plans and how it will all be different, but that is either right before I do a stack of work or just after, to reassure them it’s worth it. I’ve written before about my wife and sister who have some tremendous ideas while they are drinking coffee, but then another coffee arrives and the day is soon over.
If all you do is talk about an amazing business, when do you actually have time to create and run an amazing business? Note: You need to have VIP Access to read the rest of this post: Subscribe to email list by clicking here.
- Dreaming too much
Dreaming too much is crazy. Dreams are needed, but dreaming in excess is the same as talking a good talk, fatal. By dreaming I mean day dreaming, trawling the net, searching for the new Range Rover or looking at expensive houses or holidays. All this wasted time could be spent producing fresh content, promoting and working on the next phase of your development, all of which are productive, but take time to do. Close any browsers that are causing you to dream too much, until your work is done.
Dreaming can also come in the form of focus, or lack of it. Suddenly find yourself checking your twitter or facebook profile? Having a quick game of something or other, going to make a coffee and start reading the paper? Stop it right now, all those minutes add up to hours over the week and in one months time you could be in a great position, or the same position as everyone else.
- Fear
Sometimes people dream because they think they will never be able to make it. So why dream if they know they will never make it? Because it keeps them in a dream world that is nicer than the reality in which they think they live in. Notice the emphasis on think, fear cripples people. Fear is an adult emotion that limits what a person can do.
I spent 10 years in the military of which, probably 9 of them were spent being scared. Fear is a tool to be used, but you have to approach it from a different way. Instead of thinking, ‘I can’t do it because I don’t have enough money’ or ‘There are too many people doing it already’ try approaching it like, ‘I don’t want to work for that jackass of a boss all of my life’, or ‘ I want a bigger house’, ‘I want people all over the world to see who I really am’, ‘If I don’t take this guy out, I’m done for!’
Fear can be the fire you need to drive you forward or the shackles which constrict who you are.

The problems with dreaming is that it’s really easy. Things don’t often go wrong and when they do you can usually over come them easily.
When you talk to people about your dreams you can easily dress it up a little bit to make it sound more impressive.
But to actually walk the walk and talk the talk is a very different thing. Full of hard work and troubles along the way, but much better than any dream in the long run.
We often see ourselves as successful but the real measure of a successful person is the number of dreams that they turned into a reality.

Too much talk, too little do – this is frequently one of the biggest things I find when helping clients. Everyone know’s the problem, but no one does anything about it.
As Mao Tse-Tung said, ‘even the journey of a 1,000 miles begins with a single step’.

Gordie,
Do you find the deadlines usually solve the problem?

Hi James,
We are living in a time where dreams are closer to become real than ever before. We just have to grab it, and to do so we have to work hard toward success. As you said, fear is the most important barrier to succeed. We have to realize that it’s irrational. It’s like a bug in our minds that needs to be fixed.
Thanks James for this inspirational post.
See you buddy.

Dreams are good but dreaming too much is a bad thing. If we don’t do something to make it happen, reality just kicks us in the butt and we don’t achieve what we thought we had set out to in the first place.
If we dream and then create a plan of action and then set some time aside each day to get a bit closer to making that dream a reality, well, that dream would become a reality. Don’t make the mistake, make the dream a reality. You owe it to yourself.

I love that last statement about fear being either your fire or your shackles…its so true. The fear of staying at my current day job motivates me to go home and work on new listings for my website to try and push forward to a better life than being told what to do everyday! I am dreaming but hopefully not flittering my life away with daydreams…..

Hey Adrienne,
Absolutely right you need to use that fire in the right way, day dreams are great as long as you make sure they turn into plans
