This is a guest post from Fit Jerk, I love FJ and he is a good friend of mine who has an amazing way of putting his point across, FJ over to you;
Recently, an idea popped into my head that had some kick ass business potential. Actually, it still is pretty epic, but there’s a problem – getting it off the ground and implementing it (isn’t that always the biggest hurdle?). Anyway, after getting over the initial excitement I was all like “yeah that WOULD be cool, but I’m not sure I can pull that shit off right now…” or “This is wayy too big, its gona hafta wait”
So I wrote it down and off it went to live in my archive where other little gems reside. These are the “gems” that I will eventually put into practice at some point, but apparently I have more important and mundane stuff to do right now. Or so I thought.
Fast forward a few days and I some how found myself researching the famous English architect Sir Christopher Wren. In his lifetime, this dude was responsible for rebuilding 51 churches and designing the St Paul’s Cathedral. Forget the 51 random Churches for a second and look up the pictures of this Cathedral. The amount of planning, thought and attention to detail required to pull of a structure like this simply blew my mind. Make no mistake about it, this guy was a visionary.
Every angle of the Cathedral is simply stunning… you cannot run out of shit to see. There are so many crevices and angles and stone carvings, that you can see why it took 30 years to complete. Sir Christopher Wren was a smart man and I’m sure he knew this building would take a long time to complete… but did he just say “later”? No, this guy not ONLY went ahead and completed this enormous project in his life time, he helped rebuild 51 other churches… and here I am dealing with my own little bullshit of running an online business and a website. Really puts things into perspective doesn’t it?
My motto has always been that what one man can do, another can replicate if taught. While a man like Sir Christopher was talented, he is no better off in any other sense. He still had two arms, two legs and a brain, and had to put in the sweat. The building didn’t design itself. In fact I would consider him handicapped by today’s standards… since we now have powerful calculators, laptops, cameras etc. So if he can pull off something this majestic with “primitive” tools… what the hell is stopping you from implementing your biggest most bad ass ideas?

I’ll tell you what is… it’s YOU. Our abilities are severely under-ratted… it’s the 21st century, I’m pretty sure that if you buckle your ass down, you can create a successful business.

That is a really good point. I think we severely underestimate the potential that we ourselves have.

Sweet post! It makes me wanna go find my ideas.doc and start at least one of them. I think I might make a time line, I have to start this one by this, etc. Anyways, quite an inspiring post!

Yeah, having an ultimatum for your ideas is crucial. Without a deadline, you’ll just endlessly wave around in the wind. Also, Parkinson’s Law will own your ass!

Cathedral is gorgeous, it’s been one of my favourite pieces of architecture for a long time.
I think it’s important to pick and choose your ideas, at least from a viability point of view (ie. is it physically possible?), but then go right ahead and do it. Still getting the hang of that second part.

Yeah, out of the “gem” collection, I have to say that after further reflections, not ALL of them are “gems”. I bold out the ones that are most likely the best. Still, it’s a hefty bold list.

Perspective is all about where you are viewing things from, sit where you are and look around you…. then take the “helicopter” view of where you are at… two completely different vantage points or perspective… and what looks huge at ground level is likely to look small in the big picture… so take the big snapshot and then get on with it.

Hi FJ,
“My motto has always been that what one man can do, another can replicate if taught. ” This is very similar to one of my mottos, which is “If they can do it, then so can I”. It may take some time and effort to figure things out, but if someone has done something that I want to do, then I know that I can do it, too.
You are totally correct when you say that it’s ourselves that is stopping us from achieving our full potential. I look around and see some amazing things that people are doing and they have so much personal stuff to deal with that I don’t. What’s my excuse then? I don’t have one. I think it’s time to push pass the fear and really ramp up.
Thanks for the push.
Karen
Oh anytime. I like pushing… it’s what i do

It all begins and ends with the word you because it comes down to personal responsibility. AND, something I think about a lot is that if I think an idea is crazy or I am weird for wanting to do something I just think of all the people who’ve done amazing things, they were considered weird or strange also. What makes me any different?
Good post dude.

Yeah… honestly man, who a fuck what people think? It’s the biggest, boldest most bad-ass ideas that are actually easier to implement because no one else would dare do them. You competition is almost non-existent, and how can you argue with that?

Eric,
Inspirational post! I definitely agree that it’s usually your own laziness that prevents you from massive success. I’m pretty good at taking action, but there are a lot of “million dollar ideas” that I’ve never pursued.
What do you do to make sure you follow up on the random “gems” that pop up?

I put a realistic time line on them. Without a timeline, you’re shooting in the dark, and it will take you FOREVER to get anything done. A timeline will also help you cut out all the bullshit and streamline the process. It’s key! (also, outside help isn’t a bad choice)

That makes sense. I do capture of lot of excellent ideas, but most of them linger in “development hell.” Maybe the timeline idea will help bring more of my ideas into the mix.

This is a great proof of what we can achieve if we put our minds to it. I personally have my own goals, but I try to make it one step at a time. Doing one task per day and focusing on it, so far this has worked well for me.

Nothing to do with this blog entry, but I’m very impressed by FJ’s website. Just about to rush out, but I’ll order the book later and may also pinch some of his marketing ideas.
Cheers
