Is Your Site Running On Adrenaline?
We all get traffic spikes, influxes of readers flocking to see our latest content because of the social media work we have put in. Guest posting, comments, tweets all these can bring in a spike in traffic, but what happens to your site after this?
Does your site live day to day chasing that traffic spike or does it have enough substance in it to capitalize on these waves of readers?
- Controversial
There is no doubt that controversial subjects can bring in huge amounts of traffic, but it has to be done in the right way. Don published a post not long ago that brought him huge traffic and become an extremely popular post for him. Now I don’t completely agree with everything said over there, but it created a huge debate and debates like that bring in traffic spikes.
The key to publishing post like that though is to remember who you are, remember what you stand for and why you are writing it. Now on the flip side of this coin is Allyn, who is controversial all the time, I personally like Allyn, he’s different, he makes a massive amount of cash online, but is more than comfortable in letting the whole world know his views on everything and everyone. He stays true to who he is which is the most important thing about being controversial.
If it’s who you are and it’s what you believe in then do it, but don’t pretend just to get a quick boost.
- Lists
Lists are great ways of getting spikes in traffic, especially if you create lists of websites. Most wordpress owners will know when they get a back link (a link from one website post to your post, like a referencing link) those back links will draw in the site owner which usually results in a comment or re-tweet.Readers like lists, only if they are helpful, either a top 20 or something similar.
Careful with lists though, you need to create a post that has a list on websites to visit that you would actually want to read, contribute and visit those websites in that list, don’t go spamming everyone for the sake of creating a quick surge in traffic.
- Bones
OK so you have a couple of ideas on how to create traffic spikes, but then what? Your site needs to have some bones to eat, something people can chew on after they have read that first post. If you take my site for example, I have popular posts and recent comments on every page, it’s also fairly easy to navigate.
Another way of keeping new readers is to have a bit of personality in your writing, be personal and above all be honest. Give your readers an education as well as motivation.
So is your site surviving till the next hit or is it capitalizing on new traffic?

Hey James!
You and your readers may note that I stayed true to my position in the comments of my post about David Risley (you can link to the post in question via my commentluv link below – GO COMMENTLUV!)
I didn’t attack the guy, I just wrote a post about my opinion.
ALL bloggers are after the same thing – they want people to read their blog – otherwise why bother?
I’ve reread my post a dozen times and I still come to the same conclusion – it’s not sensationalist. It was not written for the sake of controversy. It was actually a natural follow up to the post from the previous day where I complimented David Risley and promoted the very same webinar that ultimately I was disappointed in…
I will ALWAYS stick to my principles. My statements will be based on facts. And when I state an opinion, it will be SUPPORTED by facts.
I personally know there is a readership for this type of writing because they show up and comment on every one of my posts!
Thanks for the opportunity to me to re-state my position.

hey man, yeah you totally stuck to your guns and I respect that. It was a post that made a good example of creating a debate, because you had a bunch of people agreeing and disagreeing, it was great to see

Yah – a debate ensued which is the greatest compliment a blogger can get!
It means that a VARIETY of people are following and reading your posts and care enough about the platform to stop what they are doing and write a comment.
I have no problem with dissenting viewpoints on an issue so long as people base their position on facts!
Cheers!

I guess David was a little concerned about giving a lot away in his webinar.
I think he should listen to Pat Flynn.

Brilliant time for this post James, I’ve been asking myself how I can increase my traffic and keep it over the last few days and I think this has partially answered my question.
Planning a slightly new/different direction for part of my blog (*cough*Wednesdays*cough*) that I’m really excited about; ironing out the kinks and going to post my plan on Saturday – this ties in really nicely with that and filled in a gap I had in my plans.
Thanks

Another great article James, I had to read it again because I went over to Don’s post and ALL the comments after mine.
Personally, I think the list posts are working now, but more creativity is going to be needed in the future to remain on top of the game.

Allyn loves me because I link to anchor keywords, instead of his name. He recently did a post on the subject.

It’s all about the search engines, and keywords. I just thought I would mention it. It makes a ton of sense, because people will do more searches for keywords than they will for names. Just trying to be educational.

Writing posts that cause a good traffic boost aren’t bad as long as you stick to your word and are honest about what you talk about. Doesn’t mean everything will go smoothly but you won’t be caught in a lie.
If it’s the truth and it brings together a group of people all having an opinion about something that they feel they absolutely must share, great. Be real and keep going and you’ll always win by helping others do just that.

I try to make my posts are valuable as they can be and this involves a lot of sitting still to come out with something unique and of substance.
I used a list 2 posts a go and it think it was very concise.
Meanwhile, i really do not know what is the issue with CommentLuv and my blog lately
