I’m a Dumb ass – But I’m doing it
I left school at 16 years old, with no qualifications at all, enlisted into the military the very day I left my high school mainly out of necessity, it was that or jail. I cooked for myself from about the age of 8 years old, I don’t have any friends in high places, or a background in marketing, I have an IQ of 94 (equivalent of a 14 year old) and severe dyslexia. I’m a dumb ass, but this website, is less than a month old and is growing in popularity. Testament to the fact you don’t need a $50,000 education to make it online.
- Necessity
Man kind is born out of necessity, we needed to treat the ill – we built hospitals, sell coffee beans – cargo ships, tell the world what were thinking – Internet. For me it was about the need to be someone. Somebody who people turn to when they need help or need motivation. A person who’s readers hold in high regard and say good things when telling their friends about my website. Growing up with no help at all, it’s that necessity that drives me to help others.
- Route taken
Your route doesn’t determine your destination, but it can influence how you travel. For instance I didn’t fit in at school but couldn’t understand why, so I hid away from the crowds, kept my opinions to myself and didn’t tread on any toes. I am sure that this is the reason I’m compelled to help people and make something of myself, and you know what… I’m doing it every single day. Look around the site and read the comments, People are talking about something I have created!
- Family
When you’re responsible for another human life it changes you in a way you can never plan for. I grew up without a family and I never ever want my family to have to fend for themselves. Providing everything they ever want (Which, credit to them is nothing) and need, and letting them know dreams can come true. All the time my family say to me, How many hits you had today? What are people saying? How does that work? How do people know your name? etc etc My family talk to me like I’m the most famous person in the world, and that is the best feeling in the world!
- Helping hand
Being able to to be there when someone says ‘Look, I don’t know where I’m going wrong’ Is what this site was built for. I believe that no one has to suffer in silence, as long as they’re prepared to listen and help themselves. I’m not a religious person at all,.. well that’s not exactly true I think I have a guardian angel looking after me, but that’s as far as it goes, and this site gives me that guardian angel status.
Again, if your like me, don’t know where to go or what to do, but have a desire to do something, don’t be put off by the lack of knowledge or education, just go for it!

awesome post man.
You inspire me to not let the others’ low expectations box me in. Expectations based on IQ, schooling, background, financial status, career etc…
Keep it up. I look forward to reading more.

Thanks Zek, I figure there are millions of people like us, we’re just as capable as the educated ones are if not more so! Good on you Zek
Great post! Very inspiring! It shows that persistance pays off! Also, it’s important to listen to that still, small voice inside yourself telling you to never give up!

Wow, I am blown away. But how can we teach others to believe in themselves? If you have changed one persons life you are successful. You are successful.
Really a great and compelling story here.
You are a true inspiration either for all us… education or no education..
I like the fact that you don’t try to blame anyone, but take things in your own hands and try to do something with what you have.. Awesome..
I’ll give your article a retweet..
Cheers.. your friend.. Are

This was an awesome post!!! Such inspiration, even to me who was considered “smart” in school. Starting this task of blogging brought on such a fear within me. I believe it was because I was it was outside of my comfort zone. I decided to feel the fear and do it anyway!!!
Well, I said it over on ProBlogger and I’ll say it here too – you are clearly not at Dumb Ass!
And I really like your “If it’s to be, it’s up to me” attitude!
Good Luck!
Sandra
Inspirational my friend.
This post is compelling, honest, and inspirational. It’s obvious that not only do you totally believe in what you do and in yourself – but you also have an extremely positive outlook and a great ability to express your thoughts – what else do you need to succeed?!
Everything that has happened to you has made you who you are, and you are definitely a winner! Incidentally, many of the world’s most successful entrepreneurs are dyslexic…
Of course money and education can help people hugely, but they can also box people in and lead to them living unfulfilled lives following their heads rather than their hearts. I know which path I prefer!!

I have to say: you’ve got style. I very much like this post for its candidness. Very few people open up to the world like this, so when I see someone who does, I feel obligated to give kudos.
I teach developmental English, and some of the very best moments I’ve had as a teacher have come from students who were always told they were dumbasses. They have always been the most consistently respectful and conscientious students, and I’ve never had a disciplinary problem out of a single one. Especially the non-traditional students have returned to school after a lengthy break in the workforce. They’re my bread and butter.
I wish you only the best with your blog. And you’re certainly not a dumbass.

Hey man!
I like where you’re coming from here. I just started my first ever blog about 2 weeks ago too. I’ve got lots of fear and uncertainty but I;m encouraged by the unexpected relationships and assistance I’ve gotten from folkd who are maybe just a few posts aheaad of me in this wild world of trying to make a living online…
I’m not a comment spammer but my most recent post addresses this same sentiment and I think it might resonate positively with your readers:

It always feels like such a big risk to put your thoughts and ideas out where everyone can see them. More than likely, everyone else is more attracted to our struggles than a false portrayal of confidence. I know I feel more of a connection with someone who has faced similar insecurities and struggles.
By being open and honest you establish a rapport with others.
In the end all we can do is be true to ourselves and believe in our voice. I am glad you took the risk and shared your voice! Keep it up!

I have told you before the reason I like you is you are down to earth, honest, and talk common sense. That doesn’t mean you are a dumb ass. It means you are human and honest. You are the type of person that is going to shift the world. One of my resolutions for 2010 is to meet influencers. You are on my top 10 list. I plan on meeting you and having an honest conversation. You have been blogging a short time, and yet you have given a lot of people something to think about. You give strength and confidence. The key to your blog is you write what people are already thinking and feeling and are too shy to put in words. You are courageous. Maybe it is your past in the military that gives you that courage or it is who you are, your character. I know one thing for sure: Having troubles as a young person can give you GREAT strengths as an adult. I don’t know what your goals are, but I sure hope you achieve every one of them.

Dude, you’re not a dumbass!! Serious… You’re not! Never let an issue become your identity. I see you completely making that true for your life. What I mean by that is, your “issue” is not your identity–that’s why you’ve broken through. You made bad decisions in the past, but look how it’s being redeemed. You have made a conscious decision to break something in your life, to make a change and shift. I’m proud of you bro, and honestly, when I first met you on Twitter, I thought you were a college graduate, master’s degree something!!!

I totally agree with you on “Just go for it.”
I do have to disagree on the 94IQ which is approaching moron. Someone may have told you that or tried to get you to believe that but no one with an IQ of 94 can communicate like you do. You are only as alive as you can communicate and you are very alive.
Your gift is that you invite others to communicate and they want to communicate back with you and through blogging. You are making 100′s and 1000′s of others more alive by what you are doing. It is a wonderful gift and I thank you for sharing it with me.
