If You Think You’re The Best, You Should Consider Quitting Now – Guest Post
My name is Eric Heavilin from BluePop13.com and this is my 3rd Guest Post, 2nd on here. For those of you who know me and my work you’ll truly find this a joy. For those new to me and my work I strongly encourage you to read this and see what you can take away from it as I feel it makes a great point that most of us are over looking each day which is just a shame.
No one is the best. Some people may call themselves pros or gurus or something of that nature because they have earned that right, hopefully. You really have to go out there and give it all you’ve got while still allowing yourself to learn whatever you can in order to become even better. Yep, you’re never the best there is because there is truly no best. There’s always better and that’s what makes the world so wonderful.
Start Doing
If you’ve read any of my writings or have been following me at all and really learned anything about me you’ll know that I’m a huge fan of Larry Winget. He’s known as the Pitbull Of Personal Development and there’s a reason why. He believes that when you get uncomfortable enough with where you are in life, you’ll do whatever it takes to get yourself any place better. This is true and too many of us miss this point.
We’re often told that we’re doing a great job, and maybe we are. But there’s always something we can surely do better. Sticking with it is part of the problem but more than that it’s actually doing anything at all. I will quickly also let be known that I love personal quotes. Oh I love ‘em! Stuff like: If you keep doing what you’ve always done, you’ll always get what you’ve always got. I love that one because it makes perfect sense in so many of our lives. Do something different and get uncomfortable enough with where you’re at in order to get some place better.
Keep Doing
As I mentioned previously you have to stick with it for it to benefit you at all. I have always had a bad habit of starting something and not finishing it. I love blogging and I don’t think I’ll ever quit doing this. It’s wonderful and when you build relationships with people (even online) you really get a warm feeling inside yourself and it does some things to you.
The big thing here is even if you mess up, and you will, maybe make the wrong decision about something in your life or do something too late or two early, whatever it is, keep going. Don’t let it get you down and just keep going. If you stop, you’re just back to square one and hopefully you at least learned something from square one. If not, you’re only going to repeat it. Please, just keep going.
Actually Get Something Done
You need to accomplish things. Starting is where it’s at for most people. It really is. A great example of this is excuses people use every day of their lives about why they just “can’t”. Sorry, I don’t buy that. It may be difficult and maybe you’re not in the right condition for something in particular but most of the time people just give excuses. So start doing something and then seriously keep doing that something but then actually look at what you’re doing and make sure something is actually getting done.
Take blogging for instance. You started a blog about a topic you really love talking about; let’s use money for this example. No not making money from blogging, just money. Talk about ways to earn money and maybe how to invest it for the future. Talk about your own personal situation and give not good examples but spectacular examples. Seriously, do some of this stuff and actually get something out of this. It’s worth it. Take comments and leave comments and respond to comments and keep getting something done. You will have taught so much and you will also be learning a lot too!
Finished… Never!
Doing all three of these things are so important to making anything work in life. In fact, by doing all three of these and maybe even adding in what James talked about in his article you CAN sprint a marathon when he said, “By all means set yourself targets and hit them but as soon as your getting anyway near them, set new ones and keep pushing your self forward.”, you’ll come out on top.
If you do all of this and actually end up with people calling you “the best” or something like that, that’s a place you’ve earned because of your hard work and your efforts and your determination. You just shouldn’t call yourself that if no one really sees you that way. Let other people put you in that spot that you’ve worked hard for and continue to work at and don’t just label yourself as such.

Have you started doing something, anything, and are you still doing it or anything else, and are you really getting something done? From what you’ve done, what are other people saying about that?

To me this point is the key. You have to keep going. If you don’t you get into an endless loop of repeated failure.

Hi Eric,
It’s true to say, that when you are number 1 (or at least think you are) then there is only one place you can go.
I guess there’s some strong argument that the best place is to be number 2 as you’re trying to be number 1 and you’re giving it your best shot.
Answering your readers questions is a great way for you to add value to your readers and sharpen your skills.
Thanks for sharing your post!

Matt,
Never thought of it that way and you make a good point.
Being number one can be great but when you’re number two, you can actually go up higher and strive to get to the top and learn ways of doing so as you go about it.
Awesome, man!
Thanks!

Very interesting article, Eric
I think that it’s important to not get stuck in a rut or in your comfort zone. Only by stretching ourselves and seizing new opportunities can we grow. As we grow, we are more able to give back to others what we have learned. Without the failures, there would also be no growth.
While I agree that many people fail at something, just before they are able to see the rewards, I also think about diminishing returns and not beating your head against the wall when something isn’t working. There’s a time to be persistent, but there is also a time to accept failure and move on. It’s knowing the difference that’s a real struggle for many people (me included).
Thanks,
Karen

Karen,
You said it, it’s knowing the difference between understanding when you should learn to move on or keep at whatever it is you’re doing. If we don’t fail once in a while and learn the lessons of life we’re basically doomed from the start.
Great stuff here…
Thanks!

Eric,
SICK POST!!!
This has always been a core value of mine, to “Never Arrive.” In fact, I forgot about it though it’s been in the core of who I am. I just recently added it to the core values of my blog. I have always had it in me to remain a student at anything I put my hand to, because the moment I decide, “I have arrived.” is the moment I step into mediocrity and complacency.
Awesome post brother.
keep on keepin on!

We’re always learning, every day of our lives and that’s what makes life so great. That doesn’t mean, however, that when we reach a point we should just quit doing. That’s the true beauty of it all is to keep on experiencing what life has to offer.
Keep it up!

Agree with you totally Eric!
The way I see it is getting to there never happens. Or shouldn’t, because ‘there’ is a static thing to represent a fluid concept… with normal human nature, the minute you Are there, the there you were aiming for has changed as you’ve improved.
If that made any sort of sense. Basically where you’re aiming changes all the time (sometimes without you noticing) but your goals are points you can fix in your mind to aim to. Sharing with your readers, doing what it takes no matter how many times you fail… it’s important.
Thanks for sharing that with us.

Exactly Heather,
Things are always changing so you never actually “get there” but staying with it because you’re always getting somewhere is what’s important and sharing that experience is great.
Thanks!

Ralph,
Yes that is the key to a lot of it and to basically anything worth while. If it’s decent at all you should keep at it no matter what. Learn from your mistakes and maybe set yourself to a different course but always keep going and never just stop.
Not aiming religiously here but as I believe, even in Heaven you’re improving and learning to be the best you can be. Why stop when you’re here on Earth if your after life even allows it?
That’s just my belief and in no way am I aiming people to believe in that unless they so choose to.
Thanks, Ralph!

And what happens when people lose interest with what you are writing? What if people don’t want to hear about your story of the broken heart or how some of use can’t let go? People have pointed out and made comments to me that I am “CRAZY’ lets use that word for allowing this what I call a tragedy happen to me. Although I have written a book about it, and working on the 2nd edition, I am still continuing, so that should count for something. But why don’t I feel better? Blue, You are a great writer keep inspiring.

Winnie,
You have gone through something so tragic that it’s deep within you in a way that you saw writing a book was great help to you and to others.
People may call you crazy but that doesn’t mean you are. You know what you went through and you know how you’re feeling or felt. They may not read your book over and over but those who do are the ones you’re teaching and helping so look at them as inspiration to keep your head held high and keep on going.
I have not read your book yet but maybe finding out exactly what it is people want to know about what you’ve had to say on your subject will do a great deal of good.
What do you think? Hope this helps. Of course I’ll keep writing as it only improves over time because of all of you who read and leave your comments!

The “best” is just the best for now, and is always replaceable. Bill Gates is the richest man in the world (but not forever), records are set and made to be broken. In blogging what would measure best anyway (# of site traffic, subscribers, best written articles?)
I am good at my day job, I don’t consider myself the best but I do always “try my best” and that’s the best I can do.
At blogging, I don’t even know if I am good, sucky, great, I just blog. I don’t care if I am best, worst, hated, loved as long as some people are interested and like what I write, then I’m good.

Dragon Blogger,
That’s what it’s really all about is doing the best you can and continuing to set new and higher goals for yourself to become better in everything you do. There is no best but there IS a best you can do… Until you’re better.

Thank you for this insightful motivational post. You are right about gurus and experts earning the right to call themselves that. I’m a huge fan of Lorelle on WordPress. She is a WordPress expert and has earned that right to be called expert.
There are numerous bloggers now a days thinking they are the best, proclaiming to know all there is to know about blogging, because of their extended research when truth is they are just learning. Some of what they say is true, but some of it down right makes no sense at all.
If you think you are the best & no it all then that leaves no room for error or for learning.

You got it. There’s always room to learn more and if you think you’re the best there is, great, if there’s proof behind you.
There should always be room for improvement so being the best is just being better for a short period of time.

Fortunately for me, I know that once you stop learning you are dead in the water. Self proclaimed experts are just that, self proclaimed. I never claimed to be an expert in anything.
There are some that have been at this for a long time and still don’t know what they are doing, some that have only been doing it for a short while and have learned more because they are faster learners.
To me, there can be things to learn from almost every blog I read (almost…)

Another thing worth considering is that when you think you’re the best and nothing is a challenge to you anymore, you lose the hunger.
You need to be challenged, be uncomfortable, be unsure, take chances and know that there will always be someone who has more talent or skill than you. Be the best that YOU can be, achieve YOUR goals, take inspiration from others that have gone before but walk your own path and don’t try to be them.
That said I am the best massage giver in my house. Shame I can’t quit that though

Ian,
You hit the nail on the head here.
Always look for better and make sure to get uncomfortable every once in a while so you can keep on improving. There IS always going to be someone out there who DOES know more than you and that’s a good thing as it means you are not finished learning and learning is the ticket home.
I’m not so great at delivering messages in my apartment with my room mates and girlfriend. Any suggestions for getting across that I’d like the door locked at all times? lol

You make some good points that people should sit and think a little about. I know I always question what I do as if not certain but wanting to be certain of what I am doing and if it is good enough. My biggest problem is my uncertainty about things I do. My life has been run on wanting to be the best me I can be at all times and if I am not than I feel something is missing so I strive to keep learning so I can always’ be the best me I can be and there is nothing wrong with improvement in your life but not to the extent that your striving to please everyone but not pleasing yourself. Life is a never ending learning experience and there is so much to learn that I feel wasting time doing things you shouldn’t is only wasting time you could be doing something more productive. So at the end of the day if you wrote what you accomplished that day would it be a blank page or a great accomplishment that make you proud of yourself. Point to ponder.

Well as I say about everything you write; I like it, but even more then that. I do believe you and I had a very in depth conversation about there never being a best lol. You are right and yes I have started something and I know you have seen it but not just all of it yet and yes I am still working on it because it means the world to me. It also means a better future for us and our baby girl.
