How To Present Yourself Properly
I see a lot of websites that have great content but no real interaction from the readers or business with amazing products but no real sales to speak of. It’s not because their content sucks or their product is rubbish, it’s largely down to how they present themselves or their business. A lot of the time you only get a few seconds to make an impression with people, so make sure the way you are viewed by people is favourable.
- Confident
Confidence is everything, imagine a military patrol that gets cut off from their support and is pinned down by heavy fire. No communications, running out of ammo and the enemy is moving in. Would you want a fumbling quiet little officer who had no idea what to do, or a confident officer who still didn’t have a plan, but was willing to do something? I know which I would prefer.
Being confident and arrogant is a fine line, so be yourself, but believe in who you are and what you stand for, others will gravitate towards you.
- Presence
Presence can sometimes be confused with confidence, but presence to me is the ability to walk into a room and look like you belong. As a Physical Training Instructor I used be able to walk up to a platoon of soldiers and instantly command respect, not because they had to do what I said, but because I had presence. Leading by example and talking straight without arrogance is the key to it all.
- Attitude
I have a simple approach to this site, work as hard as I can to give the best value I can. I have the same attitude in my conventional life (as in not my elife) I treat people how I expect to be treated and I put everything into what I do. If you’re a pessimistic person, acknowledge the fact and be aware of that when you update your website or make new business plans. Equally if you are over eager (like me) then remember not to over stretch yourself, whatever your attitude to life is, be yourself.
- Language
I openly admit that I’m a Dumb Ass and no literal genius. I have no qualifications and write exactly the way I talk. For instance, if I ever talk to any of you via twitter or emails, or even on the comments then you would have heard me say ‘brother’ and ‘dude’ etc. To me I don’t think there is anything wrong with this, as it adds personality to the site, it makes the words come alive and make sense, plus this is me. I don’t use long intelligent words, I never earn heard procrastinate, before I started this site and still don’t fully understand what it means.
I’m a pasionate guy, one of those guys who always says to his mates and family that they can do it, what ever their plan is, they can absolutely do it. Write in the same way you talk to people everyday to add that little bit unique personal quality to your site.
So what does everyone think?

Hi James,
) It links in with being unique and I believe it is what makes your site site come alive.
Writing in the same way that you speak is probably one of the most helpful pieces of advice you could give a new blogger (or infopreneur
In fact, being able to write in your own voice is one of the things I love most about blogging. My sister put a document together for us about our first project. It was in perfect English and it wasn’t until I read it that I realised just how much of my person has been absorbed into the site. It scared me a little

Hey Eleanor,
Thanks for the compliment. I’m not a professor so I don’t pretend to speak like one. I write exactly how I speak and so far people seem to like it.

Agreed, working very well
I meant to add, I’m not surprised that you don’t really understand the word procrastinate. It’s totally the opposite of how you approach life. Makes sense therefore that it would be foreign to you

Some great tips here James.
I would add that you should speak from the heart. We’re fitted with pretty good BS detectors these days so it’s no surprise that we tend to migrate toward honest and open people, who speak from the heart.
I think that’s why you’ve done so well so far James. You speak from the heart and people recognise that

Actually, I disagree with the idea that we should write as we speak. I think that we should write as a favorite teacher or professor would teach. It’s not really conversational. The really good ones find a way to be entertaining. Since there is no immediate feedback from your audience, it’s really more of a monologue. So don’t just speak, but get up on your soapbox and really entertain us. I have submitted a guest post to Darren Rowse on this very topic. I just hope he decides to use it.

I think it’s depend Ray on the topic you’re writing about. I wouldn’t write for my site from a position of being on a soapbox – it just wouldn’t work. However if you’re posting to make a point, for example maybe a political point, they sure the soapbox is great.

I forgot…your in the UK and perhaps the soapbox thing brings up pictures of Hyde Park (have I got the reference right?). Maybe I should have said get up to your blackboard or stage, but the point is…entertain your audience. What do you think?
Twitter: benlumley6
says:
Yeah you should always entertain your readers.
I prefer the term readers to audience as it make blogging feel less like a performance

Readers/Visitors all the same to me, as long as I’m honest and believe what I’m writing that’s enough for me, quick think of something funny…….. erm ……. erm…….. an Irish guy and a Spanish guy…. No wait an Irish guy and a French guy, no wait that’s not right either…. Hold on I’ll be back with it in a minute
Twitter: theinfopreneur
says:
Yeah absolutely entertain or die brother, but for me I do that by talking and writing in the same way. I just couldn’t pull of the favourite teacher/professor type a) Because I never had one! and b) because I don’t have the education
Twitter: theblog_log
says:
Okay…readers if you like. The point I’m making is that you must engage your readers or audience. You want to capture their attention. It really is a question of entertainment. To get your message across, no matter what kind it is, instructional, or humorous, unless you find a way to grab and keep their attention you’re wasting your time and theirs.

HI Ray,
I agree be entertaining, but for me that’s about keeping it real brother. I do what I do the way I do it and it’s how I have got here now, right or wrong I think it depends on who you are. If you are that professor type then be it all day long, but I could never pull it off, I don’t have the brains, never mind the education lol
Twitter: theblog_log
says:
James, it’s not the professor thing. That’s not my point. If it helps, consider a good stand up comic. The point is…get their attention and keep. Otherwise your pearls of wisdom will drop from your mouth and roll around on the floor where somebody will step on them and crush them…and then where will you be?
Ray
p.s. Did my attempt at humor grab and keep your attention?

Wow, well, I pretty much read everything on this page and here’s my take on things.
If you write to your audience and you write the way you would talk with them it’s obviously more personal and lets them know you on a more personal level. I like it and I’m always loving what I’m finding on here. Though not even does like it and sometimes you may want to target things in a different way.
Ultimately it’s whatever works for your blog and I must say, what you’re doing is working for your blog, James!

Honestly don’t worry about going overboard a bit. On my blog I write a lot of content in one article. I have things to say and I want to say them. Some are more than others.
In comments I do the same. Just be you and be proud to be someone involved in such a great community of people who are helping one another out.
I’m proud of who I am and encourage the exact same thing for everyone including you.

To bounce off Eleanor, you probably don’t know what a lot of words mean because they’re negative words in no need of being in your vocabulary. Because you do not resemble them… why know them?
I’m just teasing. Plus that was a tad cheesy.

Remembering my drill sergeant from basic training, I think I understand how you might capture attention in a room. It comes across verbally too. Obviously this matches your image of yourself. I have not chosen this image of myself (in fact, I have long believed that I am not capable of projecting a powerful image) yet but now I believe that I can be whatever I choose and it is not an impossibility for me to project power and confidence. Not that it is easy to change, but I no longer consider it impossible.

Eleanor said something above about ‘writing in the same way you speak’ – but alas, I fail at this. My blog is always in danger of being far too wordy. I guess there’s a danger when you’re writing for not just a business audience, but a technically-minded business audience, to let the odd buzzword slip in.
Also, I’m a bit old-school in that I like language and the construction of sentences. Maybe I’m over elaborate and use too many big words.
My bad.
But, point taken

It’s not a bad thing at all, there is no right or wrong and nothing to say I’m the guy to listen to on this. I just find for me (having no qualifications at all) it’s easier to write as I talk and it is working massively for me.
Don’t change you brother
I do think language is important to a degree. You certainly shouldn’t change the way you speak, but we should all do our best to communicate effectively. With that said, I see no problems in your writing. If I don’t understand something you’re written I’ll ask.
