How To Change Your CommentLuv Link

This is a quick how to, type post on how to change the links you leave when using CommentLuv, now this has various advantages but first let’s just address what commentluv is for those who haven’t used it yet. Commentluv is probably the most important website plugin in use today. It allows your visitors who comment on your site to leave a link back to their latest post or article, very clean and encourages more comments on your site, see screen grab below;

So now you know what CommentLuv is, now the important bit, why change your link you leave behind? There are various reasons and situations I do this, I talk about this in the 20/7 rule coming out soon, but the essentials are;

  • Guest Posts

When I guest post on a site or a site has done a case study of this site and they use the commentluv plugin I will comment just as often as I do on this site to maximise my exposure, now you could use the same commentluv link on every post, but if you reply say 20+ times on that post you are limiting your post title advertising by only leaving one link instead of mixing it up.

  • Net

By mixing your links up you are casting a wider net, some people won’t be interested in the title of some of your posts it’s just a simple fact, so if you change your links round you will have a better chance of actually appealing to more people. The other thing about using different links in the same place or different places around the internet is you can heavily promote a post or article even if it’s not your latest., for example if you are running a post in which you hope to get more sign ups etc then choosing the different link will allow you to keep promoting that one post whilst updating your site with fresh content.

  • How

OK first things first register with commentluv, it’s free and gives you a lot of options including help when you get bad ju juj warning, more on this to come. OK so once you have registered go to your site or another site that has commentluv plugin enabled and click the tick box to show your commentluv link to be displayed, see below;

This is the single biggest mistake of people not leaving a commentluv link behind, sometimes it is already ticked and when the comment is submitted the link doesn’t appear, to avoid this un-tick it then tick it again before submitting your comment. Now if this doesn’t work the chances are the site you’re visiting hasn’t got commentluv configured properly.

Once the commentluv box is ticked, it should show your last post, again register with commentluv to actually speed the process up, more on this below. With the box ticked you will see the last post appear, now to change that link, click the little down arrow (which can easily be missed) to display more options and it will look like the screen grab below;

All you have to do now is choose the feed you want to use out of the last ten options, which for this site is roughly the last 4 or 5 days worth of content, which is seriously handy. Just click which link you want to appear and it will then look like this;

So there you have it, really easy and a powerful tool to drive traffic to your site by using different links. The cache notice at the bottom of the ten link options shows when it will be refreshed, registering speeds up this refresh which is basically a method used by CommentLuv to ease the pressure on their servers.

    Damn.

    I just canked my post on CommentLuv an hour ago because I couldn’t get the effen screenshots to line up.

    Replaced it with a great post of course, but this is freaky.

    And yes, this should be helpful for those who haven’t copped to it. I’ve personally been diligent about promoting guest authors via CommentLuv myself.

    Watch for my article on Saturday (Carlos Velez coming on Friday), and I’ll go ahead and spill the beans on the rest of it.

  2. Kinda helpful. Helpful in the way it reminded me to get off my bum and actually register there. I’ve been a bit frustrated at seeing not-the-latest post appearing in the commentluv box!

    yet another great tip James, I have been wondering about this… sometimes it seems that a new post takes a while to show up, but it is also great to have the way to give some older posts some extra LUV.

  4. CommentLuv is a great plugin and I like your pointers on how to maximize it’s potential. One of the best things I did on my Blogger blog was to install the Intense Debate commenting system with the CommentLuv plugin. It’s good to know that it’s not just for WordPress.

    James,
    Thank you so much for this information. I wondered why sometimes I didn’t get a link but never noticed the checkbox. And I never knew I could mix up the links. What can I say.

    Oh right, I didN’t find that little arrow back in the days ;)

    But honestly James, I’ve switched to Disqus, as it is more community friendly and more connected. It doesn’t come with that post link (yet), but I prefer the overall system. You should consider it.

    • Hey Man yeah I have but I don’t get on with it because of the commentluv thing, but the major one for me is when I’m trying to comment on sites that have disqus on my phone it doesn’t work even with full HSDPA signal. It’s a good system just flawed really

    • Sire says:

      Mars, I know a lot of people are turning to Disqus but I also know that many don’t like commenting on those sites, myself included. The biggest drawback being that you have to log in to comment. Sorry, too much of a hassle.

    One thing to remember is that you can also get double the exposure using commentluv. I did a post about this somewhere but I can’t be bothered to look it up. It’s pretty easy to do though and is great if you want to link to two blogs at once. Once you’ve written your comment and before clicking submit, change your website url. That way you will have a two different domains instead of one.

    James,

    I haven’t done too much with CommentLuv yet but will not look more closely at thing swhen I publish a comment on a site that has it. I’ve noticed sometimes it won’t display my latest post but I’ve found that after a few days it show up just fine.

    Thanks for the awesome post brother! :)

    I know this trick but really haven’t utilized it that much. You’re right, maybe I would need to start mixing it up and maximizing the benefits of my comments more.

    I’ve had Comment Luv on my old blog for quite a while and did not know this was possible (but always wished it were). It’ll be nice to promote a better post over a current one that may just be news related or not as important.
    I need to get this up on the new blog yet. Thanks.

    Thank you James!! I was looking around for that, I might have another question if you don’t mind? Is it possible to add our commentluv, on blogs we’ve already commented but which then didn’t have commentluv?

    Thanks James!

      I’d say your best bet is to get back out and start getting new link love.
