Get Your Focus

Time and time again I here people saying I’m just about to release a new website, or start a new business idea. Hold on a minute, what happened to the last one? To which they reply ‘Yeah yeah, I’ve still got it, but this one is going to be massive’

Get a grip, I can see the reason for jumping ship sometimes, but seriously if you do it all the time you’re never ever going to make it. If you split your attention, it’s easy to trip.

  • Right idea

When you first thought of your idea, it was genius. This was the one that was going to transform your life. So what happened? If it was a good idea back then, it’s still a good idea now. Just because its taking a little longer than normal, doesn’t mean it won’t become successful. Fair enough the world changes and you have to change with it, but don’t ditch at the first sign of trouble.

  • Knock backs

Negative comments is the single biggest killer to a one person website, why ? In How to Deal with Negative Comments, I talk about dealing with bad press. I turned one negative comment into a post that went straight to the top of my most popular posts. People will criticise you, and slate your site, of course they will. This site gets over 40,000 hits a month (Look at me talking like its been established for years!) and sure I get some people saying this and that but so what, that’s one or two people out of thousands and thousands who keep coming back . Forget those haters, and if you want to look for inspiration here, just look at your favourite celebrity and see how they brush the flack off them and keep going.

  • Spikes

You will get traffic peaks and troughs, I get them. The key is not to live day to day with your traffic but just let it take care of its self. Sure have goals, I do, and I’m 100% focused on making them a reality, but a good buddy of mine panics  like hell when his traffic is less than yesterday, panics to the point of talking about jacking it all in. Look at the traffic stats for Google.co.uk, Click 3 month stats and it will show you that a site that ranks 20 in the whole world has massive traffic shifts, Concentrate on the spikes and what made them, not the slow days. Slow traffic days can be out of your control. Major holidays like Thanks Giving can affect traffic, nothing to do with you or your site.

  • Rumbles

Remember when you learnt how to ride a bike? You struggle to keep you feet on the peddles and the front wheel is all over the place. If you could do it again, you would keep peddling to avoid that wheel wobble. If you start getting the odd rumble in your tummy that says I’m not going to make it, peddle faster and remember why you got on the bike in the first place….. To go places!

  1. Thankyou for this timely post.
In these days of information overload, it is easy to lose direction. It is too easy to have a brilliant idea, lock yourself away for a few days furiously writing, then emerge triumphant with a sparkling new blog only to find the world is not queued up waiting to get a look.
Worse, when you seek out forums and other blogs to do some promotion you find the rest of the world aready has a blog on the subject, and all the traffic you were hoping for.
This is the time to press on. Yes you may have similar content to many other blogs, but yours is different, it has your unique slant on the topic.
So head on out into the world, press boldly on and proudly tell anyone who will listen about your achievement. Oh and keep writing great content, that way you can keep on telling people about your new posts.

I seem to be getting hung up om details now.

For example, I just noticed that my wordpress url is http://donpower.me but apparently my google analytics and feedburner and url I use in comments is http://www.donpower.me

Now I’m panicking that things are not setup right (James – I’m going to take you up on your offer to help newbies like me and put all this together in an Email with screenshots, etc. early in the New Year and see if you can’t help steer me straight).

I’m also getting a bit panicky that I must not have my blog listed in all the places that it should be and how many important tips and tricks amd I letting slip by my Inbox today…

But then, I got several threaded comments from Darren Rowse on my blog yesterday – so the ZEN, believe TheINfoPreneur, part of me says:

“Okay – maybe I shouldn;t be sweating the details. It looks as if I’m on the right track generally – I’m getting lots of positive feedback and encouragement…

And then panicky DOn kicks in again and reminds my rational brain that I have no idea if I’ve even set up Google Analytics correctly and I have NO idea how many visitors to my site I’m even getting!!

Damn, I had a handle on this a while back and now I’m all at sea again…

James – does any of this sound familiar? Can you throw me a life preserver? Maybe I need to review my own post about the drowning man????

I’m definitely overthinking it James (hahah!).

I’m glad I studied logic in University (the hardest brain work I’ve EVER done. Officer Training in Military College ranks 2nd…blogging ranks third – and some days, first!).

I know what it means to be completely consumed with a ‘meme’ (I’m pretty sure meme means something different in the blogging world than in the philosophy world but since I have my fingers in both pies I can see the link!).

I’ve seen the blog Zen habits and to be honest it seems like an oxymoron to me – blogging and ZEN…but then maybe it’s just that I don’t fully understand either…or both (sorry couldn’t resist a little Quai Chan Kane moment there).

Years ago, I did a few months of Tai Chi and I swore I would do it for the rest of my life (Ididn’t). I had a flow in everything I did. I could see that yes, I was like a cork bobbing in the strean but I also realized that by letting go I had the power of ME + the stream whereas by not letting go I had the power of ME – the stream.

The stream is emotionless – it knows where it’s going, with or without the cork bobbing on its surface…

So from ZEN back to Socrates – I already know the answer – I need to relax and go with the flow…

Hey, thanks James – you are an EXCELLENT spiritual teacher (hahaha!).
