Are You Unique Enough?
While I have talked about being unique and not following the crowd before, this post talks about if you really are unique enough. I was watching a video on the importance of being charismatic this morning by the worlds most average guy. Now I’m not saying his content wasn’t spot on because it was actually extremely good but anyone could have been saying it. Now I don’t have a problem with being average, it can actually really help sometimes, but I thought anyone could be saying this.
I don’t really agree with the saying that you have to be unique, I prefer be yourself as the competition is yourself, that said you do need to do things to stand out from the average crowd when you can;
- Written
I very rarely read up on a subject before I write about it, very rarely. This can be a bad thing because it can mean your facts are not always accurate, but it does give me the advantage that I don’t get influenced by other peoples words, don’t get me wrong I get my inspiration from reading comments and other sites etc, but that inspiration comes from one or two words, not by reading a post and trying to re-write it.
If you have a feeling your content is a bit average or a bit stale then there are a few ways of spicing it up, I always like to break the post up into bullet points, I find it’s easier to get the point across, the other thing I like is to add an interesting image or story, something that stimulates an image in the reader which breaks up the potential choir of reading a post no matter what the subject matter.
- Audio
I have listened to some podcasts (mainly because I will be releasing mine soon) recently and the amount of monotone voices out there is ridiculous. If that’s how you speak though how do you get round it? Well you could break up the podcast with snippets from other people or other sounds bites. Another way to do it is have a recognisable jingle or sound that locks people onto you so that you become memorable for the sound and not a monotone voice.
Equally low deep voices can sometimes get annoying after a while and especially in a car become difficult to hear, so try and create some pattern in the way you talk, equally if you are high pitched then try and experiment with slowing your voice down etc. Ultimately if your happy with your voice then go for it, just be aware that some won’t like it, some will.
- Video
As my video below demonstrates I’m a big fan on un-prepared content and no fluff editing, raw InfoPreneur. I’m also big enough to admit that I could be missing a trick here by not having an uber professional intro and graphics etc, but I think that ties into the whole image I have here, it’s all about the content not the packaging.
That said soem markets require highly polished, graphic rich edits. I get that so if you are in that type of scene then make sure you edit it properly and make sure the sound is spot on, which is something I have realised and now use a mic gun. You know yourself some videos and instantly boring or annoying, some people will find my videos annoying, but do everything you can to try and make sure your video presence is everything it needs to be.
- You
You can only be you, you can’t go out there and be the new Jordan Cooper or Allyn ”Master of my own domain” Hane. What you can do is get out there and be you, I’m fairly sure there is no one exactly like me in my market place. That means my only competition is me, if you go out there and pretend to be wacky or the tough guy you will come unstuck in a big way.
Seen all these home video shows where you can instantly tell which video is a set up just to win $250 by getting aired on the show? That’s exactly how people will judge a site or person if they pretend to be someone they clearly aren’t. Please don’t try and be like your idols or the top flight in your market, do it your own way.

i think some people are very influenced by others and that can cause problems where content is concerned. I like it when you can see the heart in writing, like your site, you are real and that is the most important thing for me. When I flip through sites and something doesn’t catch my eye I keep going, i feel some people write just for writing. Not Genuine. I am real, as most know, and working on that everyday. Thanks for the post James, as always you are inspiring.

Hi James,
In the end, you still have to pitch to your market!
We have an entertainer in the United States by the name of “Pat Sajak”. (You can Google him and he’ll pop right up.) He had his own talk show for about a year in 1989, man this guy was a jerk! Period. However he was a extremely popular host of a game show between the years of 1981 to 1989. He would still be doing his game show (Wheel of Fortune) if it were not for him doing this awful talk show. Being himself on his talk show definitely did not pay off for him.
I guess my point is that you can be yourself, however you still have to work within some sort of a framework of personal discipline.

Pat Sajak is still the host of Wheel of Fortune (syndicated and it airs in the early evening) and the show is the longest running syndicated game show in history.

While his talk show may not have been your favourite, there were/are worst hosts.

HI James,
nice post. This is one greatest point i often tell my friends and readers. Trying to become someone else, limits your potentials. For example; if you try to be like me, you will certainly be “second me”. You can’t really be someone else, no matter how much you try. you can’t be the original, the best you can get is a photocopy.

This goes in the face of you saying the “GaryV” of Britain, which I have seen said on twitter and such, whole I can understand that will likely grab some attention, then, what of those who don’t know anything of Gary V?
I’d say drop that moniker, follow your one advice and be you!
As you put it…
“You can only be you, you can’t go out there and be the new Jordan Cooper or Allyn ”Master of my own domain” Hane. ”
Nor can you be Gary V
Who is he anyway?
On the whole, great post, I think Heather nailed it in short in her comment.

We seem to have some pretty similar view on social media marketing. On the subject of video I agree yet I know I need to improve. I am aiming to develop a unique style based on talking to people. The interesting thing is I see my videos pop up on other Blogs however lack bigger views on You Tube.
Reading what you have said I think the problem is I have been trying to duplicate someone else instead of finding my own voice. Especially in audio and video. My articles seem to get good to better than average reads.
So I agree it’s about finding yourself and your voice and then going with that and people will find you.

Always be you and let that flow through everything you do. If you don’t, you’re just wasting your time. Try being someone else or putting up these walls of fakeness and see how happy that makes you….it just won’t feel right.

I think this is great advice, James.
No one can be a perfect you, expect you. Isn’t it amazing that there are over 6 billion people on the planet and no two people are alike? We all have our own experiences, viewpoints, voices, ideas, etc and there is room for all of us.
You can try very hard to copy someone else, but it will not work for long as the pretense can get very tiring. Besides, with everyone being unique, the world is just waiting for you to show your true authentic self.

I love this post; i find it so meaningful. The following statement is very significant, “that means my only competition is me . . .”

By being yourself you can easily be unique but only being yourself is not good. You sometime need to do things which defy your own principles. I have faced this rare truth quite many times.
The main question about being unique is how not to repeat stuffs. Because you will somehow end up blogging same thing as others. One way would be to say the things in your style.

I like this statement: it’s all about the content, not the packaging.
I think sometimes, it’s also a good idea to tell your readers what your interests are (of course during appropriate times). Sharing details about your interest helps your readers know more about you and provides a sense of individuality.

No one is perfect and that’s what makes all this so awesome. Just be you and forget about trying to be better than someone else. If you get good at what you do and discover who you are and exploit that in the lives of others then you basically destroy the competition. Part of what I just said is what Larry Winget said the smartest thing to ever come out of his mouth was.

90% of my research is on google at the time of writing posts, if it needs it. I also like the spontenaity and real feel of a blog like this. I want mine to feel like I am just talking to my friends and they are nodding along, not nodding off. I know of some terrible podcasts as well that promote the nodding off. Yours will not be one of them, you can’t help but to be energetic and engaging when you speak.

We are all unique – our DNA screams it, our finger prints scream it.
It is unfortunate that a lot of people just have to be guided by others.
Rather than being guide by others, understand the basics of what you want to do, listen to your inner guide and get to work.
You will never be as successful as whoever you copy because it is against the course of life.
