Are you running too many websites?
I was talking to DragonBlogger the other day on twitter about how we promote our websites and how much work it takes to write fresh content and promote it etc. Now I love Justin’s site and he has an enormous following and a huge amount of traffic, but what he said stunned me.
Justin actually said his site would be even bigger if he wasn’t running several other blogs. Even bigger? His site is ranking at 41,000 on Alexa and it got me thinking, when my site is at that level (hopefully in another 8 weeks or so) I don’t want to be handling other sites as well.
- Too thin
When I make my jam on toast in the morning, I spread my butter on first right to the edges, then add the jam. Not too much that it ends up all over my face, but enough that it gives me my fix. By running too many websites you run the risk of not handling any of them properly. It seems like every other day I hear someone saying they are working on a new site, which is why they are only posting new content once a week on there site.
If you can’t manage one site them don’t go and set another three up! It’s a full time job for me running this site. 14 posts a week, replying to everything (common sense applies) I honestly don’t think I could run a complete different website as effectively by myself.
- Focus
My Get Your Focus post illustrates this point, but all too often I see people losing their focus. ‘This one is going to be massive’ or ‘This will complement my existing site’ Put all your energy into one project until that project is either self sufficient or it’s complete.
Think of it this way, if you were in a heavy fire fight, would you a; put it on full auto and spray and pray or b; single aimed shots? Focus on your target and hit the mark.
- Effort
I mentioned earlier that I honestly don’t think I could run another site effectively. With this site I produce new content 14 times a week, reply to everything I can, promote the hell out of the site and help everyone I can. On top of this I study in order to build more quality into this site.
I know for a fact if I knew I had ignored a request for help or heaven forbid not posted any new content for a day, I would feel ill. I am 100% dedicated to this site and it’s followers.
I know it can be done, but please make a success out of one business/website before you start another 2 or 3.
What does everyone think?

Good article, thanks for mentioning me. I disagree with some of it because many people reach success by starting 4 or 5 niche sites or more that have extremely specific focus and content. They are also the best types of AdSense earners. Also as a blogger who earns money, you should keep paid content to less than 25% of your normal posts. By having more blogs allows me to take more paid assignments and spead them out. In addition some blog earning programs don’t allow others, PayU2Blog for example forbids you to use them on the same blog as a SocialSpark registered blog. So to capitalize on earning potential you need to run many blogs.
My dragonblogger was originally not content specific enough, I started doing tech, personal, entertainment and poetry on one blog. I lost readers of one subject when I posted articles on other subjects. If you have lots of ideas and want to blog about many topics, better to have separate blogs than a mixed focus one, unless it is a magazine type blog.
So I split my poetry into wandererthoughts.com and my personal diary to justingermino.com and left dragonblogger.com for my technology, blogging and entertainment articles.
I did experiments with 2 other blogs for affiliates, but sometimes you don’t want to put something in your primary blog because it may not work or hurt reputation. I also write guest posts for 4 other blogs, which isn’t really managing my own site. I help my wife by handling the wordpress administration of her two blogs as well thechefscookbook.com and rockalongproductions.com
But you are right, my time is so divided among so many sites, dragonblogger would be 2x as large at least. However I make money from all 3 of my blogs, and if all 3 grow well, I may be 3x as profitable, just not as quickly.

Oh man!
I am becoming more and more a believer in ‘The Secret’ each passing minute because I keep getting answers to my blogging questions. Or maybe I’m becoming more a believer in “TheInfoPreneur” because so many of my answers are being found here!
So, for this post, I’m hoping I can both heed James’ warning but also capitalize on Justin’s call to opportunity.
Here’s why…
When I started http://www.donpower.me I had no idea what it was going to be about and it seems to be changing everyday. Lately, it has been about building a community of heavy duty bloggers (wow – that is so cool!) by engaging with each other across their blogs and other social media platforms – (thanks to @dragonblogger for his Random Twitter Word Poem – Dark Fate).
I’ve been petitioning James for tips on how to keep up with the all the positive, valuable interactions that are coming up as a result.
(ie: I owe several commentors a reply across several of my posts as we speak!)
But I also don’t ever want to go back to a day job to support my family. In a 20 year career, I’ve had maybe 2 or 3 years where I’ve been really happy or fulfilled at work – whereas blogging – even though I’ve only been doing it for about a month – represents everything that should be right about a (potential) career. It’s challenging, life affirming, fun, and difficult as hell!
But as much as I’m enjoying the free flow that a personal blog allows (or one that I don’t really intend on “monetizing”), I want to take what I’ve learned and create a blog about something thaht probably could be monetized – “Daddy Blogging”.
I’ve even registered a domain but have not had any chance to launch or populate it yet. But I’ve got a hundred good stories and an ongoing life of stories that I can’t wait to tell…
But I don’t want to sacrifice the people that have become my friends, contributors and confidants around my inaugural blog – donpower.ME
So, I am right in the wheelhouse of who you are speaking to in this post James!
So what do I do Dragonblogger? I have no real way to monetize my personal blog and I have some great ideas on how to substantially differentiate myself for the DaddyBlogger world…
Do I dive in the deep end even though I’ve only just learned to dog paddle?

Could you incorporate daddy blogging into your own site perhaps?
This is going to be kind of against what I said earlier, but your own site is startint to sustain it’s self, so I think you can absolutely do it.
I’m sure Justin will agree. I would be wary of how much time it takes to get a site up and running as you are fully aware, so maybe write and store some posts before you launch the new site so you can keep up with donpower.
To be honest with you though, looking at your site, I think you could absolutely monetize it, with a bit of thought and brainstorming you may not need to set that second site up?…

anytime brother, now send me that guest post!
You know I have been blogging since July of this year (2009) and I started with one blog. Of course at the beginning it didn’t have alot of traffic so I thought I would dabble a bit and start another blog. Now both blogs did not have a lot of traffic and I was able to handle them, but I did find myself a little out of focus. This one that is my main blog I was neglecting a bit and was really the reason I started blogging. So after a couple of months I decided I would just focus on one blog for now. Which is this one. I have found I have better focus and am able to deliver more creative information now. Not to mention as my traffic increased on my main blog I have found it even more important to deliver information more regularly and respond to comments. I want to keep my readers and keep giving them information.
Having said that I think in the future when I get to be a more experienced blogger I may be able to handle two or more blogs, but for now I just want to focus on one.

I can connect with this as I’m running three blogs at the moment, however, after your “One Huge Mistake” blog, I may drop focus on my own blog for a bit as yes, it’s a blog about blogging, and I’m still trying to get my other blogs out there.
One blog is about how to manage bipolar relationships based on my own experiences that my wife and I go through, which is receiving a TON of great feedback, so that is my main blog.
The other blog is about my technical niche in software development, and although that’s a pretty large community to go after, I feel that it may be a good fit down the road.
I can see how managing more than one blog can spread us out thin so…it may be worth going through another round of What Matters Most and see what comes up on the chopping block.
Thanks again!

Experience is something that people seem to be looking more into with more and more monetization blogs coming out. Because of this – to gain some credibility and some ‘experience’ I think running a few blogs wouldn’t hurt.
I’ve got quite a few blog ideas and am in the process of starting a few more in totally different niches. While I agree it’s probably better to focus on the one blog or ‘business’ I think I can gain more experience and have better ‘credibility’ but running a 2+ sites. Also working for others and getting my hands a bit more dirty than working in the one niche.

Another great reason to start out with multiple sites is that you don’t really know what is going to click with readers.
As Seth Godin has alluded to in a few of his posts, using the scientific method in business is a good way to become more profitable and more successful. This means experimenting. Make a site, see what clicks and what doesn’t. Make changes based on your results. Come on, domains are cheap.
Once you have several sites, start focusing on the ones that are the most profitable, however you define profitable. You’ll end up where you want to be.
What do you with sites that don’t work out? Either keep them up for posterity or sell them off. If you have chosen niches carefully, there will always be a market for an existing site with content.

If you’re making a living from blogging you want to make sure that you’re not replacing one ‘millstone’ job with another (ie writing the blog).
Some big blogs (Chris Guillebeau or Men with Pens) post only a couple of times per week and have massive traffic.

With your permission, I am going to ask some of my trusted blogging colleagues to join me here – to give me their opininon on whether or not I can handle creating a second blog (for the daddy blogging niche) or whether I should just reposition my inaugural blog – http://www.donpower.me to fit a “monetized” iteration of a daddy blog going forward…
Now, this is not all about me…You have many newbie bloggers like me who are just getting to the point where they need to bring their blogs to the next level – one way or the other changes have to be made in order to build a blog for success (after the initial – “OK, I’ve taught myself how to do this” phase has ended.
Hopefully those readers will also gain some insight based on the opininon of established and trusted bloggers who have already passed through this looking glass!
Cheers! I’m going now to invite some colleagues via Twitter – hopefully some of them will show up! Here goes…
QUESTION: Should I reposition http://www.donpower.me for a daddy blog going forward or shold I create a new daddyblog altogether…
PROS: 1. Fresh start – avoid mistakes I’ve made on inaugural blog
2. I have 2 great daddy blog domain names that would be killer for the daddy blog world
3. Did I mention FRESH START and setting things up right rfom the beginning?
CONS: 1. I can barely keep up with 1 blog – how can I think I”ll manage two?
2. I don’t want to lose the momentum (ORGANIC MOMENTUM) that has been developing on donpower.me
3. I don’t want to scarifice the trusted relatinships I’ve built around donpower.me . Even if they don’t leave if the blog changes focus, I’m going to have to spend much more time on a daddy blog and I don’t know – as per the premise of THIS POST – if that’s such a good idea at this stage in my blogging “career”.
(Hopefully, some of you are still reading this!).
Thanks in advance to James and all who reply!

Don, I have a few blogs on the go. If blogging was my only online focus, it wouldn’t be so hard to maintain.
However I also admin two communities, soon to be 3 so having too many blogs is time consuming.
But I think if you have the time to commit to it then go for it.
With a Daddy blog think of the people you’ll attract. You will be able to market to all the daddy bloggers and parent bloggers out there.

I will chime in with an agreement that you should do a new blog for the daddy blog site. Mommy blogs are freaking huge right now, with real money being made. Here in Indiana there was a blogging conference and they had a whole section on mommy blogging.
I’ve had a “throw the spaghetti on the wall and see if some will stick” philosophy with online marketing. I’ve made a living that way, but none of it I would say is from “blogging,” per se. I make a few hundred a month in Adsense, a few hundred in affiliate marketing commissions, and a lot in my tutorial subscriptions (mainly merchanttutorials.com). I’ve got a few ideas in the hopper, too, that I’ll let you know about soon. The key, I believe Allyn would agree, is to find as niche of a niche as you can. For example, maybe “daddy blogging” is too general, and you’d want to focus on “dads who work at home” or “dads of toddlers,” something like that.

Ok, so here’s what I think.
You guys should first figure out why you are “blogging” or “internet marketing.”
Me, I am in it to make money. Now, I have my Blogger Illustrated site (which is my ‘home’ where I make friends not money) and I have my beer site which is kind of an experiment in “social blogging” mixed with SEO, etc.. and an excuse to drink beers as a business expense…
Other than that, I have 211 other websites (and I start on average 5 new ones each week lately). Not all make money, but many will over time. While you guys take time writing posts, mine is spent buying pre-owned domains and putting sites on them.
I outsource 99% of the content. Once the site settles down and I can see what it’s gonna do, I monetize it (sometimes I wait 6-8 months). Some sites hit homeruns, others barely break the Mendoza line, so I dump em’ or use em another way.
Now, I think a lot of you guys are wanting both. You wanna be buddies with everyone and have some fun, and hopefully, maybe, someday, make some cash and be the next Darren Rowse. But boys, I’m here to tell you that that is a tough proposition.
The way I do it is tough too, but once I get these sites cranking, I walk away from them and collect the checks. If you stay a social blogger, you will then only be as good as your last post. Once you stop posting, your audience will dry up overnight.
Then of course there’s the site I sold for $30K … that’s a whole ‘nuther revenue stream.
so there is my advice, best to all ya!

Less blogs, not being able to find what your true blog enjoyment is, what readers want most, etc.
Well that helped me, after writing that I decided if you can manage more then one and they are all your passions, go for it, if you have trouble with one, stick with it and bulk it up.

I think it really comes down to how much work you can handle while still producing great content that serves the needs and interests of your readers. So I think you are wise to suggest that we don’t spread ourselves too thin.
Don, for you there are 2 issues. 1 is time management but the other regards your communications goals and the needs of your audience. While you didn’t start with a concrete editorial plan for the first blog you have found your way into this blogging niche and it seems to be working quite well. A daddy blog is an entirely different bird. While there may be some audience cross-over, you are going to be serving different content to a different group of people.
Given that, I think the daddy blog has to be a separate entity otherwise both messages may get muddled. When topics are sufficiently distinct it makes sense to separate them. If you are going to write content for both audiences anyway, it won’t take you more time to post to separate blogs than if you posted to separate categories on one blog. So I think you can better serve each audience by providing them with their own sites. While it may take awhile to establish a following on the new blog, that’s a short-term problem. If you think about the long-term goals, I think separate sites would work best. Good luck!

Sorry it took me so long to chime in, I am still traveling (hey I work for myself, so I make my schedule) but I have lots to say on this one. I will try to keep it less than 500 words:
If you are passionate about a topic, and you want to write about it, then do it. I have had as many as 7 blogs going at once ( I now only have 2 and develop/design others as well as manage a few but only write content for mine now). First thing I want to say about it is out of 12+ blogs, my latest is the only one I can’t wait to write an article, can’t wait to reply to comments, I can’t wait to comment on other blogs in this niche. It makes a difference. I still make a living mainly from my other site (online fence store) but I neglect it because I have no passion for it anymore.
The problem with many bloggers (myself included) is we are addicts by nature. We want immediate satisfaction like an addict does. It takes patience to stick around in this industry (something I seldom have) and you WILL fail multiple times.
The stories of 6 figure bloggers are few and far between so DON’T do it for the money and you just might make a living.
One last thing for James, you don’t have to write 14 articles a week, most of us don’t have time to read all 14 of them because we read other blogs too. There is a threshold of not enough content, but there is also a threshold of too much content. IMHO 5-7 posts a week is more than enough….

Hi John,
Is there much money to be made in owning so many domains? 400 domains must have cost you thousands

Operated 400 domains! I can hardly SAY 400 domains.
Insane.
I guess that’s why you’re in a straight jacket John!

I am running bluepop13.com and am starting up a new project site next month that I have big plans for. Starting small of course. I also have another blog on a topic I enjoy and that’s it. Three is where it’s good for me and we’ll see how I do.
Ultimately I am going to mainly concentrate on my home which is bluepop13.com. That’s where I’ll mostly live at and my other projects will be on the side of that until I get some further ideas of what I’d like to do with them. I think it has a lot to do with how you plan on managing things and your passion for doing so.

Yeah I agree that managing your time and passion is vital.
I think different bloggers has different approach when come into managing their websites/blog.
But, before you have one successful one, I think it’s better to stick on it until it’s pay off.
Thanks for sharing.

I think there are two sides of a coin. If you already have a super successful blog with nationwide audience (like TechCrunch), it is better to just focus on it and maintain its reputation and quality.
But for most bloggers, they hardly get 100 uniques per day and having more blogs make it easier for them to make extra money.

Yeah true, on the other hand though if they are only making a bit of money across a few different sites, what would happen if they focused on one or two sites?

Hmm, I feel you man.
Running one blog is overwhelming enough.
I think laser sharp focus is required in making the one blog successful too.
yes, there are naturally good multi-taskers but nothing beats putting all your eggs into one blog as a blogger.
I am a little guilty of having more than a blog but what about niche blogs mainly for profit?

Yeah I have heard this a lot and know people doing it effectively. My train of thought is instead of having little websites making bits of cash, why not have one site making tons of cash. It’s a risky move though. I’m not sure whether I’m right or wrong, I suppose only time will tell

I’ll say without a doubt it’s hard to maintain any website in a sense.
There are very few times a standalone website can “maintain itself” to keep drawing a crowd.
It’s all about how you do it, some people are natural born writers and can just sit down and write something people love. It takes patience, I will tell you that much.

Agree with this one. About 3 1/2 years ago, I spent over a $1000 on a “how to” course in affiliate marketing from a very famous Internet Marketer. While the information was pretty generic, I did get one nugget of wisdom…he said to concentrate JUST on one niche and keep working it at till you have success. Following this one bit of advice, I managed to make a full-time income out of affiliate marketing. So I guess it was worth the money I spent…

INteresting man, $1,000 is a lot, but like you say if that provided you with a full time income then money well spent. Out of interest what made you decide that you were willing to pay that much for it?

Haha…good marketing. An excellent product launch. Got reeled in like a prize sport fish.
It was a point where I wasn’t taking affiliate marketing seriously. I decided to find the best course out there and dedicate myself 100% to following it step-by-step. In hindsight, I disagree with a lot of what was taught, but I can’t really complain with the outcome.

I made the mistake of trying to work on too many sites at once. I’ve moved back to concentrating on just one (I do have a 9-5 job already!).

I have about 5 or 6 blogs that I post on or hire writers to post on 2-3x per week. My blog is 2-3 posts per week, and that’s good enough for me.
I’d rather offer a solid post per week then write a bunch of fluff (not that you do). Some bloggers post every day, but get nothing more than 100 words out…that’s a waste of time.
I don’t mind managing other blogs, but I know when to outsource, hire writers, and pay for quality work.

I’m guilty of this too. I launched a second blog a few months back, October 2009 to be precise. I barely promote the site and it has not been updated for the past 2 months now. Till date the traffic to that blog is down to a pathetic 30 visitors per week most of them being free dofollow backlink seekers. I’m already making plans to shut it down soonest as soon as I can remove all links to it from my primary blog.
I thought I could increase my earnings online by launching a new site but it’s mucho trabajo (work) all for nothing. I’ll just swallow my pride and focus on my primary make money online-blogging tips blog.
I’d probably sell it off for $20 as it already has PR 1. LOL.
