A Step by Step Approach, How I Do It
This post was going to be in response to a post I read on problogger in which the guest poster talked about increasing his Alexa ranking by 2,000,000 places in two months. This site went from being ranked 8,500,000 just over 11 weeks ago to now a 3 month average of 93,000 and a 1 month average of 54,000, with a US ranking of 35,000. Now I’m not too bothered about Alexa ranking as it’s not entirely accurate, but it’s something I do loosely follow.
I decided to change the title and format of the post in reply to Eleanor’s recent comment. I hold down a 12hr day job, in which I do shifts so I’m not always on the net at the same times every day. For the purpose of this post though I will take my day shift which is 7am-7pm (including my travel time) and detail hour to hour what I am doing. I’ll also list my priorities too, please excuse the military style timings, old habits die hard;
0600- Wake up and wash.
o610- Dressed and downstairs.
0620-Switch laptop on and while that is starting up, I’ll make my breakfast and a coffee.
0625- Read and reply to comments on site, emails and if time @ tweets.
0700- Travel to work, If I get the train (which I sometimes do, I’ll continue to catch up on twitter via my phone, or think about post ideas and bit’s for my book.
0800-1200- Work.
1200-1245- Break, more work on post ideas and work on the book, time on twitter, while eating.
1245-1600- Work.
1600-1620- Break, Inspiration by reading random sites, not related to this site or twitter.
1620-1800- Work.
1800-1900- Travel home and start to write that days posts. Either into my phone or on paper in bullet points.
1900-2200- Write posts, reply to the comments, emails, @ tweets and general work on the site. Responding to the emails is the most time consuming.
2200-2330- Read other sites and leave comments (if I can add value). I do a combination of visiting every person’s site who comments and related forums etc.
2330-0100-Run over time to either promote the site more or reply to emails etc. At the moment I’m finding this time usefull to write my book I plan to release in the coming months.
0100-0600- Bed, ready for another awesome day!
Priorities;
- Site
My absolute priority is creating daily fresh content for the site. If I have to sacrifice promoting because of time I will. The biggest mistake most people make is they spend too much time promoting, but all that promotion is useless if the reader doesn’t have great content to read.
- Replies
This is really a very close second. Replying to everything is vital. I’m human so sometimes I will miss the odd @ reply amongst all the Follow Friday tweets etc, but I would happily say I reply to 90-95% of everything I get. Make sure you keep replying to everything you get towards the top of your list, remember who put you there in the first place!
- Promotion
You have to promote your work, writing great content or producing an amazing product and waiting for people to come to you, just won’t cut it these days. Get out there and promote the hell out of your site, BUT only if you have completed your site work and replied to everything first.
- Future
After all this is done, then you can work on the future of your business or website, whether that be writing posts to schedule or a pitch for a new product or even a book like me, make sure you do think about the future, but only after you have completed everything else.
I like to reply to the comments in bulk probably twice or three times a day, same with @ tweets and emails. If you keep stopping to reply to everything as soon as it comes in, it’s going to take you an age to do anything.
Hopefully this will go some way to helping you plan your day a bit better and show you how many hours it really does take to have a full time job and get a website to where you want it.
What does everyone think?

James, Wow
You definitely get it done. I’m working on ways I can better improve how I write, reply and promote my site. Thanks a million for sharing how you do it. I’m sure I’m not the only person who was curious about this.
It’s always good to ‘see a goal so you can create your own’.
Hint: That line has something to do with my project coming out next month. Thought I’d sneak it in there. It also has to do with you showing us how you do it so we can get an idea for how we might do it.
Keep going man. Keep rocking out there!

Ralph, you took the words right out of my mouth.
On the other hand, I’m 54 years old and coming up on 55 fast, and I think I am willing to make some concessions to my age, and take a little more sedate pace than you, James. I’m going to try to get to the same place, but it just will take me a bit longer. Thanks for the play-by-play though. It’s quite instructional on how to make use of time.

Yeah I suppose lifestyle etc does play a part, I’ve always been the sort of person who would do an ultra marathon just to win a bet, which kind of explains the work rate I suppose

Anyway, it was interesting to see just how much time you spend on your readers… I think your priorities make sense, but if I was taking the same ones I’d have them in a different order. Just due to the way I think
I’d have: Future, Site, Replies, Promotion. Though they would all be very close, knowing where I’m headed is far more important to me personally. Since I only write for the site three times a week, I spend the rest of the time working on the ‘Replies’ part and the design… ‘Promotion’ I spend some time doing every day as well, but not nearly as vigourously!

Hi Heather,
Yeah it’s completely down to how you post, because I post at least once a day sometimes two then it means I have to work on the site first. Interesting view point though!

Hey again
I can understand the way you do it as well; I think probably if I was writing more in a week my priorities would reflect yours closer lol. Certainly interesting to think about!

Hi James,
Seriously though, I do appreciate it. Only problem is, I have another. When you talk about promoting, are Twitter and sprinkling your crumbs the only things you do? I use the word ‘only’ very loosely because I know you don’t only do anything. You tweet on hyper drive and post meaningful comments on a minimum of 20 blogs. But do you have any other methods that I’ve not heard about yet?
Thank you for answering my question so comprehensively
Thank you again. You are an inspiration and I have literally thanked God for bringing you under my radar at just the right time.
Have a great evening,
Eleanor

Hi Eleanor,
I do comment on a lot of different sites and forums and yes I tweet a lot, as I said it’s my site so I’m going to promote the hell ouot of it.
Erm, what else do I do?…. Guest post, I target big sites, small sites, in between sites, by the end of this month i will have submitted about 15 guest posts as well as published around 40-50 posts on this site.
It’s getting the ball rolling and making sure it keeps gathering pace
Maybe I need to do a post on how and where I promote etc

Do you know what I really respect about you James? You are completely genuine in your desire to do all you can to help people. It’s up to us to put the work in and follow your advice but you don’t keep any of it to yourself. Lots of online marketing hype talks about wanting to help but they except you to buy into that help by joining their down line or promoting their product. Either that or they keep the best tactics of how they really do it all to themselves.
I love that with you you’ll happily share exactly what you’re doing and you have no fear that someone will come along and usurp your place. I can’t help but wonder how many of us can/will follow your lead and reach our potential?

Where do you get the energy? I’m tired just reading about your typical day!
I started getting up earlier, so now I’m up at 6:30am and after taking a shower, am on the computer, checking my site, responding to emails, reading my RSS reader until I go to work for 8:30. I work 8:30 – 4:30 and you would think that I have tons of time in the evenings, but it goes by so fast! I’m not as disciplined as you and like to watch some of my favourite shows sometimes. But, working all day on the computer and then coming home and working all evening on the computer can get really tough.
I think it’s good to take a break every once in a while, so that you recharge your batteries. Certain days, I batch write my posts, other days I comment on blogs, sometimes I forget about Twitter for a day or two
I think it’s a marathon and not a sprint, and it’s particularly easy to get burned out at the beginning when you first start blogging.
I hope you are able to sustain the same drive, after six months to a year from now. Can you imagine all that you would have accomplished, if you continue with your current schedule. Awesome!
You definitely have to make time for real people in your real life, though. Internet friends are good, but they can’t feed you chicken soup when you have a cold

Blogging, or administrating a website can be very time consuming. Who ever said it’s not a job was wrong.
It’s not easy to divide your time either. I think it’s important to make time for a social life too.
