7 Relaxed, But Great Ways To Write
We’ve all seen posts with hundreds if not thousands of comments and sometimes that post didn’t actually have a lot of content in it, sometimes it was just one question or one video that sparked a huge debate. Here is my breakdown to writing a very quick and easy post that will shoot straight to your most popular list.
- Poll
Polling your readers is a great easy post, but that doesn’t mean it’s a bad post. You could make a poll about anything (you can find a wordpress poll plugin here) no matter what market you are in. I have run two polls on this site so far, each with a good response. One was asking what the readers of this site wanted more of, one was for a runner up prize. Either way letting your readers poll answers to a question is a really good way of getting to know your readers a lot better and to actually let the readers feel connected with whats going on.
- Question
Asking your readers a question is bound to deliver some answers and answer spawn debates, that in turn brings traffic. It doesn’t matter if you’re into marketing online or the consumer white goods market asking questions is a great great way to fire up a site. I know of one problogger who quite regularly posts content that is pretty much a padded out question and it gets a great response.
It’s especially good if the poll doesn’t quite hit the mark and you want your readers to actually elaborate a little bit on their answers. Hopefully you will get people with differing opinions and the whole community gets involved. Please be aware not to start fights though, it’s not really good juju going onto someone else’s site and start flaming everyone to be clever or to do it then hide behind the shield of being real (more on this soon)
- Comparison
I love making comparisons, for me I think about it a lot as I like analysing the way different people are despite having the same options in life. My post Problogger V Gary Vaynerchuk looked at the comparisons of someone who is fired up and always on the go (Gary) compared to the more zen like Darren Rowse (Problogger). 83 comments later and the post did really well. Look at your market place, if you’re in the lifestyle design type niche then look at the big guns in your market, are they different, if so how? Then put it to your readers.
Offering comparisons allows you to talk about so many other things, maybe even follow up posts about the different traits etc.
- Links
A monthly round up of your best and most popular posts are great for recycling old content whilst actually providing fresh content if you can talk about what it is that made those posts so popular. Another way to use links is to link to 5 of your absolute must reads on the net, or 5 really cool website designs. What ever fits your niche, but link out and actually show people what you are interested in and why.
It’s a great way to show some love for the people you really do follow closely, but to draw people and show then some new sites and get them passing the word onto their friends.
- Be Good
Being the motivating one is great, it’s great to actually make people go about their day with a smile, so do something that will make them feel happy and part of your site rather than the usual you speak and they listen type of site. You can do this in a variety of ways; pure thank you posts that mention individuals or a hyped pumped up post. Whatever your style making people smile is a great motivator for people to come back and see what you are all about.
- Giveaway
Give something away, simple. People love having the chance to win something, they love the possibility it could be them out of everyone else they might just be the ones that win. Don’t worry you don’t have to give a thousand dollars away or anything like that.
It could be something as simple as a tester product, say for example if you run a hair products company, then you could run a competition to win a mini-hamper, but all they would have to do is enter their details in a mailing list, or spread your post to 5 of their friends etc. You can really capitalize on giveaways which will actually result (hopefully) in you earning more in business than the products you’re giving away actually costs.
- Rant
Now I’ve turned a corner both personally and in this site, but that said rants done properly can be a good post and should be fairly easy to write as rants constantly feed the fingers. You really have to be careful with this one though as I said I’ve turned a corner with this site and emotionally and don’t want to get involved in flaming other people when it actually doesn’t affect me, that said I still read things that lights me up, but I refuse to let the readers of this site be distracted by it and instead want them to be focused on empire building.
If you do have a rant, I think a safe way to do it and to get people engaging with it is to try and have a bit of padding around it in which your readers will take a lot of positives away from it, for instance if your rant is about a corporate customer services helpline that is clearly not in the country or the corporation and as such you simply can’t get your problem understood, then rant about it. Remember to add the constructive solution to it though.
So there you go 7 relaxed ways to make a great post what does everyone think?

You hit it dead on with the rant: you want to bring up up, but let them down easy. If you go negative, twist it back positive at the end, leave people on a high note.
I just read a rant a few hours ago that was stupendously and negatively militant. A blogger who hates bloggers. A truckload of highly critical language, much of it abstract yet personal attacks. “People that do this thing are stupid.”
What this person doesn’t understand is that it’s really none of his or her business whether someone is stupid.
What was stupid was the rant.
Rants can be good if the result uplifts. Otherwise, cheap thrill.

Dave absolutely right, I’ve got a post coming out about that soon called ”Stop Hiding Behind The Shield of Being Real”
Interesting ideas there. One thing I’ve found is that my most popular posts have tended to be
a) relatively short, which I think somehow encourages readers to engage more. Perhaps longer posts give readers too much to respond to so that they end up leaving without commenting. Perhaps.
b) provoking imagination or discussion. Whether it is humour, politics, rant or whatever, if the reader can immediately engage then they are obviously more likely to comment. This sounds so obvious but I guess posts can be empty, leaving little room to actually respond.

yeah good points Mo, do you find guest posts or off the wall content that your readers aren’t used to do well or not?
Good question. I tend to find that how well a guest post does is mainly driven by who they are – i.e. how many followers they have etc. Guest posts almost always seem to get less comments, partly because my own readers might skip the post because it isn’t me, or perhaps refrain from commenting for the same reason. But they don’t necessarily get less traffic, yours didn’t, for example, so it’s very hard to tell. I’ve certainly gained followers from guest posting myself.

I always appreciate ideas for generating blog content. I think that sometimes I blog at people instead of to them. This was a good reminder to engage the readers more. Thanks.

Great post. I specifically like the idea of doing a monthly round-up of your best articles in one manageable article. A great way to overcome the end of teh month writers block, whilst at the same time driving EVEN MORE traffic to that month’s blog posts.
Thanks for the WP poll plugin too, been wondering which is a good one to use.

I like the idea of adding a positive solution to a rant post. While I don’t mind reading a good rant now and again, I’ve seen where they can just spiral out of control, which is a total turn off.

Yep, questions work wonders – it’s a great tool to engage with your community ! And link building as well – it further develops your relationship with other bloggers and helps them gain more traffic !
I really liked your problogger vs. Gary V. post, it was awesome, and it inspires me to do something as action-oriented as that !

I have never tried a poll, but I think that would be a lot of fun. I think recycling content is a good method to use when you are really at a dead end on what to post or if you need something to quickly inspire you. I have not used it yet, but see it in my future.

I have got to try some of these to get traffic and comments going in the right direction. If you want to rant, head over to my site and guest post. But while rants are fun, be nice to others. your credibility overall is not worth the steam it blows off. If you must publish something like that, set up a secret non indexed blog over at blogger and rant to your hearts content. chances are no one will ever know….

There’s one post that I always find popular and thats a list of other blogs posts or bloggers. Lot’s of my readers find that useful.
Looking at your list (like your unofficial mentors post) featuring yours truly, has got you 92 comments, which backs up my point.

Your readers’ involvement is the factor I notice in most of the tips you mentioned above. Perhaps it is also good to try creating a post that includes five or ten of the people who have provided the best set of comments in your blog for the past few months.

I love the idea of comparisons. That’s something I should think about more. I could do a lot with jewelry and diamonds. Good stuff. I always like posts that get my brain working. I tend to write relaxed anyway. It’s just the way I am. I’ve only written a couple of rant posts in the past. I don’t really like those. Don’t like the negative energy they bring. Plus, I don’t like how it makes me look or feel afterwards. I try to remain positive and upbeat. It makes me sleep good at night!

The best thing I could probably do is write a rant. Usually something that is really bugging you is probably bugging a lot of other people too. Just have to be prepared for the flip side of that opinion coming back at ya.

Great list of tips James.
Wrting from the heart and sharing as much of my story as possible is what always worked for me. Took me sometime to get used to being fully transparent and authentic on my blog and let the fear of being judged or unaccepted go, but once I did that everything was transformed.

These are definitely some good points here James. I like the idea of using polls I really do. I use polls in forums because they have a much broader audience than my blog has.
Comparing people in posts is also interesting. But what you can also do is to look at the whole picture and trying to identify patterns. What do most successful blogs have? By answering several different questions you will get a nice view of what you have to do to maybe get the same kind of exposure they do.
