Joshua

If you are at all like me, then you know some of the pains that are possible when trying to start your own small business.  Everything, I mean EVERYTHING seems to stand in the way of your success at one time or another.

There is one thing that all successful infopreneurs and small business owners have in common. It’s one thing that you MUST master before you can get from where you are now to where you want to be.

…but we will get to that in a minute.

Here are some things that keep entrepreneurs from reaching their goals:

  • Relatives or loved 0nes that think you are chasing a pipe dream.
  • Lack of sales or lack of customers.
  • Naysayers in your product or industry niche that think what you are trying to accomplish can’t be done.
  • Not being able to get started.
  • Your goal will be HARD to accomplish.
  • Not willing to make certain sacrifices to achieve what you really want.
  • Getting STUCK on a certain part of your business development.

The list goes on and on.  However, there is one thing that will keep  you going during these really hard times and one thing that will allow you to get anything that you really want.

That thing is PERSISTENCE.

Persistence is the almost-magical trait that all successful entrepreneurs and small business owners have in common. It is the one thing that keeps pushing you forward when it looks like your idea won’t work in the short-while.

Failure and roadblocks can’t hold a candle to persistence, once the user has mastered it.

Sure, you might have a whole bunch of ideas that turn out to be complete failures, but persistence keeps you going to find the ONE idea that brings you success.

Sure, your original business plan may have NOTHING do with the route that you end up taking, but it’s persistence that grabs you by the hand and keeps pulling until you find the route that you were meant to follow.

You see, money and ideas like speed. Money and ideas only seem to stick with people that are willing to go to great lengths to deserve the outcome that these things can bring. It’s like a rite of passage that each entrepreneur needs to go through, a real test of willpower.

Here are a few tips that can help you develop your persistence:

1. When you hit a roadblock or huge setback, welcome it. This might sound a little crazy but think of it as the price of admission for success. If you have not yet hit your roadblock, then you are not pushing yourself enough.

2. When you feel like giving up, know that this has happened to EVERY successful person in history. This is the time when you are being tested for how serious you are about your idea. If you can slowly push through the setback then your persistence is showing through.

3. If you feel like your idea just won’t work and you want to give up, look inside. Is this inforpreneurial idea something that you are REALLY passionate about, or something that just seemed like a cool idea. You have to eat, sleep, and breathe this thing is you really want to be a rock star with your idea. Maybe it’s a sign that you need to take a different direction instead of giving up.

4. Fight no matter what. When a person that is close to you does not believe in you it can be very hard. This is the time to keep going. This is the time to fight for your success. When your product or service seems to be a dismal failure, even though you KNOW deep inside that it will work, this is the time to fight.

5. Develop a sense of humor about the whole thing. Remember that you are not going to die if you have a few setbacks. Remember that you MUST go through this to get to the other side. Remember that if you can see the humor in the situation, no matter how dark it can get, you can help pull yourself out of the hole.

6. Remember that you don’t have to do it alone. Network with other like-minded people. Swap ideas. Swap failure stories and explain how you coped with each situation. We are ALL going through it, so you might as well band together and punch through to the other side.

Persistence is the key. It is the one thing that you can do to make sure that you will succeed no matter what the universe decides to throw at your small business.

What are some things that you have encountered when trying to develop your own infopreneurial business? What did you encounter that was a true test of your persistence, between making it and throwing in the towel?

I’d love to hear about it.

Draw your own Door of Opportunity

Kiesha

Just this passed weekend, I was watching Beetle Juice for probably like the 50th time since its release in 1988.  Yet, this last time I watched it with new eyes, more mature eyes perhaps, and it really got me thinking – not about death, but about opportunity.

There’s a part in the movie when in order to get the help they needed, the recently deceased couple had to take a piece of chalk and draw a door. It seemed stupid to them, how could something like this work? The deceased woman really doubted – to the point where she really didn’t even want to bother, but her husband had just enough hope to try it anyway.

He drew the door, knocked three times, and it opened…

Most people are like the woman, they think they’ve got things so figured out that they can’t even bother with even attempting the impossible.  How many opportunities are missed because of this attitude?

Are you so convinced by impossibilities that you aren’t even willing to challenge things?  Would you have taken a chance and drew the door or would you have just continued to wallow in misery instead of taking action?  What’s the worse that could happen?

The door might not open, you might say.  But so what! You’d still be no worse off than before.

But what if it does work?  Oh the possibilities!

Believe it or not, many opportunities are just waiting for you – if only you’d take action and stop waiting for things to start “looking possible.”

What if Edison waited for it to “look possible” to create a light bulb?  He failed many times before finally getting it right – what if he simply settled for “it’s not gonna work”?  Where would we all be?  Still burning down our homes with over-tuned candles and kerosene lamps?

You are already have all the keys you need, so pick up that chalk, draw your own door of opportunity, then pick up your keys and open it!

Your Gifts and Talents -

these are the keys of special abilities that only you can do. If you don’t make use of your talents, no one else can.  That also means if you don’t do it, you’re cheating the world of the wonderful contributions that only you can make.

Your Knowledge -

this is the key of what you know – you have a wealth of knowledge that you’ve been collecting since you were born. Put it to use, you’d be surprised to discover that there are people who lack areas that you have.

Your Skills -

these are the keys of what you know how to do as a result of your experience. Combine these with your gifts/talents and knowledge and you’ve got a dangerous weapon against the impossible.

Your Personality -

the key of uniqueness.  Rely on this to help you stand out from the crowd.

Your Heart -

the key of passion and interest.  Let these guide your actions and you’ll never feel like you’re working.

Your Foot -

this is the master key.  Sometimes you have to just kick the door in and stop waiting for others to open it for you!

So there you have it! Don’t just wish in one hand and poo in the other to see what you’ll get first – make a plan and start working at creating your own opportunity.  It’s not as impossible as you think.

Can you remember a time when you had a chance to pick up the chalk and draw a door, but instead allowed doubt to cheat you of your opportunity?  Are you regretting it yet?  What are you going to do about it?

There are more than 24hrs in a day!

I’m not a religious nut about to start talking about some doomsday cult or how we’ve been given extra hours to worship the Lord of Zog. This post is all about learning to manage your time better, and prove you have got more than enough time to build a successful site, I’ll break it down;

  • TV

Watching the newest episode of FlashForward, or catching up on your hidden pleasure soap opera, will destroy your development. Think about it right now, If you spend any amount of time watching TV that you could be working on your site then you need your head seeing too. Think about it, if you get in from work at 6 and have something to eat, maybe put the kids to bed, talk to your partner about the day you’ve had, its going to be about 8pm. So what are you doing for the next few hours?… If the answer makes you feel guilty, stop it right now.  Get your site done first, do that new post, update that new page and promote the hell out of it!

  • Surfing Net

Browsing Ebay for the newest digital camera, Searching YouTube for the sneezing panda, or updating your iPod and before you know it you’ve wasted an hour, that you could have been spent cracking the first chapter of your eBook, By all means escape from it all, but get a grip of your aimless surfing, and make a success of yourself.

  • Do it today, tomorrow will never happen

This is an age old saying but it is so relevant. Why are you waiting till tomorrow, There is no reason for it. Get it done today then you can get even more done tomorrow, and the things you can get done tomorrow, do them now, no one said having a successful website is easy, Its not easy, and takes a huge amount of dedication and passion, but the battle is won if you don’t keep putting it off and get it sorted right now!

  • Aimless Social

By all means check your email, comment on the latest picture of your friend on facebook, but either do this on your lunch break on your phone, or get it all done in ten minutes, I’m being serious here, set a timer for ten minutes and get all your social eLife (I like that term, I should TM it!) done and dusted in that time and that time only. You need to spend time on social networks but for the purpose of promoting your website, not to catch up on the gossip.

24

  • Day dreaming

I put this in here, because I dream a lot, but I recently found myself thinking what the hell am I doing? Why am I dreaming about my plans, and not implementing them. That said day dreaming can be a good thing to do, but do it in the car, start talking out loud pretending its a year in the future and how successful your site has become, talk about how many visitors you get, how your changing peoples lives, how much money your making a month and more importantly how your spending that money. Positive thinking is the key to success.

  • To do list

Write it down! At work make an ‘To Do List’ , or do it in the morning with things you need to do today, and tick them off as you go, for instance; 1; Reply to all tweets and emails (Website related), 2; Write new post, 3; Promote post on social media, 4; Work on future plans for site – Get it in written order of what to do, and tick it off when you have done it. Having a written list makes it harder to ignore.

How I got into the top 2% in 14 days!

This post will hopefully outline the importance of good content, This site is new, and while I am not new to running websites, I’m relatively new to this style of site. To take you back to the first sentence of this post, importance of good content is everything, but by reading this it will hopefully illustrate that absolutely anyone can make it online, no matter how crowded you think the market place is, let me explain;

My first post was on the 26th October 2009, and for the first 4 days I got between 37-91 hits a day, which for a site with zero paid advertising and new to the market is quite respectable. My aim at this point was to build quality content and a loyal fan base, over the course of a year, and at the end of that year I wanted to be in the top 10% of all websites, effectively ranked higher than 1,000,000 by Alexa.

Now this is were I start to get quite excited so please stick with me, on the 31st of October my hits went up to 169, fantastic I thought, great progress, I’m going to beat that tomorrow, and I did, 266 and so on, My best day so far was 828 on the 6th of November. OK but so what, you know sites that are doing 100,000 hits a day ! So do I but this site is mine, its 14 days old, and people are coming to read what I write and that’s exciting stuff!

So where do I rank at the moment? Well Alexa.com has me at

  • 3 Month Average; 1,373,169 (Bear in mind the site is at the time of writing 14 days old)
  • 1 Month Average; 608,749 (My Goal for next year was top 1Million)
  • 7 Day Average; 199,030

Just look at my 7 day average, If I continue to grow the traffic I am at the rate I am, The site will be amongst the top 2%  in the world!

CampaignPoster

What Contributed to this;

  • Social Media

DIGG, Twitter, FriendFeed, FaceBook – Everytime I publish a new post, I share it immediately, and the post receives instant hits

  • Valuable Content

I write about things I want to talk about, just take a lot at the other posts I’ve done, Warning, Don’t Use Auto Tweets , Top 20 Most Influential Blogs and others are things I’m passionate about, and want other people to be too, and lucky for me, you are, majority of my posts have great comments, and have been re-tweeted, which leads me onto the next bullet point.

  • Re-Tweets

Re-tweets by your readers can transform your site’s traffic ranking, for example I can re-tweet a link, and it will probably be clicked by around 30-50 people depending on the title, but get it re-tweeted by someone who has tens of thousands of followers and your talking serious traffic and unique visitors!

So, where am I going with this post… Again I wanted to talk about it so here it is, but that said if your starting out with your own site, or just having a slump in traffic, or just remember your traffic when you first started out, then hopefully this post will serve its purpose of motivation and inspiration, to look at your traffic and become scarily obsessed with it, so obsessed you have to beat yesterdays traffic, you have to produce content that your readers need and want more of.

I treat it like a snowball, build on your momentum and keep building, your trying to create an avalanche with your traffic, so that it becomes an unstoppable force of nature.

Motivate not Alienate

A very quick post to talk about the importance of motivating your readers and followers, but don’t alienate them. I write as I speak, very simple, honest and without upsetting anyone (hopefully). Motivation is key to everything you do, If you motivate others and you yourself are motivated, then you will attract positive motivated people.

But

If you talk down to people, treat your readers like they are dumb (which there not, because they have come to read what your saying) then your going to take a nose dive extremely quickly and you may not recover. Alienating people can be quite easy if you write when your not in the right frame of mind. We all have bad days, but if you are having a rough time, chance are its not a good time to post.

Ways of Motivating

  • Success stories with an unlikely result. Richard Branson for example went bankrupt three times before he made it, Simon Cowell lost everything when he was 31 years old, now look at him
  • Personal stories, negative or positive, talk about how you overcame it or what you have learnt
  • Extraordinary stories of courage and strength, doesn’t have to be related to the internet, choose a soldiers story from Afghanistan for example.

motivate

By motivating people, they are more than likely to come back to keep in that frame of mind, they like the way they feel whilst on your site, so keep them happy and they will come back.

The Importance of Pen and Paper

Writers block is something all InfoPreneurs/Bloggers go through, I would imagine Barack Obama’s speech writer Jon Favreau suffers from it every now and again. I’m not a literal genius, A hell of a lot of work goes into these posts and I suffer with writers block quite a lot, but instead of typing up some drivel I am not passionate about just to get a new post up, I get my pen and paper and scrawl down ideas;

So what did I come up with for post ideas?

What we can learn from Ronin;

Making references to the film Ronin, with Robert De-Nero. My all time favourite film, but more specifically talking about the fact that they were master-less and went on to create their own destiny

How to write an eBook;

I have been researching this myself of late prior to launching a series of training aids next year, so it would make sense to talk about it.

How to capitalize on traffic spikes;

Again having recent traffic spikes on the site, I have been playing around with different ways of building on it.

Dealing with traffic flat spots;

Again any new site has flat spots, as much as you want to you can’t always beat yesterdays visitors, but their is a way to deal with it.

Why use thesis;

Its the template I use with wordpress but I struggled for a long time with other platforms.

If you had $500 to spend on your site, how would you spend it?

A good question and will hopefully generate a lot of interest, and one that I will write about later today.

Dealing with negative comments;

We all get them, and we take it personally, here’s how to turn it into a positive.

Is there an alternative to WordPress?

I have used a lot of different platforms but some people feel forced to use wordpress, There are alternatives out there.

post ideas1

So from having a complete meltdown about what I was going to write about today, I’ve got 9 post title ideas which will keep me going for the next week and it only took, 2-3 minutes of sitting down with a pen and write the first thing that comes into my tiny little brain!
How do you cope with writers block?

Run BEFORE You Walk!

The old saying of don’t run before you walk is probably one of the most common saying around. Everyone has heard of it and probably been instructed by it at some point in their life. Well theInfoPreneur thinks differently. I say ‘ Run before you walk’

If you have read my ‘About’ me page, you will know that I have ran several start up internet business’, some have failed, but the majority have been a great success, and I put that down to my initial statement, running straight into it!

When I set TheInfoPreneur site up I didn’t know how I was going to approach, Where I was going to take it, or where I wanted to end up. That said the best way for me to learn is by jumping in with both feet and finding out from there. I am of the opinion if you walk, its quicker for you to come to a stand still, and more importantly easy for someone to overtake you.

I’m a keen Ultra-Marathon runner, I run at near full pace to build muscular endurance and heart rate threshold, I couldn’t run the times or miles I do if I bimble around or walked up and down the hills! ‘Train Hard, Fight Easy’

Granted by going at it all guns blazing, your going to make mistakes, but those mistakes come early on, because your running not walking. And by tackling those hurdles nice and early you get where you want to be a lot quicker!

  • Imagine you have never been on a roller coaster, and not on e of those wooden framed up and over jobs, a real ten looper that pulls 3G’s in the corners. Now you could start off by going on a ferris wheel, then onto a ghost train, from there maybe try a pirate ship then tackle a log flume before finally building enough courage to go for the big one, But why would you waste your time? Do the big ten looper first and then go on all the other rides having the confidence that you will conquer it.
