Living Your Passions and the “Anti-Finally Friday” Mentality

Today, Hundreds of Millions of people across the globe will be going to work.  Most will have smiles on their faces and are going to be so happy that the weekend is finally upon us.  Believe me, there is absolutely nothing wrong with that feeling.  It is so comforting to know we are about to spend some great times with our families, maybe have a cook-out, do some yard work, or just hang out and chill.

That is what weekends were made for.  Unless.

Unless you are driven to leave your job and seek an alternative way to make an income that can replace your current wages, which will eventually enable you to spend as much time as you want with your family, WHEREVER you want.

  • Sunday Night/Monday Morning Blues – The Ritual

It is always nice celebrating those moments starting Friday morning as soon as you wake up.  Excitement is in the air.    Anticipation fills the day and all of your coworkers just seem to be in better moods, don’t they ?? (Friday’s is always the day I chose to have tough conversations with coworkers, or ask for more money.)

But alas, all good things must come to an end, and as surely as Friday was a joyous moment, Sunday night’s turn into utter depression.  The pit that fills your stomach knowing you are going to a job you hate, working with people you can’t stand, and reporting directly to a lunatic, who you know should not be qualified to even be in charge of their own person.  Yet, here they are, telling YOU what to do.  (What skills do they have that are better than you?  I can’t even believe they are making more money than you)

  • Finally Friday – Time to Relax.  (Lose out on productive, life changing time.)

Make this week different.  Typically, people tend to let their “productivity” guards down on Fridays and Saturdays.  There are so many other cool and fun things to do.  Monday is soooo far distant.  Work?  Who cares about work?

But as surely as the tide rolls in daily, Monday comes, oftentimes sooner, rather than later, and that Empty feeling in your stomach hits.  You may even reflect back and think to yourself…MAN, I should have focused on this and this instead.

And somehow, someway, the ritual of your life continues on each week.  Oftentimes, it is simply empty hopes and grandiose dreams, but they lack real action oriented tasks to complete them.

  • Better Choice – Fight like there is no tomorrow.

If you want to change something, only you can do it.  Your momma cannot do it.  Your daddy can’t do it.  Your boss can’t and I can’t.  I can help you by telling you what is working for me and sharing my experiences, but I can’t force you to do one of the myriad of tasks that need to be done if you are going to successfully use information to be your business.

Make this weekend different.  I know.  You may have a wedding, you may be going out on the town.  You may have a funeral.  I don’t know.  Every single one of us is going to have a daily challenge of some type that we must cope with.  Some challenges are greater than others.  Ok.  So, what?

Stop making excuses, and start producing results.  6AM Friday is only 72 hours from 6AM Monday.  If you sleep 8 hours each night…that gives you 48 hours.  MAKE SOMETHING HAPPEN.

    • Thanks Matthew.

Now, just so you understand…I don’t do the weekly grind anymore…I’m “semi” out of the rat race. I just remember “vividly” how it felt and what it is like, and it is without any doubt, THE absolute biggest reason that I push myself so hard. I’m never wanting to go back if I don’t have to.

  2. Hey James,
Good talk here. Under normal, i don’t think we deserve holidays or weekends. Even the bible tells us – God rested on the 7th day. I don’t think he would have rested if he didn’t finish what He had to do.
We turn to relax when we haven’t yet finished our task. We should be able to give an account for every minute we spend.

    • Innocent Crisis,
Don’t get me wrong, I really don’t do any “work” on sundays either. I spend all morning at church and get home around 1:00. I may answer some comments, and get posts ready for Monday, but the majority of my stuff for Sunday was completed on Saturday. ;)

I’m more wanting people to not get comfortable with the notion of …ahhh Friday is here…time to relax all weekend and I’ll pursue my dreams and visions next week. It is all to easy to do, and then Monday hits hard and heavy.

      Brandon

Thank you for your comment. I appreciate it.

  3. Absolutely right Brandon :) . !! Great Post.

  4. You are correct.

If you don’t take action yourself, no one can change your life.

After reading this article, It makes me thankful for having a web based business, as I do not have to follow the routine that you mentioned.

I can work at my own timings, when I am the most productive.

I can choose on how fast or how slow to grow.

    • Nabeel,
ABSOLUTELY. I think it is one of the most awesome “businesses” anyone can start is something online. Low overhead, infinite income potential, and the future has just begun. We’ve only seen the infancy.

  6. Although I’m not a Friday celebrator – because for the weekend only brings more work – I know that Sunday night depression – all too well. But I’m fighting – okay some days I’m too beat down to move – but little by little I’m getting there. Thanks for this wake-up call – it was much needed.

    • Hey Kiesha,
I remember the Sunday night blues all too well. They are etched in my body and do not bring back happy feelings.
I figure James kicked you guys in the pants like…every day. I need to get one in at least every other day. ;)

Geez, now I’m traumatized by the memory of the Sunday night depression. I still have friends in that 9-5 lifestyle and it’s like they put their life on hold until the weekend rolls around. I’d still be in that trap if I didn’t realize a bunch of worthless crap wasn’t worth giving up my life for. I scaled back my possessions and got a bigger life as a result.

That’s funny! I was just reviewing my life plan and trying to figure out what my passion is in life. Seems that I have lost focus or gotten off track. Next week I begin a journey to find my passion and to turn it into a job I love.

Not sure what I’ll find or how I will accomplish it, but I am excited for the adventure. I will more than likely blog about it too….:)

    • Cool Ms. Freeman, or should we say Mystery Woman? ;)

I’ve been having the same life thoughts…thanks to seanogle.com’s website. I’ve even started my bucket list. :0

    Brandon,

You couldn’t have said this any better… Well, perhaps you could, but I like how you said it here anyway. We all have things happening in our lives and we all have the same time as others so what’s really stopping us? Us.

It’s simple and yet overlooked simply because we make excuses. If we’re happy with how things are, great. If not, we can absolutely do something about it. We have to because no one else will.

    I love Fridays btw… But who doesn’t?

      Glad you enjoyed.

  10. This is fair enough but you still cannot beat Fridays! Whatever you are doing, passion or not, there will be parts of your work that is tedious…

    • Hey Jorgen, I completely agree, I love Friday’s also. And, I’m not saying everyone to only slave away all weekend. I’m really driving home the “I’ll work on pursuing my dreams over the weekend”…and then not making it happen at all…and then being back at the same starting point on Monday morning. It’s a vicious cycle.

  11. Karen says:

This was me! I woke up this morning so glad that it was Friday. Only 8 hours to go until quitting time and I could do what I wanted.

Now, you’ve given me the extra motivation to not waste this weekend and to get some things done that I’ve been putting off. As you say, there’s 48 hours that I can use to really make a difference.

Thanks for the kick in the butt!

  12. Hi Brandon,

Awesome post. This is exactly the kick in the pants kind of post I love. You’re totally right on this.

Weekends and nights are all times that I could spend on my blog. That is if I’m really serious about living the life of my dreams.

Let’s face it, over the next few weeks, I’ll be losing sleep watching the World Cup, the Tour de France and Wimbledon anyhow. So, I could do the same for my blog if I wanted to. It’s all about choices. :)

    • Hey Jazz,
AWESOME honesty right there! I’m glad it gave you a boost. It’s ok, to take breaks. As soon as the Steelers start playing, I’ll be using 3 hours per week for that, but the bottom line as long as you are getting the results you want and achieving your goals…it’s all good.

  13. Gines says:

    A wake up call indeed!

Well, I don’t really experience the Friday morning excitement or the Sunday night, Monday morning ritual. Not anymore. Not in the last 3 years.

I’m don’t work 9am to 5pm nor Monday to Friday. That’s the joy (?) of working in the health care sector. So, obviously, I’m still competing with the rats.

“…reporting directly to a lunatic, who you know should not be qualified to even be in charge of their own person.”

    Exactly right!

“Unless you are driven to leave your job and seek an alternative way to make an income that can replace your current wages…”

That’s the ultimate goal. Time to start your own race.

    Have a good one B.

It is truly rewarding and cool to not have to experience the wide range of feelings one feels doing the grind for “the man”. However, I can definitely remember the feelings, and like I had mentioned somewhere else…it’s a major source of the fuel that keeps us going.

  14. Julius says:

Though I work at home, I also have the feeling during Fridays which you described. I try to beat the Sunday blues by finding ways to make my Mondays more interesting. This can be a new idea to write about or things I’ve learned over the weekend that I can apply to my work.
