If there is one thing that drives me crazy, is listening to people tell you something, and you know in your heart they have never done it before. You know the thought running through your head… they are full of crap. They don’t know their metrics. They really don’t KNOW. They THINK, but they don’t have any data to compare anything to.

Very interesting. I use a similar kind of ebook style give away but the book is on the right side of the blog and I have experimented with different headlines. I am really intrigued to move it over to the right side of the page (top right) to see if that makes a difference.

It would be interesting, in my spare time, to try moving the signup form from right to left sides, chang wording, etc and split testing it out.

Your point is well taken! I have recently produced a FREE ebook to help build my list (based around the excellent teachings of the Internet Summit – which yu know about.)
The thing it, you came to my site to find that product – and didn’t find it! You’re the second person to tell me this, so something is up.
Basically I have the product set up as a download from an optin on the right-hand side of my blog, in the sidebar. Before that, I had it in a sticky post.
I am getting on average 2 signups per day from this (excellent as this is my first real list outside of family!)
Maybe I need to ‘split test’ where I put the optin, sizes etc.
If you do pop back to my blog, can you check it out and give your honest feedback?

Jaycee, actually…i heard about it from Sally’s blog, but maybe the book hadn’t been available at the time. I don’t remember seeing a hyperlink in her post.
I just hopped back over to your blog and I think it looks great and is located well.
Remember…you wanted honest feedback…that’s what I’m here for…
I find the text “hey there” too light blue, and I’m not crazy about the all lowercase letters. I think the graphic is excellent. I think the signup box itself may be hard to read with the black chain, etc.
It may be one of those things were simple converts better. Good thing with aweber is it’s stats tracking.
Maybe try this for 1 week. Try another for 1 week. Take the better converter…change something, etc. Keep improving it.
PS…everyone…it’s a good guide. Good stuff.

Glad to see the growth taking place, Brandon. It’s inspiring! I haven’t focused on list building but will be doing that down the line. Right now though, I’ve been fortunate that a fair number of folks just sign up for the newsletter on their own without further incentive or any prompting. Now, maybe I should actually be more intentional about writing that newsletter!

John, intrusive newsletter signup devices work really well. I’ll be putting one on my site again soon. Not quite ready yet.
I had a footer popup for while, I took it off because the styling conflicted with Thesis CSS. But it converted pretty well, better than my sidebar or madlib is doing. And those conversions add up.

This is such a great tip. Moving locations for free things and signup boxes can be part art and part science. I will have to admit that I have not done much testing with this placement personally, but it looks like you found the sweet spot.
Now, everyone will probably copy you, but at least you have your giveaways in front of everyone’s face, right when they get to the end of the post.

Wow, that’s interesting. Thanks for sharing with me and the others. My wife is pretty good at signing and my kids have taken it to it pretty well also. Mostly via singing songs, etc.
It’s pretty unique that the internet is an online place where you get to participate and profit, etc while not having to be able to hear. That’s really neat.
It also gives me perspective into realizing that when I make videos, it is important to also include a summary of what the video is about, as I now know there are deaf readers who may want to take away some of the information from the video.
I guess it is one of those things that hadn’t even really crossed my eye…and when I saw that email address…just had to ask.
It does indeed give me some insights. Thanks again for sharing.
