Try using the Dagon Design Sitemap generator for the archives page. It displays a list of all posts you have (only the titles, no excerpt) on one or more pages (depending on how you configure it). I find that layout better for searching old posts, and it is especially useful when you have hundreds of them (the reader doesn’t need to navigate through a lot of links and pages).
Maybe you could integrate it for a while and create a poll to ask your visitors which Archives navigation is better. I’m sure a lot of people would find that information useful .

No plugins need just in your WP dashboard, add new page then edit the settings and there you have it!
