Why Become An Entrepreneur? – Guest Post

by theinfopreneur on March 7, 2010

This is a guest post from Alex Monroe over at GetYourBizSavvy.com, it’s the first part of a series of articles finding out the story behind why people want to become entrepreneurs Alex over to you;

Growing up, life was pretty good. I did not get everything I wanted, which was a good thing, but I got a majority of the things I asked for. Looking back, I feel like somewhat of a jerk the way I asked for things and always wanted something. As I grew older though, I began to understand the concepts of money and how money related to my parents.

Money among other things I am sure tore my parents apart. Not having enough money and struggling is something my parents had to deal with and still deal with to this day. My mother and father currently work two jobs. They bust their ass to pay the mortgage, bills and lots more. Every day I think about them. I can’t stand to think about the fact that they have to work so damn much to get back so little in return. Two of the most wonderful people in the World that deserve everything only get a small fraction of what they really deserve.

All I want is for my parents to live happily again, to forget about the worries that money creates. I want them to enjoy life and not have to spend each day working 12 plus hours. I asked myself the question of what it will take for them to be able to live a better lifestyle, a lifestyle they deserve. The answer was through my help.

I am determined to help my parents live the life they ought to have. The only way I saw myself being able to this was through entrepreneurship. It was pretty obvious to me that I did not want to work for someone, but instead do something I loved. I also knew that doing so could make me a lot of money in the process.

Part of the first $100,000 I make will be used for a down payment on a new house for my parents.

This story is a big part of the reason why I wanted to be an entrepreneur. I want to decide my future and not let a paycheck do it for me. I want to be in charge of whether I work tomorrow or not. If I have to spend twelve plus hours working, it better be on something that I love doing. It better be for the good of my entrepreneurial journey and not some job. When I think of being an entrepreneur, I think of freedom. I think of the opportunities. Too many times did I see my hard working parents get laid off and on the search for another job. This vicious cycle is something I will never be a part of.

Being rich like Bill Gates is not what I am looking for, but instead I want to be able to provide for myself and my family without the blink of an eye. I want to pursue opportunities without thinking about the cost associated with it. Being an entrepreneur is the way I see this possible.

Great article ! Ive always loved Alex’s style of writing. Why I choose this route was same as you. To repay my parents for all theyve done and securing my future.

Martin,

It’s great to see a fellow entrepreneur like yourself Martin. Parents can be a great motivator. They encourage me every step of the way.

My motivations are slightly different but come from the same place. Instead of only my parents it’s my brother, and the man I love too. Not made it yet but I will someday, can count on that one. :)

Hey Heather,

You will make it Heather. Having the mindset and going for it is what it’s all about. What has always interested me is what has made us desire this lifestyle. I’m so passionate about it and don’t see any other path for myself.

Thanks Alex. :)

I think that this sort of lifestyle takes a certain type of person… a lot of people I know seem content to just go ahead and work for someone else, get paid, and that’s it. Quite apart from anything else I think I’d get bored!

Your absolutely right Heather. One of my really good friends has a very popular blog and he enjoys doing it. He could even make an income out of it. Instead of thinking of doing that though, he desires working in an office and reporting to a boss. I respect everyone’s decisions, but it is hard for me to even think like that. Because, like you said too, I would get soooo bored!

I’ll admit I can see the appeal if I sort of squint and tilt my head a little… but that would only be for the sort of work I’d be going into after graduating (3D, it’s a different animal). Already had to work while studying and I’ve come to the conclusion that there has to be better things out there.

Can’t wait til the start of next month though; monetizing plans begin then.

What a noble cause. For me it would be to be my own boss and decide where I take it, if I happen to get enough money to support relatives..That’d be great, but we’ll have to wait and see how that turns out :)

Experimently,

Being your own boss is one of the greatest privileges in the world. And where you decide to take it will be anywhere. And set your mind on what you want in regards to everything including money. Only you decide how much you will make or how far you go. Good luck on your journey my friend.

Definitely a great heart felt story. It is amazing how powerful of a motivator your parents can be. I have a little bit of a different angle, my parents are entrepreneurs. They have started, ran, sold, and started anew, various businesses over the past 30 years. I have seen them win big, lose big, but always pick up the pieces and go at it again. And they have not worked a 9-5 for the last 30 years. They are my inspiration!

DJ Wetzel,

That is awesome! I love hearing a story like this. You are at a great advantage having your parents as entrepreneurs. Definitely a wonderful thing my friend. That pumps me up hearing that, especially the fact that they have struggled and succeeded. I’m sure you can and already have learned a lot from them. I can’t wait to one day help my future children on their entrepreneurial journeys (a long time from now).

That’s a great story, Alex. I think a lot of us can relate to wanting the best for our parents and doing all that we can to ensure that they are happy and don’t have to worry needlessly about money.

It sounds as if you have what it takes to make it successfully. Great to learn more about you. Thanks for sharing.

Karen,

Thank you for you kind words. It is definitely something that I have the utmost passion for. James talks a lot about determination and the way he writes and talks about being an entrepreneur is something I can really relate to.

I know we can all make it and we all have what it takes. We just need to have the right formula to take us through the journey. Thanks for your comment Karen.

This is a wonderful story and I can feel your inspiration and drive as I read through it.

You have your mind set to do this so that you can provide better opportunities for your family without having to worry about getting up and going to work in the morning unless you so choose. That’s where it’s at man. You have to get out there and figure out what you can do to make that happen, and you can make that happen.

Some people just never get it and that’s a shame. Some do and that’s awesome. It sounds like you’re one who truly gets it and you should definitely go for it.

I’m learning about investing and want to also learn about business so that I am more free for my family and for what I want to do in this life of mine.

Great post man. Keep up the good work.

Hey Alex,

Thanks. I appreciate that. Yes it takes a lot to get what you want but if what you want is worth it then shouldn’t be a problem.

Rock on!

Nice post. You are an inspiration to all aspiring entrepreneurs including myself. I too hope to grow my new business venture to the point where my mother doesn’t have to worry about going to work. I like that you say that you’re not looking to be as rich as Bill Gates and neither am I. Bill Gates and guys of his stature are a rarity. It’s much easier to build something that is small and sustainable than it is to build something that may bring you megabucks. You seem to have the appropriate mindset and attitude and I’m confident you are going to reach your goals. I’ve been working for others for 7 years now and i’m finally bored and ready to translate that experience into my own venture.

Greg,

Really appreciate the kind words man. I’m glad this post hit home for you. I brought up Bill Gates because its not about the money. Too often people think about the money and that sets up failure most of the time. When you only think about the money you forget about those other important things like what you can really be doing with it.

I am pumped to hear you’re becoming an entrepreneur. Keep pushing and you’ll get what you desire man. Thanks for the comment!

Great to see we have some of our motivation in common. Of course a lot of other things tie into it, but the parents are a big help. Thanks for the comment!

I can’t agree with you more,

to hell with working for someone else. That wasn’t cool in the last century and won’t be in the next one.

You can never win a game that has been invented by somebody else.
Play by your own rules and do something great.
Heck, if you’re maverick and doing creative business online, you might as well illuminate the world along the journey.

Start your own “company”, then you can have control of your own destiny. It makes you number one from the start.

Nicely said Mars. Being number one is what makes being an entrepreneur so fascinating. In the work place people are fighting t be number one for their boss, supervisor, manager. When you’re an entrepreneur you’re always number one. Thanks for the comment dude.

Great post Alex,
Never give up on your dream and you will make it happen. i love the part about working 12 hours a day but doing what you love. One of my favorite quotes is from Jim Roan” Who’s dream did you build today?” I spent 22 years building someone else’s dream, it is great that you learned this lesson at an early age. Stay focused, take action

That is a perfect quote man. I definitely will keep my focus and action in the right direction. 22 years huh? That’s great though. You got yourself a ton of experience and a lot of lessons learned. I am sure you can use those as an entrepreneur. Thanks for the comment my friend.

Hi Alex, great post thanks for sharing. I think, for me anyway, that being an entrepeneur is about building something. It’s not necessarily about wealth, although most people use that as a measure of success, it’s about building something sustainable, challenging and rewarding.
