This is a guest post from Eric, I’ll let him do the introductions;
Hey, I’m Eric Heavilin from BluePop13.com. There I write about my life experiences and mix a bit of success and some blogging ventures into the stories. Catch me on Twitter and follow me if you like @bluepop13. I haven’t guest posted on here for a while so I thought it was about time to again so here goes… Enjoy!
Nothing Is Perfect So Quit Trying… Huh?
This isn’t EXACLTY as it sounds but the title still catches your eye which is exactly what I wanted it to do. Our lives are never going to be perfect and it just hit me as I was approving a comment on my blog from Christine Livingston on my post about if you want success then you need a goal.
I wrote that post because I realised, at least for me, that in order to have success you need to have a goal and actually accomplish that goal. You need to achieve it no matter what. This goes right along with my quote: Success is simple. Success is doing whatever it takes to reach/achieve your goals. Nothing else really matters because it isn’t success. Of course, it is also the ride to getting there that teaches you something but ultimiately getting there means a hell of a lot for when you look back.
- The World Is Round
Life isn’t ever going to be perfect or exactly the way you would like it to be. Why? I have no idea but all I know is that the world isn’t perfect. So how are we all happy and why can we really BE happy if things aren’t ever going to be perfect and we already know this?
Improvement exists… And we’re only human. That’s exactly why. We’re always working harder to make our better selves exist and it’s because we want better and the best for ourselves even though the world is never going to be the best it could possibly be.
Gravity exists and it’s a good thing because the world is round and therefore we’re always up AND down when you look at it that way.
- We’re Human
I really feel this should be said in this section of my post: NEVER just quit trying for something you really feel you should have but understand that you should only quit when you feel things have to be perfect and you can make everything the best. It’s never going to happen, I don’t think. It can always be better, always. That’s exactly why better exists, because of best. We’re always going to make some kind of mistake and be learning from that so understand that you can ALWAYS do better and nothing is EVER going to be perfect and that’s exactly why.
Allow improvement.
- Colors Are Real
I often wonder why colors are what they are. Let me explain. Why is red, red? Why is blue, blue? What makes those colors what color they are? Seriously. I wonder this sometimes and just think, who said pink is pink and not brown and why is it pink and why the name and all sorts of crazy things. We may never know this but it’s fun to think about and understand that colors just are and they are amazing. No I’m not crazy but I think it’s fun to think about this stuff. Again, think about how colors effect you each day and understand that even they aren’t pefect but it doesn’t matter because they’re just plain cool!
- Do Numbers Mean Anything?
This is a bit of a teaser really. Money matters as it helps us live our lives each day. Its’ numbers but it’s also not. How do numbers effect your life? Have you ever counted how many times you use numbers in a day? I bet you’d be surprised, even if you’re not working for some reason. Numbers mean everything and nothing at the same time, in my opinion. You use numbers to get through your day but at the end of the day, what really matters ISN’T the numbers.
- Want It, Need It, Do Something About It
Above all, you have to do this. Want something in your life and then realise you want it badly enough that you feel as though you need it. Then, just do something about it. Sounds simple but far from it. Just make sure you learn as you go and remember to quit thinking it has to all be perfect because the world is never going to be perfect and you CAN’T be perfect simply because there is always going to be better, so THEN keep trying.
So, what does everyone think and feel here? What are you NOT quitting doing or have you already QUIT doing because you realise it’s just not going to be perfect?

hmm I think life can be almost perfect because you have the possibility to make the world “perfect”. What I mean is that you can change the world by changing your own attitude. That means if you are happy and you always try to see the little miracles that happen in this world then your world will definitely be different from the world of others. Others that see the world as a bad place.
Its all in your attitude. Change your attitude, change the world.

Hey Julius,
I like that last line there!
“Its all in your attitude. Change your attitude, change the world.”
I do believe it takes more than attitude to change the world but I understand what you mean. It takes knowing, talking, acting and re-acting in my opinion. Your words sum it up, however.
Everyone sees the world a bit differently which is why we all make it what it is for ourselves. That’s what makes helping each other out and creating great things happens.
I really like your outlook on this.
Thanks for sharing!

I agree Eric. It of course takes more than your attitude to change the world. But looking at the world in a positive way can totally change you.

I guess this is another way of saying (using numbers!) follow the 80/20 rule. ie. 20% of your efforts produce 80% of your results. Focus on the things you can control and reduce the things you can’t.

Matt,
Yes you should be focusing on what gives you the ultimate results for your best efforts. Well, or least efforts.
I have tried the 80/20 rule and find it does work in most situations for me.
Have you and what does it do for you?

My portfolio for university. Going to be finishing it off today, but I’ve been procrastinating so long on it… because it isn’t full of the things I wanted it to be. It’s not full of BAD stuff, but it’s sure as $#%^ not perfect!
Just need to get my head down and work on it really. Great post though Eric, good to see you on here

I have some things I’ve been procrastinating on as well that I should really be sitting down and getting focused on.
It’s always good to have a strong reason why in order to force yourself to just get through it and get it done.
Thanks for the comment and good luck to you!

Eric! nice title and with it you achieved what you wanted. It got my attention (arrived here from twitter).
About being perfect, I am at loss. I somehow like being perfect and its lessens my productivity. Need to change my mindset.

We all need to change something about us at some point in time and none of us are ever going to be perfect. Realising this is what will help us all along the way.
I’m glad you stopped by from Twitter. James kicks ass with keeping up on promoting this site and I’m glad you shared your thoughts here!

Eric,
I absolutely hate quitting something just cause it isn’t gonna be perfect. I know I have in the past, and it doesn’t make me feel that great, because I know I could’ve done a stellar job at it.
So my new policy is not giving up (if it’s not gonna be perfect). Because, like you said, nothing will be perfect. So why stress yourself out more? Why have people miss out on something that could be amazing?

Exactly!
Don’t quit just because you know for a fact it’s not going to turn out as you’d hoped. That’s just it, you have no idea HOW it’s going to turn out so it’s better to go for it, monitor how it DOES turn out and look back and what you did/didn’t do for the results you got.
After all, if you quit, what results do you really have other than blank, empty, nothingness which just shows you didn’t accomplish anything BUT failure after all.

Eric,
A very philosophical post; lots of required for this one. I love the bit about ‘we’re human’. “Only quite if you think it’s not going to be perfect”, I must remember this one.
Thanks for sharing.

Paul,
Nothing we do is ever going to be perfect and we must learn to accept that. Why shouldn’t we? It just means we can ALWAYS do better? Isn’t that what we’re all trying to achieve anyway out of this life of ours, to do better? How can we if we know there’s an end, a perfect point where it’s all just going to be there and nothing else is needed.
Learn that and you’ll live a better life in my opinion.

Eric,
I agree totally with your sentiments. We’re in this life to learn & develop and enjoy the experience. So let’s just do that!

Thanks for the reminder !
I used to be a perfectionist many years ago. I stopped because it’s an useless endeavor. Perfection is for robots, humans have flaws by nature.
Shipping is the important part for me – Kaizen is my golden rule = tiny improvement every single day for the rest of your life.
Way to go !

I love it, Mars!
“Kaizen is my golden rule = tiny improvement every single day for the rest of your life.”
If we keep this in mind that’s all that needs said. More said is always better but this is awesome dude!
Just do a bit each day for the rest of your life and be happy with that simply because each day that comes to use means more opportunity for more life to happen and improvement to be made and failure to be learned from.
Awesome and thanks for sharing!

Eric,
Nothing is ever perfect… but perfect is simply a perception based on expectations (often set unrealistically)…I have a mantra that gets me through life…
“it is what it is”
I use this to take stock, “it is what it is” TODAY, NOW, that does not mean that I cannot make it better tomorrow with some effort, but at the end of tomorrow it will still be “it is what it is”.
At any given moment it is as perfect as it can be at that moment in time based on the effort that has been put into it.

I agree. What is at this point in time is as good as it’s going to get until, in time, we make it better. If we don’t, we have even more time to figure out what we did wrong and then fix it for the next time.
Being perfect is not important. Being the best is not important. Be the ultimate you and enjoying life and striving to always make things worth while is what’s truly important.
Thanks for your comment!

I always try to think of this idea whenever I’m doing something: Just put your heart on what you do and do not be in a rush. When you have done your work, look at it and say, “I tried my best. This may not be perfect for some, but I know that I’ve learned something from this task and it’ll help me improve.”

Julius,
You are so right. That is a great way to look at it. Do your best. Look at what you’ve done with the understanding of the fact that you did do your best and then see how you could improve it for next time.
Great thoughts. Thanks for sharing.
