Clamping The Noise In your Head: Learn From My Mistakes – Guest Post

by theinfopreneur on March 3, 2010

This is a guest post from Moon over at ExperimentsInPassiveIncome.com who is on a journey to realise the dream of travelling the world by earning a passive income, Moon over to you;

When I was young and we lived overseas, I picked up this love of gardening from my grandmother. I’d help her with all these plants including small herbs, tomato vines, carrots. Every now and then, we would cut some cilantro and pluck some tomatos right off the vine for our evening meals. Those were the days!

Then one summer after realizing everyone’s love for mangos, including mine, (too underappreciated in the States here), I went on a mango frenzy. I must have planted upto 60 mango seeds within the span of a few days, a week tops. I didn’t care about my mother’s concerns. Apparently I was indestrutible. What’s that, mom? A heat stroke? Dehydration? Psssh, things that weaklings can be affected by. I sure as hell wasn’t a weakling! On I went, counting along the way how many seeds I had dropped into the soil, gently padded with soil. By the time I was done, even the adults were impressed!

Remarkably, over the next couple of years, a few of those seeds grew into beautiful thick plants and eventually trees. I remember being upset when the goats would get loose and consume great chunks of my mango plants. Some TLC and they’d often recover. It didn’t matter. Over the years, I planted a few more mango trees. A few years ago when mom visited the old house, she told me how two of my mango plants had grown into these beautiful trees still standing there. I remember feeling pride, and now writing about this, nostalgia. The things you do when you’re younger, without much thought, turn out to be some of the best things you’ll ever do.

Why didn’t my younger self do all this “research” before heading on this mango venture? Why wasn’t I scared of how much the returns from my investment would be? Why didn’t I care to find out about pests and pesticides? Why didn’t I research if I should instead grow apples or other fruits that had better chances of surviving?

I didn’t ask anyone about fertilizers, the quality of the soil, how much care and time would go into raising these mango plants, or when they would even yield any fruit.

I took challenges as they came, never becoming bogged down with the details so much that I let go of the ideas before ever implementing it.

As youngsters, we have more passion and less care for details and consequences.

I miss that.

When did I grow up to be this fearful of the actions I take? I’ve become cynical and jaded and at a young age. Why do I spend hours and hours of researching only to finally find out what I “researched” doesn’t really apply to my real world experiments, feeding my disappointments? I know it’s not just me.

The bottom line is, you can earn “passive income” any way you want. Do you love to write? Go write for eHow, Suite101, Associated Content. Do you love to code? You can create web applications and introduce it to hundreds in your first week (Anthony Feint, anyone?). Are you an ideas guy and don’t have the required skills? That’s fine, because you can outsource your project to skilled workers through oDesk, Guru, 99Designs, whatever you fancy. Whatever skills you have, people are willing to pay you for your experienced advice, whether it’s through podcasts, paid forums, dvds, and other mediums.

So much of the noise in your head comes from your own distractions. After all, so many ways to earn money, so many paths to take. Why not pursue them all? Because time is limited, my friends.

People really get bogged down when they think about the consequences and after doing the research become overwhelmed. I interviewed a guy who I am now good friends with who said something similar to what you have said. He has been involved in many successful startups. He has recently got into the restaurant business. He started knowing absolutely nothing about it. He explained to me that when you research something, at the end of the day the negatives outweigh the positives.

I agree and disagree with his statement because I think it’s important to weigh things a little bit. I think its about working hard at it and really pursuing it. Obviously, some things require research but if its something you want and you know you can get it then go for it.

Our minds have a funny way of talking us out of something if it seems like it’s the unknown. Why not go for the promotion? “Well, I’m not sure what the job entails, if I’ll even like it. Besides, mine isn’t so bad.”

When in reality, you’re probably nervous of the interview. This holds true for many ideas I come up with. I miss the view I had as a child; I never saw obsticles.

“He started knowing absolutely nothing about it. He explained to me that when you research something, at the end of the day the negatives outweigh the positives. ” – great statement. Because in my book, that has been my outcome many times; i just stop because the negatives have out weighed the positives. *sigh* Now to get over that. :D

As long as you’re willing to go for it you can do anything you put your mind to and just do it. Don’t let details and little things get in your way. Just do something and feel the excitement. Maybe think of being a kid again when you do it and how you’d feel if you were younger and use that for inspiration.

Either way, be willing and go for it!

Great post here Moon!

Thanks Eric! So many of us fall flat on execution instead of nurturing our ideas. I will be taking my own advice and yours :)

It’s good to just do something. That’s why I sometimes say I’ll do something wrong before I do nothing at all. It can be used in different ways but doing anything, even if it’s not right is better because you’ll learn quicker too.

I was sucked in too, young, old, whatever lady. Don’t know ya but you gave some good suggestions there. I do write for AC and they are without a doubt very professional in all they do…at least that’s my experience… as for some of the others, I’ve heard of one or two but never indulged. A guy can only do so much.. and still work at home.
As for the content you wrote, reminded of the story I recently posted about reminiscing… and a pony, amongst other things. Thanks

Haha Lees, love your comment. I’m 27.5 years old, btw. I’m really tempted to checkout AC as well, but figure I may as well focus on eHow first, see some results before I try anythingi else.

I’ll have to check out your Pony story then!

WOW…to retain the passion of a child for doing…as the old saying goes the best time to plan a tree was twenty years ago, the next best time is now.

The seeds you plant today (both physical and allegorical), could well be providing shade and comfort for others for years to come.

Speaking of seeds, I’d love to get into gardening again. I love what you had to say: “The seeds you plant today (both physical and allegorical), could well be providing shade and comfort for others for years to come.”

Thanks for reading, Mick.

You know Moon, you are right. Passive income is an attainable goal. I want to sell iPhone apps but don’t know the first thing about programming. I can design an app all day but it will never get coded until I hire someone from eLance to do it for me. Forcing your fear to take a back seat and making an active step towards accomplishing your goal or task is critical. “Faith like a child”…..is not a trivial statement. A child’s headlong vigor to accomplish tasks coupled with the wisdom of life lessons we earn as adults is a winning combination!

Moon,

A very inspiring post; the beauty of being young and fearless. No fear of being embarassed about making mistakes. It’s all fun & games and learning. Oh what wonderful days they were; then all of a sudden we grow up (physically at least) and we discover embarassment and a self consciousness. All of a sudden our creativity and passion disappears and in comes the interference.

Thanks for sharing this, I loved the post.

Regards

Paul

Paul, you said it right there, no embarassment of making mistakes. I kind of miss those days, care-free, etc., but hopefully with some work, we can all return to those kind of days.

I enjoyed this post a lot. Its comments had great content too. In my case, apart from fear of the unknown, I tend to overanalyze things to a point where it gets ridiculously complicated. But I think I’ll try doing one of the suggestions made in the comments: do something and feel the excitement.

this post is great! It reminds me of why I started blogging. I used to overthink and over research everything. finally I just jumped in and worked as I went along. Like your trees, just going for it initially and tending along the way are paying of in satisfaction of a job well done.
Thanks for the reminders! I am going to go write for AC now…

Justin, same here. For a year I thought, “how can I do all this research and post 2-3 times a week”, only to now realize that people are interested in progress and your experiences as they are. We’ll never be as ready as we want to be, so just jump in and figure it out as it comes.

Moon, that was an awesome post. I miss that naive passion I once possessed, too.
And you’re right, there is a zillion ways to make passive income. I recently began to think about that and had a lightbulb moment when I realized I am earning passive income on somethings, but I never thought of it that way.
I also began thinking about outsourcing for part of my business idea (i need to get out of my head and make it real). I discussed it with my husband. He didn’t realize that many of your vitamin companies ‘formulas’ are the exact same product bought thru a private label company. That vitamin company can then stick there own label on it and sell it as their own. The same goes for blogging; you can buy Private Label Articles (PLA) and make them your own. I don’t say it’s completely wrong. If a private label has an excellent product and you’re willing to sell it, then more power to you.

Okay, enough rambling. Nice to watch your journey. Now if I could just get off my toosh and start mine! Enough talking, more doing! :D

Christine,

That’s an advantage and a disadvantage. People usually get lost in how to make money online and take up everything in their paths. Luckily for me, I sorted out something just a few days ago and now I”m pretty calm about it (for now that is, haha).

It’s pretty interesting about PLAs and I haven’t really researched them. Oh yes, that whole vitamin thing? I only realized it after reading the 4HWW.

I should re-read that book in another month to keep my focus. Thanks for dropping by, I know it gets hectic!
