This is a guest post from Lis, Lis Sowerbutts uses her self-titled blog to document her attempts to make an online income. She doesn’t make thousands while she sleeps, but she makes more money than when she started online and she hasn’t quit yet!
So you hate your job, want to be home to spend time with family, want the freedom to live on a beach and still earn money while you sleep. Want to blog you way to thousands a month?
Have you got a business plan? Oh you don’t need one because you read somewhere if you blog they will come, yeah good luck with that.
I’ve been in the is game for a couple of years now – I’m more successful than most (i.e. I haven’t quit yet), but less successful than some (my income is not enough to support my partner and I in a first world country, yet).
From what I’ve seen the people who are quickly successful online fall into two camps:
* those that know how to sell: vacuum cleaners, cars, advertising space it doesn’t matter, they are the people who could sell ice to the Eskimos
* those that find a good mentor and do everything they say, without questioning and with the faith that it will work out in the end.
Both those models work (big caveat on the second one – gotta find the right mentor). Unfortunately neither of them worked for me. That is because I believed that not only was I incapable of selling a cold beer to a thirsty man, I didn’t want to. I didn’t feel comfortable selling, I associated salesmen with sharp suits and sharper business practices. And I was a cynic, I believed in nothing and no one – burnt out from my time in the corporate wilderness of well-paid white-collar professionalism, I believed in nothing much – and was far from convinced by own ability to run my own business.
So how did a 40-something, university educated, burnt out professional who is allergic to sales and marketing, not very good with people and has no idea how to run a business, make at least some money online? I learned some stuff (and I’m talking about html or SEO here), I did quite a lot of soul-searching, I went down some dead ends. Here is what I think are the five most importants things I’ve learnt about being in business online.
1. You are in business. You are not building a blog, or playing on the Internet. There are two basic online business models: you promote yourself and your skills to either make money off line (say a book deal or a consulting gig – this is the “blogging model”) or you develop a passive income from selling on sites from auto pilot (“Internet marketing”). Both can work – but for most beginners I think the second option is a lot easier.
2. Making money online is about selling. Either model involves you being paid by you persuading someone to do something. You may be selling your own product (e.g. an e-book) or skills (consultancy or freelance writing), you may be selling other people’s products (e.g. affiliate marketing with Amazon or eBay), you may be being paid because someone signed up for a product on your site or clicked an advertisement (Adsense). The level and type of selling involved obviously varies hugely. Selling your own product probably involves some copy writing skills, persuading someone to click an Adsense ad requires you NOT to ask them to click the ad – you have to be way more subtle.
3. Lose the cynicism. YES PEOPLE MAKE MONEY ONLINE. Just like their are successful businesses in the real world. With a lot lower financial risk (I don’t care how much your fancy 2-screen warp-powered PC cost -its a lot less than a lease of a retail store!). The real question is can YOU make money online. If you believe you can’t, expect it all to fail and be a scam, guess what – your expectations will probably be realized. This is not kharma, its simply that you spend all your time studying and reading and very little doing After a year or so you will gain a lot of knowledge and have little to show for it in your bank account. Yes everything you try won’t work – but the knowledge gained by trying and failing is much more useful than the stuff you learned in a book (or a blog).
4. There is a lot more money to be made outside of the “make money online / blogging” world than inside it. The make money online is incestuous – that’s why you get the same offers in your emails from different “experts”. That’s why you buy one thing and get the heavy up sell. Selling grass seed to someone who needs sow a lawn or a hammer to someone who need to redecorate has the advantage of simplicity – you are actually fulfilling a real customer need.
5. The single easiest way to make money online is to understand and apply keyword research. Once you understand what a keyword is and why some are more valuable than others you have the basis for almost any online (or indeed off line) busineses.

Well those were my big learning curves, do any of them sound familiar? What are your road blocks to making an online income?

I love your first point Lis! So many bloggers just treat their blog as a side project – and that is the result that they get!
Sure you are building friends, but more importantly you are networking. Yes you are writing posts, but also you are creating intellectual property!

I think these lessons are very valuable Lis and pretty much what I’ve found in my attempts to monetize my blog. My main income comes from working as an interim manager, however I’m currently developing passive income streams through a mixture of my own products and some Internet marketing of the products I use.
It’s a little chicken and egg. You need people to come to your store to sell, but you need content in your store to make them want to visit. The eternal dilema. Do I spend time on content or developing product?

I personally wouldn’t spend time devleoping a product until I was sure there was demand – I’d start off with an affiliate product to check the market …

My main idea is figuring out what I could sell online in order to make money. I want to provide real people with real beneficial goods and products and not just something they would throw away in a week or so after dropping even 10 dollars. I want to provide real stuff.
Any suggestions?
Eric´s last blog ..Want To Fail With Me: Lets Help Each Other Succeed
Eric I do it the other way around – I find keywords that I think I can get a site to rank for – then I look at what products are available (eBay, Amazon, clickbank) – if products exist there is probably money in the market, in fact I may even be able to provide something more useful long term – but short term I will try to make sure there is a market

Lis,
Not a bad idea. Maybe we could talk further about things in the future?

You have to choose something pretty weird to not find a market for it. You can make money off pretty much everything because you can sell to the entire world.
Plus, I wouldn’t be able to do it, build a business on a product I don’t give a damn about.. No matter how high it ranks in adwords.
Experimently´s last blog ..Let’s create some buzz
Maybe its just the way my mind works – there is little to no money in the following : “free wordpress themes” “ancient Inca ruins” “how to square the triangle” – informational topics ie sorted out someone’s home work out for them or someone looking for “free” resources – hard to make money from those that don’t want, or don’t have money to spend. Equally certain segments of the population won’t spend money online period e.g. “retirement destinations for New Zealanders”

So. Will you be my mentor?
Seriously, we sound similar. It’s not just that I don’t believe I could sell beer to a thirsty man who has just played a gruelling game of football, but that cynical spirit is living in me and living strong.
But this was helpful, I’ll try lose the cynic.

Yeah seriously you do need to lose the cynic – I fought that for ages because the cynic saved my sanity while I did the job I hated – but it was no use to me when I went out in business

Lis,
Excellent post, especially #s 4 & 5. I don’t want to fall in the #4 trap. I have a blog documenting my journey tomaking “passive” income and I do plan on monetizing it, but I don’t expect to make any sort of decent cash from it.
I expect to learn a lot about SEO and use those skills to promote products I”m comfortable with, hoping to make money from being an affiliate, selling my own product(s), or GOogle Adsense.
No matter how you boil it down, you need to learn about keyword research and SEO and apply that knowledge. Otherwise, you == toast!

Hmm,
Very well said.
There is a lot more money outside than in the “make money online” click.
Earning money is as simple as meeting people’s needs and charging less in cash value than you give them in use value.

interesting post…keywords do work…consistent and fast paced blogging is another key…also if you have 200+ good quality posts and not even 10 unique visitors you can better spend money in adwords…it really works…note that your posts must be unique, content rich posts…also have an email subscription enabled from day 1…its one month since i started my blog and I have 900+visitors so far…though i didnt use adwords yet…my 203+unique content rich blog pulled these visitors

infopedia I notice each and everyone of your posts is keyword focussed – that will certainly help! I have no experience with adwords – I understand that its hard to get right – and they will spend a lot less money if you can rank the page high in the SERPS anyway.
In my experience consistent and fast paced blogging makes no difference – you can still rank very well if you only post once ever few months – and the search traffic is immune to whether you have posted or not. In fact (and James would obviously disagree with me) – I would rather read one or two posts a week than multiple posts a day – its too much too keep up with.
The easiest way to make sure that Google thinks your site is a decent size is to ensure that you use Categories and tags and that you are allow indexing of those pages !

Right now I am in the’ blogging ‘business and I need to get beyond but I keep waffling and looking for just a bit more information. Between James and Liz, I am just going to have to jump in.
Ralph – in the (approximate) words of Nike “Just F*ing Do It!” Perfection is a deadly sin on trying to start any business – you will never have all the information you need to launch a perfect site – just do it – what’s the worst that can happen? You earn no money – but you will hav learned much more than from studying

Great story! It really proves that people can blog/work online/do anything as long as they learn, prepare and do. I just got into the amazon affiliate program and look forward to seeing those results.

If I had written it I would have thought you plagiarized the whole bit about selling and the salesman! That was so perfectly put and just what I have always thought about sales and my role in sales. Starting myblog and working to monetize it has taught me more about sales and marketing than I learned in business school, because I always said, “I am not a salesman, I don’t want to be a salesman. Bring people to me and I will help them but I wont go get them.”
Great post Lis, I enjoyed reading it! Headed over to your site now…

A lot of good information and things to think about. I am glad I came across them. I am just starting out with blogging. I have several ideas for building money online but just sitting on them until I understand them better. For me, to get started with anything further, I want to understand blogging and writing content before I invest more than my free time. I plan to work on my current projects and keep your tips in mind as start building a strategy on my current projects and future plans as well.

What a great post Lis,
Got me thinking,
Not wanting to jump on ya thread Lis, James, but something struck me…
Points 4 and 5 are the two biggies, and I just had a thought, recently in emails back and forth, James and I were just waffling about a few things, blogging, life in general, kids, working, etc and the topic of making money come up, plans, etc, you know, just the general chatty things the likes of us lot think about which we find hard to chat to others about, (you know, that glazed eye look you get back!
) and having had some thought about it…
Depending on James and if he thinks it will be worth doing, I may well have a go at a guest post (Never guest posted anywhere yet, or taken a guest post on own blog) explaining some of it, while also showing Lis’s points 4 and 5 clearly are right… in other words, show as well as explain, yet to see if the actual thing will work, part of what i need to get started on but it could be an interesting thing to do.
For several reasons…
1, It gets me pushed into doing it. (soon as I hit post here I am setting myself up for it?!) :/
**
2, It may be an interesting study for all of us.
3, You may be able to think of what you could do in a similar vein or at least it gets us all considering things differently.
4, Non of you could take my idea and stop ME doing this.
5, It ain’t so bloody difficult and if this idiot (me) can do it, you can!
*(Plus I need a new pc… this one has already been burnt out once and rebuilt! ) so I have to get some money to get one, so may as all see what’s learn-able from it.
I may and often do…fail! So, whatever, see what happens “init”
Sorry Lis, James.
Again, great post here and I think Lis’s blog is definitely one to read.

Lis your story is one of the best on the web that I know of.. Whenever people ask me how can I build a residual income from websites? I tell your story and how you stuck it out as you and I both know 90% of the people that want too… never do. Of the 10% that actually put a site up
most quit within a year I think 0.005% success is probably to big a number.
Only in retrospect have I likened this business to selling timeshare something I did a long time ago everybody wants the lifestyle but few
have the faintest idea what it takes.. what it takes is very simple work and stubbornness not to quit.
Yeah I get the feeling the “industry” is maturing a bit now . There are genuine programs out there that work – I don’t think there was anything when I started. Maybe the odds will get right up to 5% in the future
