First things first, this isn’t a ‘I get more traffic than you’ or ‘My alexa ranking is better than you’ type of post. I also want to make clear alexa.com isn’t an entirely accurate way of comparing sites against each other, that said it’s the basis of this post.
Think of this post as a very public wake up call to myself, a big slap in my own face while I’m in the midst of trying to make money online. I have talked a lot on here about getting traffic to your site and how to do it, this site is living testament that it can be done quickly, 3 months is all it took to rank higher than some of the probloggers, but that’s where this post comes into play.
Quick caveat about the examples below, Nathan, Mike, Robb and David all have other ventures online, the sites listed aren’t their only source of income or traffic, that said all the sites listed are (to my knowledge) contributing to their income.
- Nathan Hangen, Mike’s Life
Now the screen shot above shows the 1 month traffic from Alexa.com (again not entirely 100% reliable) of this site shown in blue, NathanHangen.com shown in red and MikesLife.org shown in green. As you can see all three sites pretty much have grown and tracked each other over the past month and now they rank as following for the one month average (correct at the time of writing);
TheInfoPreneur – 38,071
NathanHangen – 52,008
MikesLife – 41,534
- Robb Sutton, David Risley
The second example shows this site again marked in blue, RobbSutton.com marked in red and DavidRisley.com marked in green. This site tracks quite closely to Robb’s over the past month and eventually catches up to David’s site. David was the clear runner mid January, probably down to the run up to the launch of Blog Masters club. The one month traffic rank for us all are as follows;
TheInfoPreneur – 38,071
RobbSutton – 42,124
DavidRisley – 28,313
So with the exception of David’s site, this site is definitely in contention with the others, but that’s where the similarities end, because all the guys mentioned above are making money online, they are leading the way and proving it can be done. A business isn’t a business unless it’s making money, a problogger is called such because they make money online, they sell products and or services.
This site could be ranked as high as Mashable and still make no money, unless I start offering services and selling products. Don’t get me wrong here, I’m not all about the coin, but I do work a 60hr week in my normal job, so to replace my wages via my online ventures would be and will be the ultimate solution.
So why the post? A big fat wake up call to me and anyone else who is looking at the unique visitors and subscribers going up and up and your Alexa rank is creeping towards the top 100k or higher, if you are serious about your ventures online turning into profitable then you and I need to make that transition and start selling, may seem a hard reality, but it’s a necessary one.
Are you holding yourself back? Do you want to make money, but afraid or causing ripples in the relationship between you and your readers? I just want to say that Nathan, David and Robb have been extremely helpful to me and have offered their advice and help completely free with no sales pitch, real approachable guys who understand this as a business, they get flack for it sometimes, but for those of us who do want to make it online, whether we run a charity like GiveaBrick or a site like this, if you don’t offer anything, you can’t receive anything.
Bottom line, traffic or ranking is irrelevant. If you want to make money, first you have to sell or offer something….. simple.
What does everyone think?

This post was very valid in what has gone on with me personally. Recently my Alexa score has gone down dramatically because I was incapacitated for over 3 weeks and unable to get online.
Prior to this my rank had reached around 400k in only 2 months. However some people see my site and score and think that I am getting lots of traffic if you do not have something to sell then that traffic is coming in almost in vain, if your intention is to make money online that is… Anyhow, I really enjoyed your post and I’ve subscribed to your blog…. keep it comin’

Hey James,
Really interesting post about your traffic compared to everyone else’s. I loved the wake-up call at the end. Really a slap in the face for some of us (me…) Thanks for the post!
Peace,
