The Shocking Truth

by theinfopreneur on January 8, 2010

I have been deliberating for some time whether or not to write this. The tipping point for me was when I received an email from a guy in the US who talked about his past and how he didn’t really feel he could realise his dream of running his own bakery and felt the things he went through were holding him back.

Now this post isn’t going to depress you, instead it’s designed to show those of you who dream, but deep down think you won’t be able to make it, you absolutely can make it, I’m just like you and I’m doing it! So here goes, a post that is a little bit different, but 100% InfoPreneur;

  • 6

6 is the number of times I was homeless between the ages of 9 and 16. When people think of the homeless they usually only visualise the person sat on a piece of cardboard by the train station asking for change. This wasn’t me, I was a boy so I still had school to go to, but every now and again it wasn’t safe for me to stay at home. Being raised in a house of alcohol and abuse you get used to a lot, but every now and again you know when it’s time to get out.

I used to sleep in squats, then go to school in the morning. When I got to school I made out I was really interested in home economics (cookery class) so I could stuff my face with (overcooked) pasta and bread. After school had finished I played Basketball because they had a water fountain, after a day or two it was usually safe to go home.

  • Lonely

I cooked my own meals from about the age of 8 years old. I’m no Gordon Ramsey, it was beans and toast all the way. I then rushed my food upstairs into my bedroom and lock myself away for the night. The house was in a bad area, which meant once it was dark I couldn’t go anywhere unless it was vital to get out.

I loved basketball as a kid and used to dream of being the next Shaquille O’Neil, I used to draw the number 32 on my trainers and my ball, that dream turned into a mini reality when a local basketball player said I should start playing for my school team, that led to me having trials for the U18’s England team at the age of 14.

  • Drugs

I used to hang around older kids from another local school, I loved those guys and one of them even made it into professional rugby. I mentioned the guy who made it into rugby because he was the only one who made it out. I say out because as all young lads do, who have no guidance and no good influence, we ended up in trouble. Drinking was my thing, cheap larger, awful spirits anything that we could get the older kids to buy us. My thing was drink, their thing was drugs and at the age of 15 I saw my best friend hit by a bus after he was high as a kite.

The very next day I went to the Military careers office and spoke to a recruiting officer.

  • Birthday

I remember the most important lesson ever learning was being taken by my dad to buy me a birthday present. I knew he had been drinking, but into the taxi and towards the shops we went. ‘I wonder what he’ll get me?’ Minutes later he was screaming at me, the taxi stopped and the driver threw him out and my dad lay on the pavement swearing about  god knows what. I got out of the taxi, but being a 10 year old boy I had no idea where I was or how to get home, but I started walking.

That taxi driver got the house keys out of my dads pocket gave them to me and drove me straight home. He didn’t leave me behind.

Now I remembered this when I was on a school trip (paid for by my friends mum) in Belgium, we did the educational tours, then one day we went to the beach. There were no warning flags out, so we went out into the sea. One of the girls got stuck on some rocks and couldn’t get back to shore. I was the closest person to her so I started swimming towards her to see if I could help. My teacher (who had a really strong Liverpool accent) shouted at me to bring her to the shore quickly because the tide was coming in fast.

I got to that girl, helped her off the rocks and she started swimming back then boom, I got him with a wave and then I got stuck. To cut a long story short I ended up severely cut from getting bashed about on the rocks and a life guard stopped me from drowning with a quick rescue breath.

Why did I do this? Because that taxi driver never left me.

Now look at the end of each of the bullet points I make. Out of despair comes victory and out of solitude comes friendship.

Was this a terrible childhood? No of course it wasn’t, granted it wasn’t pleasant but people go through a hell of a lot worse every single day on this planet. People rise above it, adapt and conquer those fears. This site is my way of helping people, it’s mine and I’m extremely proud of it. If you have a dream, no matter how big or small keep hold of it, because in the end, only you can break you.

This is a different post, but hopefully it will help some or all of you in those times of doubt.

What does everyone think?

This is so true. People talk about how you can make your dreams come true if you never quit trying. The thing I’ve noticed is that those who are in worse situations seem to live their dreams in the end and come out of it much greater than those who didn’t have it so bad.

Maybe that’s because the people who didn’t have it so bad don’t think they deserve it or something else. Who knows? What matters in the end is that if you want something bad enough and you go after it without letting someone else talk you out of it, you can have it. Just never give up and you’ll surely make it.

I don’t agree that some people deserve things more than others. We are all the same here, but I do agree that if you know what it’s like to have nothing, you work harder to achieve it

James,

It takes courage to write about personal challenges like this, and I admire it. I have had my share of struggles, and frankly, without them I would not be where I am now. They were my life lessons (and continue to be), and I do not regret any of them. It did take me a long time, however, to overcome some of the effects – while my parents weren’t alcoholics, one of my grandparents was a violent drunk and the effects did pass down the family line. One of the worst effects on me was focusing on people outside myself for self-worth. For me, it’s a slow, incremental process to move away from negative patterns from childhood and to develop new healthier ways of being. Commitment to growth, to self, to finding and developing an interest, a passion, has been essential for me. It’s a process and I am grateful for every minute, even the dark ones. I applaud your honesty and courage.

James;

One of your guest posters – Michael Fletcher, recently wrote a post about the power of vision and integrity and I asked him if he believed that everyone has the same opportunity to realize their goals and dreams, despite where they started from.

I guess the answer is “yes”.

I’ve met people who grew up like you James and I’ve seen them turn out a lot differently.

We’ve never met but I can say, honestly and meaningfully, that I, for one, am proud of you. This post frames some of your other posts in a more holistic way to me now. And the “whole” (to mix metaphors a little bit) is much greater than the sum of the parts…

Sure…

You mention in a bunch of your posts how committed you are to helping others and to “replying to everything” even though so many people are telling you that this is not a very realistic approach.

But you stick with it – you’re TOTALLY committed to it.

After reading this post, now I understand why. It’s about so much more than just you’re committment to blogging, it about your undiminished committment to acheiving your own goals while at the same time helping others.

I guess I understand where your unrelenting committment comes from, having read this post.

Cheers!

James,

I met a guy called Richard McCann a few years ago while working with some school kids up north. I’d never heard of him before but I watched him give an 1hr presentation to a group of around 200 year 9s. (That’s a tough gig, trust me!)

Turns out Richard’s mum was the first victim of the Yorkshire Ripper. He then spent the next 20 years of his life being abused at home, going to jail, getting involved with drugs, and dealing with his sisters suicidal tendencies.

One day he decided things had to change and went back to school. He’s now written a best selling book and tours the UK talking to kids about having an “I can” attitude, using his past experiences to better the lives of others. He, like you, is a great inspiration to me.

I find this as a perfect story for 2 reasons. First it shows, that the acts of kindness really matter. They don’t have to be huge things, sometimes the acts that seem to us insignificant are the most important.

The other reason is, that the story shows, that in most cases we can find from horrible situations a spark of hope. Using that hope, it is possible to survive and make a better life.

Thank you for sharing your story.

Ps. It’s always amazing, how much strength we have inside of us :-)

I truly believe what obstacles people have to overcome make them stronger.

I recently featured a video of Nick Vujicic (also talking to kids) which is one of the most inspirational things I’ve ever seen – you can truly find inspiration. Especially when you have a tough day.

Wow thanks for the openness and honesty. I could write a book of struggles from bad childhood experiences to bad choices thereafter. I could sit around and daydream about the future. But having one foot in yesterday and the other in tomorrow only means I’m pooping all over today. My life goes much smoother when I live in today, not forgetting the past but learning from it. And I’ve never been more happier than when I am giving it away to keep it. Doing this always keeps me grounded and allows my dreams of tomorrow to arrive just like the sun of a new day. It’s only cloudy if I see it that way!

I’ve always thought that the most important lessons learned in life come with the greatest pain. The important thing is not how you started your journey, but how you will finish it. As Don Power said above, you are a very committed person, and now we begin to understand why, and how truly committed you are, not just in your blogging activity but in any area of your life.

Thanks James for sharing this inspirational piece of your life.

This is the second post on your blog that I read. I have a much better understanding about you and it explains your commitment to your blog. I never struggled in any way growing up – well that’s not really true – but my struggles seem insignificant. What makes someone strong enough to overcome what seem incredible handicaps? What makes them able to decide what their life should be and then go on to make it so when others with every apparent advantage squander it all. How do people know – or learn – that they are who they decide to be and not what they – or anyone else thinks they are. It has to be more than the kindness of the cab driver. You have an impressive story. Thanks.

I think it took a lot of guts to write this, so thank you very much for sharing your story.

I think you will help more people with posts like this than what you expected.

We fall into the mindtrap of thinking we have the worst situation and that our situations are unique, until we realize that there are people out there who have had it a lot worse and have managed to gather the strength to overcome everything that life has thrown at them.

Your past definitely DOES NOT predict your future. No excuses.

I was made homeless 2 days before Christmas when I was 19. My Mum and Step Dad threw me out when I got home one night, why, I have no idea to this day. I spent Christmas on the streets before my mate, Mark and his family took me in. I am forever grateful to them for doing that and one day hope to repay them in some way.
Anyway, I took a long hard look at where I was and where I was going and joined the Army. I spent 4 great years in the Army, learnt a number of trades and now, well I am doing something I never counted on EVER doing, writing for a living!

Great post once again mate.

Hey, nice post. I often find myself looking at my life as a great under achievement. I am twenty five and don’t have a lot to show for any of it. I do have a wonderful wife and war poodle (he is small, but he is mighty) I was a bit of a football star in high school and had promising grades. I decided drugs were more important than college. Seeing the error of my ways I repented and gave my heart back to jesus. I was working as a postal carrier after a year or two (a pretty nice job) I ended up backsliding and back on drugs. I now work night shifts as a dispatcher and don’t get to spend much time with my wife. I want to make money online so I can be home with her. It just feels like the market is sort of saturated so to speak or my niches are dominated buy shopping adds and big chain stores. Plus I really feel like the main focus of my life needs to be God and I don’t know if monetary freedom is in the picture. I know it could be if thats what I chased but a part of me feels like I would trust more in the almight dollar than the almighty god. It is my hope though that I can make money online and not neglect God and that he will give me my hearts desire of being free to spend time with family and loved ones. Anyways, I will be checking back in your blog. Thanks for the pep talk :)
