A bit unfortunate this title, because it suggests a little ‘alone’ time with yourself, however, What my game is about is this; beat your stats from yesterday and force your site to do better. You write content for your website, because you want people to read it, no matter what other intentions you have once your reader is at the site, you want, firstly, to get them to read what you are talking about.
So what’s the game and how can you play? Well it’s all about taking yesterdays figures or activity you or your site has done and improving on it.
- Stats
I don’t use Google Analytics as most of you know, various reason but mainly because I know for a fact it isn’t tracking some of my visitors and clicks etc. I know this because I have StatPress and Site Stats both reporting the same things that GA isn’t, whether or not it’s not installed properly or just isn’t recognising the short url’s I don’t know, anyway I digress.
I always look at my traffic stats, to see how many visitors I have had today, what search engine results I am getting and to see if I am beating yesterdays and this week is beating last weeks.
Just to explain the screen grab, it’s my StatPress plugin, which shows my unique visitors (in dark blue), pageviews (blue), spiders (light blue) and feeds in orange. So this grab shows the last 5 days, the stats plugin is saying the site had 368 uniques yesterday, 2,885 page views with 1,590 coming from spiders and 189 from feeds. Now, I have yet to across a traffic analyser that gives 100% accurate information, my other plugin says I have had more than this daily, but it give me a bench mark goal to play the game.
- Comments
The site has been averaging 50-100 comments a day for a while now (about a month) and I can always tell is been a quiet day (traffic wise) when the comments are low. Best way to improve the amount of comments you receive? Well two ways, reply to the comments being made, this creates a community, which for me is the most important part of this site, I love hanging out with your guys in the comments section.
Secondly is to comment on other sites. I would say 90% of the sites I comment on, the owner of that site comes and comments or at least visits.
- Posts
If you publish new content to your site 4 or 5 days a week, then try updating 7 times a week, just to see if you get an increase in traffic and how it affects your comments, whether you get more or less. The main game I play with my posts is to try to get that new post onto the most popular posts you see on the top left corner.
This is a great game for me as it forces me to improve on the quality of post and think about what the readers of this site would like to read. Hopefully this post will be up there sharpish.
- Other Sites
Probably the best part of the game for a lot of reasons, but the most time consuming one. Visiting other sites and leaving comments, where I can add value, has to improve every day, other wise I feel I’m letting myself down. So take today for example, by the time I have gone to sleep I would have visited 30 sites, tomorrow I will push it to 31 and so on. You can’t always do it, because this is the last thing I do when I work on the site, but it works wonders.
By visiting a lot of sites and leaving your bread crumbs, where you can, increase your presence and chances of click through from other people’s audience. I also like doing this because it provides a lot of my inspiration for my content.
As I said it is really time consuming so I do this at the end of my day, so that I know the site and it’s readers and catered for first then I visit for long as I can.
So there it is, the game to play with yourself.
What does everyone think?
What games do you play with yourself?

No wonder you have the success. You have a system to measure results. You track those results and then use them to tune your product. And of course when all is said and done your are a demon to do the necessary work. No magic! No black hat! Just putting in the time……. and being a real human being.

I like the idea of making everything into a game. You have to drive yourself to improve and compete against the system (really could not think of anything else to call it).

Just want to point out that Google analytics doesn’t report visits from bots and spiders. I would recommend using several stat counters (I use statpress too) so you can get a true feeling for your progress.
It appears the spiders hitting the site are counted in the Visitors summary by Statpress. I turned off counting spiders in the statpress options and saw my Visitors count drop almost in half. So the accuracy may not be true in Statpress if you haven’t done this.

Hey Brother,
Yeah I think GA doesn’t fully recognise short URL or at least owl urls. Crazy really, I use a few different plugins as you say and also track it on my server via webalyzer. I wish there was a 100% way of tracking it, either way I don’t get too hung up about it just use it as a rough benchmark

Dude,
Nice games!! That’s a good plan and I’ve even thought about this stuff previous to your post, so good timing.
I can’t really think of a game I play… Maybe one is just to see if I can post every day for a week. Then see if I can beat my record, and post every day for two weeks, etc… until months go by. This helps me when it comes to staying consistent and reliable to my readers.
God bless.

And by the way, I think I’m close to beating my most popular post, “Why success and authority cannot come apart from being yourself!!” with a new post, “Why bad things happen to good people.” So that’s exciting. It just needs four more comments and we’re golden. That post got promoted to a ton of different sites in my niche, including a facebook fanpage with over 8,000 fans. So I’m pretty pumped about that.

Krish,
I used to post 1-2 per week. Then following James’ advice I decided to up the blog posting. Since then my traffic has had tremendous growth. Up 50% in the month. So the truth is it does work.
I was a little concerned about the amount of time I would have to spend in order to make up the content, however, so far, it’s been manageable.

Hey James!
Don’t turn into a stats junkie, man. Sure they’re fun to look at, especially when they are on the up and up, but they have a nasty habit of sucking up your time and keeping you from focusing on what’s important.
All the best, mate
Steve.

OMG blue-eyes…i check my stats everyday. Get with it ahahha
Can’t manage what you don’t measure, so well done on that. As another commenter said, though, don’t get TOO into the stats. Big numbers don’t mean much if you’re not doing the right things with those numbers. It is more important to take a holistic view to the whole thing rather than just keep striving to see the number be higher. I actually don’t check my stats all that often. Isn’t really necessary and it can lead to tunnel vision.
Twitter: theinfopreneur
January 31, 2010 at 15:12
Hey Man,
Yeah I get that, but I only use it as a bench mark so no tunnel vision here. It’s a good way to keep pushing on, for me anyway. Hey when is my guest post going up brother?
Gonna be getting back into the content groove once this launch is over. You have no idea how much I’m looking forward to that, too.

You’re spot on here David. The most important stats are the number of conversions rather than the number of absolute visitors.
I just take one (very small) issue with your comment on you can’t manage what you can’t measure. Just remember you can measure a person’s heart rate, but it won’t stop them having a heart attack.
Matthew Needham´s last blog ..Aliens have landed
That’s kind of a different comparison, though. You monitor your heart, you can avoid the heart attack in the first place.
That’s just basic management strategy. You have to keep track of what you intend to manage. Otherwise you have no idea what’s going on.

I tend to use my stats to give me an good idea about what’s working – i.e. am I getting more traffic from Twitter referrals or from elsewhere.
I like to look at my numbers a fair bit – that just the way my brain works but I think the number I like to look at the most is the number of comments I get on each post. That always gives me a warm fuzzy feeling inside.

I agree, twitter is by far the best source and comments or posting to other sites. I think I may learn to post for other sites may bring more traffic? You think?
Analytics will not show spiders and duplicate visits from same IP in the unique range, it is actually more accurate for representing “valid” traffic to your site than using most wordpress plugins. I tried wordpress.com stats and it would track every page refresh from the same IP if the user wasn’t an admin logged in.
But really you shouldn’t be stressing over stats on a day to day basis, this will drive you nuts, you are better off using metrics and comparing % and growth on a weekly or monthly basis. You can track comments, feeds. You can only do so much to get traffic to your site, and your site still needs to get more organic search traffic, it relies way to heavily on referral traffic right now.

James, I’d not heard of statpress, so I’ve just downloaded it and will be able to ‘play this game’ over the next few days as I quite like the analysis it’s showing.
Anyway, I’ve been trying for a while to increase my site visitors and the most succesful method is the drive to make it better. This does indeed increase your visitors which makes it a sort of self fulfilling prophecy!
The more you try to make it better, the better it gets.

I like the game, I play games or test different things all the time. I tried different posting time and frequency. I think the bottom line for me is I need to post more. I upped it last month and hope to up it more this month but this month I have a lot planned both personally and with my blog. So it will be a challenge but I am up for it.
