I admire people who can take that moment to ponder and think about a reaction. I also admire the upbringing and environment that must allow such a sedate approach to life. I like it when I see someone hit with something and they don’t retaliate instantly, they calculate a response, to me that is special.
Me? I’m pure fire, a uncomplicated, simple guy who is motivated and a bit of a lit firework. I have lived a life in which decisions need to be made instantly and your gut feeling is the only feeling. No board meetings, no deliberating, just pure rapid fire.
- Tinder
I have lived my life on the edge, from a very early edge I have been pushing the boundaries, not to test the limits of authority or to be a rebel, but to see what life is all about. I suppose when I was a kid I didn’t know why I was so motivated to push myself to the limit, maybe it’s in my DNA.
I was described as a tinder box once, all it takes is one small spark and I’m off. Tinder is a fantastic thing to be made of, but you have to surrounded by long burning fuels too, which is the way I see this site.
- Grain
I’m not one of these non-conformist types, nor someone who disagrees with everything he reads or hears, I just do things the way I want to and the way I think is the best or right way to do it. By doing it my own way, it always seems to be against the grain. Thinking of a different way to do everything, just to see if it can be done.
I did a 54 mile ultra-marathon in the dessert a few years ago, just to see if it could be done. I was sat around with a couple of lads one day and we got to talking about the half marathon we did the day before. We started bragging how easy it was, and before we knew it I suggested we do a Ultra-Marathon. Down the MSR (main supply route) and back. No competitions, no awards, no medals just personal pride.
- Energy
Hard work means different things to different people. Hard work for me was being in the military on operational tour constantly, 18 hour days 7 days a week for a long time. These days I have a full time job (60hrs a week) driving trucks, a young family and obviously work on the site.
Hard work and busy work are two different things in my mind, but I think by living my life the way I have and continue to do, means I can keep going at the rate I am. Energy can never be lost, it merely changes state.
But is being pure fire good?
Well, that’s what got me thinking about this post. I’m not every one’s cup of tea, I get that. To be honest if I came across someone who was like ‘just get on with it’ etc etc it would do my head in, so being pure fire isn’t always the best way to be. The ability to think things through and articulate yourself properly is a fantastic gift, which I find fascinating. Just look around the comments on this site, clever people contribute here, the thinkers.
I’m a hot head, I react instantly whether it’s needed or not. This also means I doing everything at full throttle, it works for me and this site, but it’s not for everyone.
What are you made of?

No tinder here. I’m more like damp moss. Hard to get that fire started and even harder to keep it going. I have to continually tell myself to stop considering and make a decision. And then I have to tell myself to actually act on that decision. I have to tell myself that ready, fire, aim is ok.

Hmm, you got me thinking, James.
While I don’t think I’m a fire, maybe I’m more of a slow and steady burn. Or maybe that’s just wishful thinking
I hope that I have a steady burn for those things in life that call for it. While at other times, fire is needed to burn everything down so that, like a phoenix, something better will come from the ashes.
I like this “Energy can never be lost, it merely changes state.” Very true!
I’ll be interested to read some of the responses you get to this.

I can get fired up pretty quick myself. Like during yesterday’s little “incident.” In general I would have to say that a more considered reaction is a superior way to react…more in keeping with the spirit of the old Chinese saying, “revenge is a dish best served cold.” You’re less likely to commit to an action from which there is no recovery. Devise a strategic reaction, rather than a barfight.

Hm… peat bog maybe for me. Small sparks are sometimes all it takes to cause a raging inferno underneath the surface, but they first have to survive the damp and mud to get to there… THEN they have to force their way out before they burn out. Maybe. Possibly wishful thinking there (though it’s certainly how it works with anger for me
)
I would agree with the thought of you being a tinder box though; very apt. It works for you, so rock on really!

I would say I’m a thinker learning to be a quicker thinker and more of a doer now than anything.
I take action when I know it needs done. I feel it’s best this way. If I mess up, and I know that I will at some point as I’m not perfect, I’ll learn quicker by just getting in there and making anything happen than I will by thinking about it and then applying it.
Great article, brother!

There are times when immediate action is required and there are also times when it is better to think about the paths that are available to you. There are times when procrastination means you will miss an opportunity and there are times when jumping the gun may also mean you have missed the opportunity.
Sometimes no matter what you do you’ll will stuff up. The thing is to learn, regroup and go at it again.

Before I even read the comments on water, that’s what I decided I am. Of course, I’m a cancer, a water sign, so makes sense. But water, in addition to being very adaptable, flows around and encompasses all things – in my case, points of view. It’s soft, gentle, comfortable, but can also be raging, flooding, and towering. I’m generally very calm, kind, and likeable, and I also have passion that wells up from the depths to become a swirling whirlpool. I hope to pull many into my sphere of influence and help them find their own path to true self.
Thanks, James.

I’m made of sugar and spice and all things nice!
To be honest I hate authority. I can’t be told what to do, what to say and who to be.
At work I get annoyed if my manager so much as asks me to hand him the stapler, so imagine how I feel when he asks me to do something more complex.
When I go to theme parks and the guy there tries to show me where I can park I have to fight the urge to drive right down to the monorail and park when I want to!
I like to think I’m made of fire too, but I can only get lit up if I really care about something. Find what ignites your fire and just do it!

I have energy for sure, but unfortunately most of it has to go to my day job. The energy I have left for blogging is really just a hobby. I myself am only blogging for fun if I had to make it my career I would be too stressed to enjoy doing it. You my friend are doing outstanding and have done more in 3 months than most have done in 2 years time.

James, I think as long as the fire is focussed, I don’t see that there’s a problem. I’m a bit of a paradox, I think very quickly and have lots of different ideas. I work well with people and link various ideas together to discover issues or create better solutions.
The biggest problem I have is the time to carry out my ideas.
