I saw a guest post on Problogger the other week in which some one was giving advice on how to increase Alexa (The ranking system which claims to show how popular a site is compared to all the other websites in the world) ranking by 2 million places in just over 2 months. I immediately thought, ‘ I did better than that’. Not to say it wasn’t a well written article, it was, but I thought yeah power to you for doing that, but it can actually be done to better effect. 11 weeks ago I published my first post with no mailing list and no social media presence and after a week or so I finally got recognised by Alexa at 8,500,000, today I am ranked 83,482 (28,000 in the US)
- Comment
This site receives about 50-70 comments a day on average, I put that down to the amount I comment on other sites and down the the commentluv plugin. Commentluv (the plugin that allows readers to leave a link of their latest post under their comment) went offline for a day recently and my traffic dropped a bit. Not a lot, but enough to notice and I put that down to commentluv not working right across the internet. Conclusive proof (in my eyes) that commenting does work.
I’m always banging on about why you need to contribute (not spam comment) to other sites whether they are in your market place or not. Prime example of this is Eric. Eric only found my site a few weeks ago, but has left 72 comments so far on this site. That’s just here, he can be seen everywhere, that tactic has seen his site grow from nothing to rocketing up the ranks with a one month average of 315,000. Ben is the same, 100 comments here and he too can be seen everywhere and has improved his site ranking, which is only two months old by the same amount!
- Following
Having a strong following is one of the major components. If you are not loyal to your readers, they will never be loyal to you. Loyal followers means they will spread your content for you and contribute when they feel they can add value.Your social media following is important too, I use twitter a lot, but I also help a lot of people on their too with @’s and DM’s. Look after your readers, you need them.
I maintain a ‘reply to everything’ policy, is the best way to increase your traffic and ranking. If you can demonstrate time and again, that they come first and you will help and listen without an agenda, you will rocket up the ranks no problem.
Matthew over at BigRedTomatoCompany said by using the tactics I talk about, increased his traffic by 40%
- SEO
I ignored SEO when I started this site. Huge mistake and was done out of pure ignorance, I didn’t understand it and was getting great results from the social media angle. Truth is, I still don’t fully understand it, but I’m learning all the time and now search engine traffic is bringing in around 20% of my daily visitors. Ideally I want this up to around 80-90%. It does take a bit of time (from what I understand) for the search engines to start liking your juice.
I have found links outbound and inbound on this site have helped massively, as have the post titles. I’ve still not found hard concrete evidence from Google and the likes, that links in comments (like commentluv) help with page rank etc, but I expect I will learn more along the way.
Ideally you want google and yahoo and all the others to be providing most of your traffic because it’s a fantastic addition in which you don’t really have to do a lot more for.
- Tips
As I said early, It took around a week for Alexa to start holding data on the site. I read in a forum that if I added a alexa toolbar in my browser it would help get recognised quicker, it did. 3 days after doing this, I was ranked at 8,500,000, 11 weeks later it ranked over 8 million places higher!
Registering is another good way, register your site with them on their site, I have heard of instances that this got people ranked quicker who were previously not ranked at all.
Alexa do their own widget too, like mine on the left had side. No evidence to say this helps, but DragonBlogger has done a experiment on this and he concluded that it does help.
- Quantity
I’m not going to say the more you post the better your ranking will be, for me yes, it’s clearly the case, but every site is different as are the readers. Experiment with it though, try posting once a day for a week or even ten times a week to see if it does make a difference. I went almost a week only posting once a day earlier in the month and my traffic dropped, so I put it straight back up to twice a day minimum.
- Caveat
Alexa isn’t the be all and end all of a website. In fact it doesn’t actually matter very much at all, I know a lot of well respected web site owners who don’t care about their ranking. To go even further, Alexa admits, it’s not 100% accurate, it can only track the popularity of a website based on how many people who have their search toolbar installed in their browser, look at your site. I have yet to come across a system that is totally accurate and that includes Google Analytics, but it’s a fun way of seeing how you measure up against others.
Alexa does say that once a site is in the top 1% (100,000 or higher) the tracking becomes more accurate, but like I said, it’s a bit of fun, not to be taken seriously. I keep a track of mine daily, but I like the feeling of thinking ‘where am I placed today’.
So as I said, if you are interested in increasing your alexa ranking then do it the way I did it.
What does everyone think?

James,
Good points all and inspiration for us. I have been questioning my post titles lately. I haven’t really thought about them from the perspective of SEO more about how they relate to the point I think I am making. I think I need to get better about titles but I don’t know what to do or how to evaluate their quality. Have you or anybody else got any advice?

Hi Ralph,
I was puzzling over titles a few days ago and so did a little bit of research. Whilst doing so I found a great site copyblogger.com (incidentally, owned by the chap who put the thesis theme together I’m told) which has lots of helpful advice about lots of writing related topics, including titles.
Dave Doolin over at website-in-a-weekend.net also has some info about titles. They’re tagged ‘Deacon’ for some reason unknown to me.
Hope that helps,
El

Hi MIke,
Yeah that was obviously mis information I had read. Thanks for the tip and edited accordingly!
I can second that, High Alexa does not mean you will make money. You definitely want to bring your SEO up, your tactics are good for getting immediate traffic, but what if you should take a month off of blogging, and not do a single comment or post for a month? You would likely see your traffic disintegrate, this is why having most of your traffic come from Google Search results, which will perpetuate even if you should stop blogging and commenting for a week or two are also critical.

Alexa does not provide truly accurate information, therefore it can not be used to determine how popular a website is. Alexa traffic is based on those who have the Alexa toolbar installed only.

My alexa ranking has moved up a bit and truthfully I think I was obsessed with it when I first started blogging. I do look at it occasionally now, but just to see the ranking and for fun. I still am not sure how important it really is. As far as SEO I was concerned with that at the beginning too and I tried, but I have kinda let that go to and just type freely not really worrying about keywords and repeating keywords and stuff.
You do have a great ranking though Info! I like your stuff. Keep up the great work!

OK, I know Alexa isn’t totally accurate and it’s ‘just a bit of fun’ but I’ve got to be honest and say that I love it when I see the site jump from nowhere to 8.5 million to a 7 day average of 427K. Perhaps I’m just too shallow and motivated by numbers but I personally find it very exciting!
I’m also sorry to have to confess this but I check it about daily just to make sure it’s headed in the right direction
I’m not sorry to tell you though that this improvement is thanks to following James’ technique. I sleep a bit more than he does and am still working on a regular schedule for commenting but it is definitely working.

If not, here’s an idea James, we could all write reviews of each other’s sites to tell the world at large what we love about a website. What do you think folks? Is it a waste of time?

The SEO part of the article is very important, James. If you plan to monetize a blog, then you absolutely have to have targeted traffic. You need readers that will recognize a particular aspect of your site as valuable. You find those readers via the search engines. SEO is what gets you ranked higher in the search engines, and the higher the rank, the better. Few people will look much beyond the first few results. I have been noticing a trend. A good one I think. As the search engine algorithms improve, content rather than keywords manipulation becomes more important.

You were over at my camp the other day when that Comment Luv deal went down. I could not agree more on the fact that commenting drives traffic and has an affect.
I do not use the Alexa toolbar so there would be holes in any data for me, but I have never really focused too much on those rankings anyway. I just keep cranking on the content and try to keep the readers happy, the rest will take care of itself eventually.

Stunning results. It is amazing what you can accomplish when you have an explicity strategy and then execute that strategy with sheer unrelenting brute force. I’m so thrilled you’re having these kinds of results, and I learned from you, too.

I also read on another site about the use of the toolbar so I installed it a day or so ago. Will see in the next few days or week if it was an improvement. It’s not cluttering my browser and not the one I use but it’s there and interesting to see what other sites rank as I go there all I have to do is look when I think about it and poooof there it is no hassle. For instance yours says #80,683. I wonder if we read the same site about the toolbar? My question I have from the site I was on is it was saying you could use a redirect from alexa in your travels. I’m dumb at this aspect…but need to have others tell me if it is ethical so to speak. It only counts as one visit but still doesn’t sound shady. What do you think?

Hey James, I’m getting closer to getting it down to under a mil. I really think that adding the toolbar and a widget on my sites helped. It also helps if someone who visits your site has one also and increases, according to my research, if they exit with the click of your widget… and go to Alexa..
Having said that I also know that commenting and being active is as much as anything. In reality so many things play a part. I’ts important to interact and find the places to do that as well. Then you got the visits and search engines. Which doesn’t necessarily increase your alexa. One site of mine is proof of that. Almost all of my traffic on it comes from search engine and the alexa has increased but not as quick as one of the others that I leave a trail in blogger comments. jus..sayin…

Having the Alexa widget (or toolbar) used to make more of a difference than it does now. Getting traffic and readers like you do here really makes a difference.
Does a good Alexa rating matter? Yes and no. It is something to point that your site is advancing. It is a good thing to see your rating go up. I think it is just one benchmark to look and and a minor one, but I think they all add up.

I think that the trick with all of these methods and ideas is to apply the 90/10 rule (used to be 80/20). When you start thinking about SEO, SEM, blogging, Alexa, social sites–Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, directory sites, etc., it’s easy to feel overwhelmed–quickly. The one recurring them that I see is that content is king.

If you need to better your Alexa Rank, increase page views. They seem to be important.
Anyways Alexa is not everything. Even though Advertisers prefer it, if you are not getting good responses you are not really getting good traffic.

Yeah I have found page views are important to Alexa, as I said it’s only for fun really but one of a few bench marks to use.

Very nice article!
I’m actually in the middle of trying to boost my rank, so far within about 2 weeks I’ve went from 3mil to 300k rank in US.
It’s getting hard to keep the pattern, but I think if I keep posting content people seem to like things will continue on this great path.
This also has much to do with how your portray your blog and treat visitors, going overboard will drive people away.

James,
Good content here. I’m used to the ‘traditional’ ways of driving traffic (articles, SEO, PPC, etc), but I’m trying to get a handle on all this web 2.0 stuff. This article gave me a few pointers that I haven’t thought of…so thanks!

Hey Ryan,
Prior to adding the widget and submitting my site m ranking pretty much stayed the same. Granite I have a small amount of traffic anyway, but it has increased about the same time as the adding of the widget but not much. Anyway after adding it , it has dropped significantly and hope, no, it will be under a mil soon and shooting for a 1000 rank… Gotta spread it like apple butter though…..
I love your website name. Takes on a double meaning when I think about it. cheers!

Hi Anne,
Excellent news that it’s working for you, unfortunately I wish there was an easier way to do it, but it takes hours of hard work. That said it’s great to see the relationships formed out of promoting your site this way.
Do you have a comment about the difference between alexa rank and in-country rank?

Very good point Anne,
Lately I have been looking at my in country rank and at the moment the site is ranked 17,000 in the US, which for me at the moment is where the majority of the traffic comes from. Now does this matter to this site? No not one bit, but for a site that sell’s a service or product country specific then world wide rank is great but it’s the country specific rank that will really tell you if you are targetting your market audience.
Alexa is important from a couple of aspects…
1. When people are judging how much of an “authority” you are on a given topic, certainly some who know about Alexa will quickly check the rating. If your site is like 2,000,000 or more then they are more likely to write you off…but a nice, low Alexa rating can buy you some points
2. Not sure if Google depends at all on Alexa – main thing is backlinks and on-page SEO
In the end, what matters most is you knowing the keywords that get the best response from your action pages (opt-in’s, sales pages, etc…) and be able to target that traffic effectively.

Jeff, it is a good point. I’m not saying that Alexa tells you all about a site, but I can’t tell you how many posts I have read about how to get lot’s of traffic to your blog or how to achieve high ranking, while the author hardly reached 7 digit ranking in Alexa. And usually that’s not the advice I would like to follow, or at least I check if the author has put together a site which ranks better.

Hey Jeff,
Do you know much about Alexa rankings and how companys or people actually look at it from a business perspective? Genuine question, as this site is now still climbing
More from an affiliate marketing perspective.
When people look at my sites and consider becoming an affiliate – where they want to partner or JV with me to drive traffic to our sites, they do consider Alexa ranking as one factor about how popular our products are compared to other alternatives they may have.
Same thing goes for advertising – if a company or individual is looking to pay for banner, text or trade content with an “authority” site to get more traffic, then a very high Alexa rating will give them away…it’s a way of checking up on the traffic a site is getting.
All of that said – it is not a great method of determining traffic, but it is one method.

I started off just the opposite. I focused on SEO (even though I pretty much knew nothing about it) and ignored social media. That was my mistake. Well, Alexa rankings matter, if you think they matter – lol. And, it depends why you want to be in the under “100,000″ and less club..
If you want to sell your website, or advertising space on your website, and that is the unit of measure your customers need as part of an overall metric to determine a price, then so be it.
If you are developing a site as a hobbyist, or pursuing a particular passion, then, well, “it matters not”.
The main focus, in my opinion, for anyone using the Internet to sell any product or merchandise should always be keywords that can convert, links, meta tags, meta description, the right anchor text, and good content – period.
Yes, PPC and outside advertising is also part of any good marketing effort, but I am talking strictly about optimizing for the SE’s..
I have never understood why some site owners are sort of obsessed with Alexa and Page Rank. Alexa can rankings can easily be manipulated. And Page Rank does not equal “wage rank”..
Just sayin..lol..

It’s definitely good to get below 100,000. Once that occurs, you get A LOT of advertisers who want to pay money to advertise on your site. $1,000/month in income is a given with a site with a 100,000 ranking or less. And then, it’s the skies the limit!

Maybe that has something to do with it, being in the personal finance space, but I’m not sure. Every PF blogger I know below 100,000 makes $1,000 or much more a month. Perhaps it just takes time as well, in addition to the rank.
How would you classify your site? Seems to be a lot of articles on how to build a site with traffic yeah?
