This post is not really related to this site, but if I hadn’t taken steps to avoid an early plateau, it definitely would be. 9 weeks ago I published my very first post and the site has been getting busier ever since. Over 1,500 comments on over 140 posts, but it would be far to easy to stay at this level.
I want more, I want to help more people and listen to even more readers views, I want more emails asking my advice on things. Now all websites level off then climb again, level and climb, but for me and others reading this post, what if you want to minimize those leveling off periods?
- Spark
Most people know about my background, it’s something I’m not proud of, but in a way I am thankful. Having nothing makes you thankful when you do have something, no matter how small. The other thing it gives me is the ability to never expect anything. I know you have to work hard and I know my reasons for working hard.
Whether it be more time with your family, publishing your own book, or leaving the dead end job you’re in, use it. Use the energy that it gives you and get to work. If that means working even harder to stop your traffic levelling off by working more on your promotion or producing more content, then do it and remember why you are doing it.
- Evaluate
I’m always going on about how young this site is (9 weeks old in case you missed it) and one of the reasons for this is because I’m constantly looking at where I have come from to where I am going. What worked, what didn’t, what hasn’t been tried yet. All this is going through my tiny mind all day and to be honest I think it’s important that it does.
Imagine a military patrol deep behind enemy lines, no support, just 4 guys and a mission. They don’t think that they are safe because the first few miles were OK. Constantly evaluating the situation, not predicting what will happen (that will lead to disaster) but watching and remembering.
Did that controversial post bring in tons of traffic or did it back fire? When you had a guest post published on that site, did it increase your sales? Think about your past to make sure you employ the correct tactics.
Quick caveat on that would be, make sure you are careful not to overcook things as you could quickly end up in a rut, it’s easy for a pattern to emerge and take over, so evaluate and keep it fresh.
- Fight
Passion, fire, excitement, all things you need to keep you in the fight. It could have been quite easy for me to run with the life someone decided was for me. I didn’t want it and did everything I could to fight my way out. Why did you start in the first place? What was your aim and goal? Well stop putting up with this life and traffic and go and get more. Make sure you never give up on what you really want.
Even stale bread makes croutons. I’ve come from nothing, but here I am now with a 9 week old website that’s got over 1,500 comments on it and ranked as the 36,000 most popular website in the US.
- Stop Reading
Get out there and spread your content, write for others, have others write for you. Get help from your local business centre and more importantly stop wasting time. If you visit a site and add a comment to add value to the post and at the same time leave your link, that’s great. But if all you do is read facebook or play games, or anything else that’s not productive, have a very strong word with yourself.
I visit other sites all the time, I leave my crumbs everywhere I go, but I still have fresh content and reader interaction as my number 1 priority. Get your business done first, then if it means you need to stay up late answering emails and promoting your content then so be it, but at least the reason you are doing everything else is sorted.
So what does everyone think?

Ok, great post as always first of all, but I have this burning question I really need an answer to as soon as humanly possible.
“Stop Reading”
How do you ALWAYS know when to post something telling me that?!
Joking aside, I should really be writing tomorrows post, so I’ll be around to comment later

Awesome Heather, as long as you keep producing content then you are on the right track
The thing is, your business is always morphing and it can get out of control or you can control your morph or growth. Every business has phases and depending on where you are your choices will change.
Even having done it more than one time, the process is still the same each time. Your business is a live being, sort of, and you got to just get roll with it.
Right on target again James…just roll with it.

Hey Yolanda,
Just roll with it, move with the times and keep it fresh, good comment
Awesome Post Man! I like the Passion Fire and excitment. You are so right playing games on facebook just doesn’t get you anywhere. If you want to get somewhere you have to work hard at it. Sure it takes some work, but if you enjoy it it really isn’t work. For a while I felt like just dropping my blog, but I found a new spark and I am really having fun. One of the most exciting things about blogging that I really enjoy is creating a post and having comments come in. I love the interaction with the readers of my blog.
Thanks for coming by my blog and leaving some crumbs

Any time Jim,
You have one of the most unique sites, good pun on the crumbs too! Great stuff Jim keep at it
I hear you about traffic Plateau, I seemed to be at a plateau of about 250 unique visits per day for about 6 months before I broke the plateau, then I am stuck in another plateau where I seem to hover at about 400 unique per day, can’t get it to consistently stay above that.
I realize that I naturally can’t spell plateau, had to use spellcheck to fix every time I typed it here.

Brother welcome to my world! I had to spell check dyslexia! lol
Yeah I think our sites are roughly the same at the minute, I’m at about 300-400 uniques a day but I’m ready to ramp it up again!
Do you have your blog setup so it doesn’t show your own replies in the comment total? It would appear that it doesn’t, how did you do this?

What I appreciated most about this post is that is wasn’t some formulaic check list. You’ve banged on about it so much now, we know the things we should be doing to get more traffic. The tragedy is that too many people will nod along with what you are saying but then do a fraction of the work you are doing.
Great reminder of the amount of work that needs to be put in. Out of interest, do you have any sort of schedule for the order that you get things done in and if so, would you like to share? Time management is going to be important for me this year.
Thanks,
Eleanor

I had a plateau in traffic for about four months. It was highly frustrating. Telling my readers about my frustration at the time and asking for advice was what got me through the plateau. Never be afraid to ask your readers for help.

James,
You’re really getting somewhere with this blog. I really think you’re doing something incredible here and I’m glad to know you as well as I do. I’m also very happy to see you doing all of this with the reason behind it to help everyone you can because that’s what we should all be striving for and many out there do not.
Having a why for anything you do is huge. And you have a good why at that.
You really are getting yourself out there and that’s what it’s all about. I’ve seen you on so many different blogs it’s not even funny.
Excellent job on that and keep at it!

James,
Your entire response there, I truly appreciate it!
Never thought of it that way but then again, as we humans do too often than not, overlook the simplest things in life sometimes.
Thanks for the insight. If I’m seeing you everywhere it’s because I’m everywhere, obviously!
Thanks!

James,
Excellent stuff (as always). You hit the nail right on the head here. People often fail to try stuff and not test and measure the outcome.
Keep testing and measuring!

Hey. I’d be happy to get to a plateau but seriously, I do have a comment regarding your post. You say that you are not proud of your past and from what I know about you, I’d say you should be very proud of your past because you weren’t stopped by any obstacles and you didn’t let your circumstances define you. If you had grown up in a conventional middle class, sitcom family, you would probably be an ordinary guy with no vision, goals or direction like everybody else. I know you would never wish it for your kids but who would you be without it? Probably not the inimitable Infopreneur.

Addressing the plateau obviously is different for different circumstances. If your problem is that nobody knows that you exist then those breadcrumbs are the way out. Then when somebody follows the breadcrumbs and comments you begin to know if you are contributing anything. I’m busy laying the breadcrumbs.
