Can You Ever Run Out Of Content Ideas?

by theinfopreneur on January 1, 2010

I’ve been reading and paying way too much attention to the haters lately. Non of them directed at my site, but aimed at so called ‘meta-blogs‘ I hate this term, to me it’s used by jealous un-motivated people who blame the system for their own site failing. The rant was talking about how ‘meta-blogs‘, sites that are in a competitive market place, such as making money online, or enhance SEO etc. Blogs that follow the most used meta tags.

I don’t believe you could ever run out of things to write about IF you are passionate about the subject. For me, motivating others and achieving success (in what ever form) is all I want to do. If you are passionate, you can write about anything for a long time in massive quantity. There are a few things to bear in mind though;

  • Subject

Your subject or market place will dictate (to a certain extent) how often you post and how quickly that market changes. For example if you run a celebrity gossip type website, you’ll never run out of content due to the amount of drunk movie stars falling out of cabs or getting arrested etc, same goes for a political site. A motivation or making money online site may seem limited in it’s options initially, but it depends on how you approach it.

Take this site for example, over a hundred posts and still pumping them out at a rate of 14 a week. I like to think I approach things differently than others, which gives me the edge in producing so much content so often without ever coming to a dead end.

  • The Wheel

You can’t re-invent the wheel’ Not strictly true but there is a lesson in this. If you aren’t passionate about the subject you will struggle to write fresh and new content at a reasonable rate which could potentially lead to you re-wording the same types of posts over and over again.

There are several ways to avoid this, easiest one is be passionate about the subject matter. I love this site, which prevents my content from becoming stale. Inspiration and interaction will keep sparking new ideas. Help your readers and customers, they will provide most of your ideas for growth.

  • Innovation

Be inventive about how you go about things. If you run a make money online site, don’t just focus on the usual google ads posts. Think about new ways of doing it, some that haven’t been done before and may not work but write about it. If you own a gossip site about celebrities, aim for the exclusive scoop, focus on something that people just don’t write about. be unique in your delivery, just look at Allyn, Jordan and ExtremeJohn for great examples of this.

Conclusion, can you ever run out of content ideas? If you are in the right market for you, then no.

The one reason I prefer not to have a niche type blog is that my scope for posts are limitless. This means that I can post about almost anything and as long as I put my own voice to it I have no qualms about it not being accepted by my readers.

Hey Sire,

I don’t actually like the word niche I think it pigeon holes people into only talking about one thing, but you are 100% right that if you have your own voice, you will never run out of content.

Great job buddy

If people run out of ideas for their blogs, that just tells me either they’re not trying, or they’ve niched themselves so tightly that they never gave themselves a chance to succeed.

Hi James,
I’ve noticed in the personal development niche blogs in 2009 that minimalism was written about way too much. In the end I made a conscious decision not to write any posts about minimalism, as to avoid recycling content.

I think we have to watch out for recycling content from our own blog or from others.

I think as long as you can put your spin on a topic then others will find it interesting.

Isn’t that what we all (well 90%) do. Give our own opinions on things and explains topics as we understand it?

There are always ideas to write about but they need to be backed up by quality. Never write for the sake of it. What you write about needs to be relevant to your readers so to some degree you will be in niche. Unless you run a newspaper your readers will be visiting for specific reasons. It would be easy to churn out words but content is king if you are to keep your readers. You make a good point about the ‘celebrity website’ as really that is a news style report with a huge amount of news available. It takes a lot of work or more writers to add a lot of different quality content on a regular basis and that will take you away from a blog to a general website style.

Hi Roland, happy new year.

You made an important part about backing it up with quality.

If you write for the sake of updating the site, it will be noticed

Hmm, this is interesting to think about. From my perspective, most of my sites only get updated about 3x per year. Yep, once I get 35 or so juicy posts on a site, and the money starts to roll in, I see no reason to screw with it anymore.
Now for my “social” sites like my beer site, I do try to update that once per week. For me, I like to let a post “soak” for a while. The longer the soak, the more comments generated, and the more juice the post absorbs from the front page rank. I also have to figure that in my niche, my readers/viewers don’t come to the site everyday, rather about once a week to see what the new beer is they should try out.
As far as running out of content ideas, I figure there are 1400 indi brewers in the US so I should be good for a while.

I agree, if you’re absolutely passionate about the subject it’s impossible to run out of ideas. But that’s not to say it’s not impossible to run out of inspiration and sometimes, a little jolt in the right direction is all you need.

Google’s wonder wheel search feature is great to help you find inspiration – simple type in the key words and will give you a ‘mind map’ of related key words, which may give you new angle to approach your idea.

There are always things to blog about, but sometimes one loses inspiration or just has no energy or creativity. Bloggers can often suffer “writers block” where they just don’t have any inspiration or desire to generate content even though there is plenty. The opposite holds true as well where you can’t churn out posts fast enough. This is why it is imperative to keep a few posts on reserve for when you don’t have time, or inspiration for a post.

Having nearly 800 articles on DragonBlogger.com, 600+ on JustinGermino.com and over 550+ unique poems written on WandererThoughts.com, I have written almost 2,000 blog posts (not including the 30-50 guest posts and over 180 Associated Content articles. I don’t ever run out of things to blog about, but honestly there have been some weekends where I struggle to come up with something because I can suffer near burnout some weeks.

Especially when blogging is just a side hobby for me and I work a 60 hour a week day job, plus raise 2 kids with my wife.

PS, jelous is typo’d should be jealous.

I think the idea of a mind map is a great one – I have created one in MindManager and see it as a source for many a posts to come. As a new blogger, it’s easy to feel an endless supply of ideas bubbling up, but I can see where bloggers who have written thousands of posts would run out of steam. I wonder how people avoid repeating themselves? But on the other hand, I once heard Buddhist monk Cheri Huber answer the question, “Don’t you get bored saying the same things over and over again?” with, “To me, it’s fresh and new every time I say it.” Cheers to that! I hope I stay inspired and motivated by my passion for peace of mind.

I agree if you are passionate about something you will never run out of idea’s to write about. I also agree with some of the comments because thinking up content can sometimes be harder than usual. I am a new blogger so I may be inexperienced in using my creativity to an extent that is needed to rolling out fresh content. Aside from that this is another excellent post I can use to apply to the way I blog. Thanks and keep it up!
