This is a guest post from Justin over at DragonBlogger.com, if you haven’t already checked out his site (which I seriously doubt) read this and then get over there. Justin has a few different sites all of which doing really well, Justin over to you;
To try and combat writers block and burnout I will often scan media outlets as well as other bloggers websites and look for new blogging topics, after finding some interesting content I prioritize what to write about and in what order to better spread my blog posts around.
Topics that are “time critical” such as breaking news should always be posted immediately and any other posts you had scheduled should be pushed to make room for breaking news. I used to just post four to five posts a day early on in blogging, but ran out of material too quickly and found that I would rather post one consistent post and maybe one breaking news or current events type post as well.
Prioritize what posts should be in what order, sometimes posting about something a few weeks later is better than reporting it the day you read it. Examples include the following, I found a few good posts and articles on other bloggers. I may want to stagger my post that cites the article and links back to it a few days later or even a week. This can do several things, one the article may be fresh again and incite more interest, you aren’t competing in the moment against someone who just wrote the same type of information on the same day. Two by linking back to the original article you can give a boost to the writers content a week after it published, which can help revitalize an aging post (if you send enough backlink traffic).
I think informational articles should get the lowest priority (put on the back burner), ones that the information does not change day to day or week to week you can set to the back of the list so you can make room for more pressing and time critical articles. Examples would be my Earl Grey Tea Reviews article I wrote on my personal blog, it has nothing to do with a time critical event, and I scheduled it almost two weeks after I originally wrote the article.
I have always been a fan of saving a few articles in Draft Mode as well, keep them on reserve in case you have writers block, or need to donate an article for another blog as a guest post. By writing it in draft mode on your own blog first, you can format it how you want it to look and then just send the other blogger the HTML code so you know the tables, formatting come out right.
I share these tactics to prioritize your blog posts, ask yourself the following questions:
-
Does this article address a current event issue?
-
Is this article time sensitive?
-
Can this article be posted 1 week from now and still achieve the same effect?

This is very important and makes the difference between a successful blogger and a blogger wannabe – at least in my view. I am still struggling to create a more systematic time commitment fot blogging and a consistent way of producing content. Thanks for some very good suggestions to get better organized.

Nice post Justin.
I usually have around 10 posts written, edited and scheduled ready to go at any one time. I usually play about with which days they are released depending on what’s happen at the time and what maybe is a current hot topic.
If you write a lot, you end up creating a lot of “could be released at anytime” posts which can be dropped at any time when more high-priority posts surface.
Good tips!

Thank you both for your feedback, I am just trying to show how I blog in the hopes that others can benefit or correct and educate me if they have a more efficient way.

Hi DB,
Thanks for some really great, practical advice. You’ve shown me how I can up my game. Whilst I have lots of titles on draft (and therefore ideas) I’ve yet to get complete posts ready that far in advance. That said, a fortnight ago I was struggling to get one post a day out by bedtime. Now I’m usually able to do two and still have time for supper
In case there was any danger I might get complacent, you’ve given me a new goal to aim for.
Much appreciated, thank you

@Ben you are already ahead of the game, I rarely have more than 2 or 3 posts on draft, and lately I only am queued for 2-3 days ahead of myself. I try to write a weeks worth of posts every Sunday, but I am writing for 3 blogs, so I have to write 15 posts and 2 poems every Sunday to queue on all my blogs for a week.

Hey DB!
Uhm…. I don’t actually have any blog posts on draft at the moment *cough* I have about two weeks worth planned, but not actually written yet. I keep meaning to, but for the next few days at least I have to stick to my study schedule thing and finish my work before the semester ends.
At which point I’ll hide in my room and write a few – it’s a great idea, and thanks for the reminder! Serves as a kick up the ass to get moving

I struggle to keep a back log of draft posts, but I do have a backlog of ideas. This helps when I don’t know what to write about. Occasionally if I do have a backlog, I like to get it guest posted on someone else’s blog.

There’s all different kinds of ways to blog and once you find out what works for you just stick with it.
I will usually just live my life day by day and ideas come to me and I either decide to sit down right there and see if I can’t hammer out a new blog post or wait and come up with something later on.
This way I have everything ready to go and if there’s something I want to get right in right now I simply post it right away: example, my birthday post was the same day as another post I did. That kind of stuff.
Good article!

Thanks for the ideas on how to get better organized. With only 1 day under my belt, I must confess to not having a large supply of handy drafts, but I’m sure that will change. In the past I just got up in the morning and poked around the internet until something sparked my interest enough to get my brain working and writing. After reading the post and the comments, I think I’ll put out a little more effort to in creating more content. It occurs to me that if I get a cushion of future posts, then I have extra time to do some post polishing too. Nothing better than a nice shiny new post.

@Ray – I have a year under my belt and barely have any drafts left, as my day job been keeping me so busy I struggle to find time to maintain my blogs.
Everyone else, thanks for reading my article. I enjoyed being a guest blogger here on The Infopreneur and will try to have at least a few articles a month here.

Thanks for sharing this Justin. I particularly focus on non time sensitive stuff on my blog as I don’t have the time to post regularly. So the only way I can get regular articles is to plan ahead. You’ve given me a great idea for a guest post for James!
Thanks again!!
