Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) affects millions of people this time of year. Its dark, cold and wet and with the added pressure of debt your readers need something to bring them out of the gloom and doom and into the sun.
A light box is basically a super bright box that simulates the sun which gives SAD sufferers the feeling of being in a bright warm place.
- Ray of Light
A light box gives off an amazing amount of light. My wife suffers with SAD and 30 minutes in front of the light box gives her a different perspective on the day. Positivity, passion and drive are things your website should be emitting to your readers. They should be coming to you to feel better and be filled with a desire to succeed in what ever you talk about. If you have a guitar tutorial website and a reader just can’t get the finger position right, then you should be beaming advice and inspiration to them in such a powerful way it changes their entire mood.
- Warmth
One of the nicest things on a cold day is when the sun is shining through the window and you can feel the warmth of the rays on your face, you close your eyes and a little smile creeps into the corner of your mouth. When its dark cold and wet all you want is for the sun to shine, the sun is your friend who always manages to get you feeling better about yourself. You need to be the sun to your readers, your readers should be craving you and basing their holidays around you!
- Plug
The great thing about light boxes is they have a plug. Just pop it into the socket and you have instant sun, the happiness starts to swarm all over you in a familiar way. Make sure your site loads fast, don’t bog it down with heavy plug ins and pictures that are byte intensive. Readers want to see your site load in half a second, from the time it takes to click your link or type your url to looking back towards the top of their screen, you should be there, beaming bright.
- Portable
Light boxes are fairly small, a4 size and can definitely be taken anywhere you want, comes with a nice little handle and weighs less than a bag of sugar. Can your site go with your readers where ever they are? Is it cell phone friendly? Can they load it onto their iPhone or Blackberry? Do you have social networking share buttons placed around your site so they can share with their friends when they leave?
Before you ask no I’ve not come across a container full of light boxes that I need to get rid of. That said I hope this approach helps you to be there for your readers this winter.
What does everyone think?

Interesting that you post this the same day I follow you on Twitter
I manage a blog on how to manage a bipolar relationship and SAD is very common with relation to BPD, I haven’t heard of them until I started the site but for me, especially…this analogy rings true and close to home. Thank you for this and I look forward to future interactions.

I could relate to SAD when I leaved in a cold state, but now that I am in Florida that bad boy is gone! The constant sunlight keeps me going. Florida is a great place for an entrepreneur! Don’t mean to rub it in or anything, i swear.

Hey Alex,
Yeah it must be amazing, my wife keeps saying every winter she wants to move to a warm sunny place. We’re still getting snow and rain here

Just thinking about the snow and rain puts me in a slight depressed state. I recommend finding that sunny place.
