Small Sacrifice, Huge Gains

by theinfopreneur on December 26, 2009

I was talking to my wife this afternoon (who supports this website 100%) about the great reactions the Christmas day post and my free tutorial have been getting. While I was rambling in self importance I actually came up with some relevant points.

New websites such as this one (2 months old today) need to work twice as hard as David Risley who is an established celebrity profile in this market place and as such his website reap the rewards. I am sure David would be the first to say that you have to work hard when you start out. I work as hard as I can without compromising too much on my family life.

  • Time

When I work on this site I’ll admit I put in a lot of hours, but that’s the reason why I am flying up the ranks so quickly. You don’t have to do all your site content, promotion, emails etc in one 10 hour hit, break it up, especially if you are holding down a 9-5 job as well. When you get up in the morning before you go to work; have a shower then get dressed, put some coffee on and start making your breakfast, while you are waiting for your coffee to brew, switch your laptop or desktop on, grab your coffee or breakfast and eat, drink and do a little bit on your site, even if it’s just approve all the comments from the night before.

I could go on and on breaking your day down in order to save your time etc, but you get my point. By combining tasks and doing things a little faster you make more time to work on your site.

Additionally, I would really like to add, spend as much time as you possible can working on creating (good) content, making contacts and generally building your empire.

  • Luxury

I write most of my content in coffee shops so that incorporates one of the luxuries in my life, but I do sacrifice most of the other little pleasures in order to build my site in the strongest possible way. Night’s out, new releases at the cinema, weekend breaks, snowboarding all on hold until I have achieved my goals.

Don’t get me wrong I’m not saying have no life and ditch everything. What I am saying is, by sacrificing some of my lifestyle I now have time to work on the site. I haven’t sacrificed any time with my child or my wife, for me they are everything, but lose the things you wouldn’t do if you couldn’t afford it.

If you think about your life right now, what you did today or in the past week, what could you have done without in order to build your empire?

  • TV

Do you watch the latest movie, the latest episode of Flash Forward or the news religiously? How much work could you get done in 30 minutes or 2 hours? Does it really matter if you watch TV? If you use it as together time with your partner then use the time to work on your site with your laptop. I’ll leave the relationship politics to you, but it really does need to be done, sacrifice the little things to make the most of your dream.

  • Sleep

I’m not including sleep to start talking about how you need to start living on caffeine never getting a full nights sleep, but if you go to bed 30 minutes later and get up 30 minutes earlier, another small sacrifice becomes a huge gain on your site. Your website is your business and you need to treat it as such. It may not be taking or making any money, but by treating it like a professional company, you are going to enjoy success a lot quicker and for longer if you work as hard as you can.

I said earlier I work as hard as I can without compromising too much on my family life, hopefully the above illustrates how you can stay committed to your family, but by working so hard you are sacrificing an hour here and there to ultimately enjoy even more time when it all starts to pay off.

This is how I approach this website, it also helps that I’m obsessed with the site and it’s readers.

Anything you can do to chip away time working on your dreams and passions you should always do it.

I’ve got to be honest and say that my iPod Touch is an absolute god send! Take tonight for example – I’m sat watching a film with my good lady wife while at the same time approving comments on my site, posting comments on other great sites (including this one) and also RTing great content.

People could argue that this isn’t what is meant by spending quality time with my wife, but she would happily agree that it’s better to have me messing around on the iPod than have me sat in front of my many computer screens.

For me, putting in the extra time in pursuit of a dream or a passion is about how you maximise the downtime.

Hey Ben,

Yep same here, you gotta put the hours in plain and simple. FYI I think i’m watching the same film!

Wow! You must have a VERY understanding wife. If I tried to pull a stunt like that while supposedly having “quality” time with my wife, she’d snot me. And rightly so.

Quality time with family is just that, quality time with family. And unless your family is directly involved in what you are doing on your ‘puter, then the ‘puter should be OFF. (or at least you shouldn’t be anywhere near a keyboard or screen)

While I agree with you that family time is family time plain and simple, my wife understands the reason why I am working so hard.
We both had nothing as kids and I mean nothing.
A little bit of sacrifice means my family will never want for anything.

Thanks for taking the time to comment though Steve

Right now all of my free time goes to my site anyway. Obsessively too much if you ask me. I went to bed at 5 am this morning because I was tweaking stuff on my site and reading wordpress tutorials. :D

It’s tough at the start, but once you get the ball rolling, it’s just a case of keeping up with the speed of it all!

you’re doing great, keep up the good work

This is excellent advice. It all boils down to proper time management and prioritizing your life in such a way that would help you become successful, but not over compromise on the things and people in your life that matter.

Hi James,
I think I’m slowly getting better at committing more time to my niche. Part of my time has to be invested in actually studying books on personal development. It has a double benefit. It gives me ideas for blog posts and it gives me a good grounding in the knowledge necessary to succeed in my niche.

Self development is an excellent idea as you say it pays off by giving you inspiration for your site, which by the way is looking great!

Yeah Steve, I do have a very understanding wife! Lol

We had a chat about it all a while back after the amount of work I was doing was getting out of control. We decided that it would be better that I try to use the iPod more in the evenings than my laptop. She understands how much I work, even though she doesn’t like it all the time, but she knows I’m more socialable when I’m away from the laptop.

In fairness to me though, I generally do most of my work after she goes to bed. If I didn’t, I would be a dead man.

Hi Ben,

I think it’s important to remember why we do this, we all have goals and dreams, without hard work and little sacrifices those dreams become someone elses

Saw the link on Twitter for this article and just had to give it another read. I think you’re right; if you want to get ahead in blogging you have to work really hard, and that can mean sacrificing some things.

Though with regards to TV and that extra hours sleep – would you really miss it?

(also, officially started blogging today! Thank you for your articles, they helped make it a reality rather than a ’someday…’)

It’s true. It is the small sacrifices that make the difference. I’m working on my novel and having to find the balance between my new wife, my writing, my job, and the reading I want to do for fun. Not to mention my addiction to narrative TV.

I generally stay up later and take a few minutes here and there to get things done. My worst problem, though, is screwing around on Twitter or other websites instead of doing anything directly productive.

This blog is really coming together I must say. You are doing a good job here. Family time is just that: family time. I’m on my blog and working on marketing and writing up new content a lot. I need a better schedule myself and am always looking for ways of making one.

I have a lot of free time on my hands so I know I can be doing better than I am and I readily admit that. It all comes down to how much you want out of things and how much you put into them. Keep up the excellent work. Your blog is really coming together nicely.
