I recently got a @ tweet from ShareThis after I had a tweet conversation about deciding to stop using the ShareThis plugin in favour of SexyBookMarks. I was having a conversation with NotAProBlog (Jordan) about how sexybookmarks felt and looked better than the share this plugin. Please note that I used the ShareThis plugin to great effect and still really like it, I just think sexybookmarks suits my style more.
ShareThis then sent me an @tweet giving me advice how to change it to suit what I needed. They also give me an example of what it could look like.
This tweet surprised me massively, but it was a welcome surprise. I absolutely wanted to change my plugin back to sharethis straight away. If you help your readers like this, genuine and without prompting you are going to be remembered for being exactly that, helpful and proactive. By getting that tweet I wrote a whole post which is pretty much singing their praises, so get out their and help people without wanting anything in return.
- Retention
By helping your readers and even people who haven’t even found your site yet, you are going to stop the natural attrition rate that all websites deal with. You can keep the natural wastage of readers to near zero by helping them when they aren’t on your site reading your latest post. You can never help too much if you are helping in the right way.
People have to want help and they have to want to help themselves. If they are asking for help or admit they are struggling with something then give them advice without asking for anything in return.
I try and do it a lot, but it’s important to remember that not everyone wants help and not to spend too much time helping. Ultimately you need to make sure you have done all your jobs, before you go out and help others. Another important thing to remember is that readers are not stupid, they will know when someone is being false to be in their face.
If you have spare time on your hands, get out their and provide solutions.
What does everyone think?

Now that’s customer services!
The wife was fantasy house shopping on RightMove one night – so I tweeted it out. RightMove then tweeted me back saying we hoped that we found something funky for our fantasy budget! Love it!
Still on sexybookmarks thou!

Don’t really like the Sexy bookmarks as they are a bit hidden and can confuse people… share this is standardized and probably more user friendly I reckon.

Hi Jorgen,
I think it comes down to reader preference. I think most people like the addition on the site as the tweet button on sexybookmarks is already getting used even though I have the tweetmeme button

Your story illustrates the juice you are beginning to have on the web. If Share This is paying attention to you I think that speaks volumes regarding your reach.
I give credit to Share This for reacting quickly and providing an alternative to you.
Shouldn’t you guys be at the pub by now lol?

Hi Scott,
Yeah ShareThis did a massively nobel and clever thing when they contacted me. I give them major kudos for what they did and think it can prove an inspiration for us all when dealing with our readers or customers.

I’m not a fan of the Share This plugin. If my mouse runs over it accidentally, it sometimes pops up and blocks what I’m reading for several seconds.

That’s one of the other reasons I decided to change it.

Great advice from one who practices what they preach!!! If it weren’t for YOUR help in responding to little old me, just ONE reader, I don’t know where my inspiration would be right now!!! That’s what I call being faithful over the flock.
Keep it up bro. You’ve got some good stuff going for you.

More and more businesses are discovering the benefit of using Twitter to help customers, which has got to be a good thing and as James suggests, you can do the same by helping people with their problems.
There is of course another way you can help. You can help by getting your readers to help themselves. Don’t just provide answers, ask questions!

Why not help someone just because you can? If I can help someone else I will feel better about myself and I will also feel as though I’ve done something great and shared a bit of who I am with a bigger part of this huge world we live in.
No one is perfect and no one can surely do everything but doing something is always better than nothing. Go out there and help each other out. You’ll probably be surprised at your results!
This honestly touches the heart, James.

In life, we are told from a young age, that “sex sells.” Indeed, we all like sexy cars, sexy boats, planes, homes, the list is practically endless. But, “sexy bookmarks” ………….. let me get back to you with a fax on that one!
