Here is What I Have Done Today

by theinfopreneur on December 30, 2009

I talk a lot about the importance of getting out there and making a success of your website or business. In my post, you have to reply to everything, I talk about how I make it my priority to interact with as many people as I can on a daily basis, if it means I go to bed at 3am then so be it. No one else is going to write my posts or bring the readers in. I’m a one man show and this is how I do it every day.

I thought it would be a good motivator to show a detailed over view of what work I have done with this site in the last 24 hours, which has lead to 42 new comments on the site, 18 re-tweets and 12 new subscribers.

  • Interaction

I have spoken to 108 different people on twitter (either @’s or DM’s) replied to 32 emails (from 8 people) as a result of my I’ll Help Anyone post. I have also sent and received 24 text/sms messages for UK business owners who have read the site and with whom I had meetings with a week before Christmas in London. I am so passionate about the fact you have to talk to as many people as possible. It’s important to do this properly and don’t keep searching new people at the detriment of your existing readers or customers.

  • Posts

Published 2 new posts (including this one) to follow on from the three that were published yesterday. Both around 700-900 words. I’m committed to producing 14 posts a week so today was a standard day for me. I think it’s important to produce a high amount of quality content consistently. Pete Cashmore from mashable is the perfect example of this, he posted 7 times a day for a year, now he owns one of the biggest social media sites in the world.

  • Guest Post

I wrote a guest post about the importance of the cycle of writing and promoting, around 700 hundred words. Hopefully I’ll get the green light for this and I’ll let everyone know when it has been published. I decided to submit to a high traffic website in my market place to gain a bit more exposure. The person I chose to send it to I am in regular contact with so hopefully he won’t mind me cold sending. Just a quick point on guest posting, next year I plan on submitting a few posts a month to different sites, not just high ranking established sites, but readers of this site who are doing great work themselves.

  • Promotion

By promotion I really mean sociable as everything I have mentioned so far is all linked to promotion, but I have commented or tweeted 23 different websites. Not all high rollers like copyblogger, but readers of this site, sites I am interested in outside this market place. The comments I have left are (in my opinion) valuable and add to the original post. When you get out there and promote your site, make sure you do it properly. No ‘come check me out’, contribute and help others, if people like what you say, you get the result you want. On top of these comments, I have also posted 17 new threads on various different forums I contribute too.

Hey Shane,

I actually find I get better results from the ‘real’ sites likes your rather than the big hitters like problogger. Sire puts it right when he says, a lot comments on the big sites are just there to get hits, there it no through traffic and no contribution to each other AND no replies!

James, as usual you are motivating me. I must confess I have not been as social as you, and I will remedy that. I did however start a new blog today…one with a decidedly more commercial bent. Anyway, I just wanted you to know that I’m still here, and still being motivated and inspired by you. Thanks again,
Ray

This is hilarious.

In another of James’ posts – are you Aiming Too High – I alsked him for some specifics on how he has built up this blog in such a short period of time…

And this post, which I clicked on because I saw it in the sidebar, lists some of those specifics ( I still want to ask you about not only how you find the TIME to “respond to everything” but also how to go about ‘forum marketing’ as you intriduce here.

And another funny thing – this is the first time I’ve encountered Shane Hudson (see his comment above) and it just so happens that I have a browser window already open with Shane’s post – The Next Steps to Improving your Blog!

So maybe ‘The Secret’ is telling me something…maybe it is telling me something that, like Socrates said (my personal hero) – I already know…

And that is…I’m exactly where I need to be right here and now…

Hey Don,

ha ha great minds I suppose!

To be honest to answer everything, try and read it and reply in one hit, I don’t sit down and work on the site for 8 hours solid (truth be told it’s probably a lot more than than each day) I break it up. Take now for instance, it’s 0800hrs (London GMT) I’m approving the comments I got over night and replying, then I do all my twitter replies then emails.

Later on in the morning I’ll get on the social networks and forums and contribute and visit some sites and approve the comments I get between now and then.

In the afternoon I’ll start commenting on sites like yours and be socialable again and replying to emails etc.

In the evening I’ll spend about 4-5 hours doing the bulk of the work, writing new content for the site and a bit more promotion.

All in all it’s about 10 hours work a day, most of the time a lot more, if I work on my future plans for the site.

It’s your site you have to put the work in, anyone who says you can make it by spending two hours a day is miss leading you and probably already has an email list to promote their site.

Wow, James, you had a very productive day. Congrats!

It’s great to know how you are growing your blog step by step. I’m learning a lot from you. I love your perseverance and commitment.
As I said on another comment, your passion is contagious.

I wish you a prosperous and a happy new year buddy.

Hey James,
I want to sincerely say that you are as much as an inspiration to me as Gary Vaynerchuk. You two have a great work ethic.

Hey Gordie,

Thanks man Gary Vaynerchuk is someone I only came across the other day (I know where have I been) but it was great to hear he has the same work ethic as me, reply to everything and work as hard as possible.

James

Well done! I am convinced that your hard work will pay dividends. To be successful always calls for effort and there is no ‘easy way’ to avoid hard work. (Except pay someone else to do it!).

Keep going!

Very good information about replying and being helpful, the more reachable a person is the more people care about that person and take interest in reading or visiting his/her content.

I have the same approach, I have helped numerous people on SocialSpark and try to reply to all my commenters and visit their blogs and comment back, it is becoming increasingly hard though with time being so thin.
