Recently got asked this on Twitter, ‘How do you churn out so many post that have great content?‘ At first I couldn’t stop smiling, I love getting great comments, then as I sat basking in the glory of it all, I actually started to think why this simple site designed to help people is getting so popular, here’s what I came up with;
- Love It
You have to love what your talking about, If you don’t, it will show in your writing. You don’t necessarily have to be an expert in what ever field your website sits in, but you have to have 100% passion for it. Take this site for example, I love the posts, I love the way the site is clean and simple, I love the readers and the comments I get, I love visiting the sites of the people who leave comments, but most of all, I love what it stands for, Good, honest help for people who want it.
- Don’t be orientated by money
You can’t start a blog based website which is solely focused on making money. You WILL fail if you do this, some people call it meta-blogging, Copying successful websites, purely to make money. Don’t get me wrong you can make amazing money online, but you have to be passionate about the subject matter, For example you can’t start a car modifying blog asking for paid membership and selling eBooks, if you don’t know your inter-coolers from your exhausts, and not even interested in learning. Write about something your passionate about, the rest will follow.
- Become Obsessed
I have mild OCD anyway, but lucky for me it comes in really useful when trying to build up your site. I have sat on my laptop with my stats page open, constantly hitting refresh to see my hits going up and waiting for new comments, As soon as I get a spare minute, I’m on the site building it, or replying to emails or social networks, visiting my followers sites, interacting. I worry myself sometimes how obsessed I’ve become, but it seems to be working so far!
- Learn
No one knows everything, and no one was born knowing everything. You have to start somewhere, so learn from others. Learn from your readers, learn from people who are already successful in your market place. Don’t I repeat DON’T copy, you may survive for a while, just like at school, but when you get caught (and you will) Your site will come crashing down around you.
- Talk
Interact with your readers and followers, See what they really think of your site and the way you write, Visit their sites, reply to their status and tweets, visit their Diggs and watch their videos. You can’t write for an audience you don’t know!
Do I have any writing qualifications or background? Well clearly no, I have an IQ of 94, Dyslexia, OCD and no qualifications. What I do have is a real ability to market something, and 100% commitment that is almost scary. I love helping people and talking about the results. The real secret to writing is there is no secret, follow the simple rules above and your golden!

I couldn’t stop laughing. When you mentioned the OCD, Dyslexia, and no qualifications, I thought, “gee, this guys sounds like me!” I can’t even recall how many times I’ve sat at my computer refreshing my stats and checking for new comments.
Thanks so much for the honest and very helpful topic.

Agreed: James, you do have a talent for marketing!
My talent is smashing really difficult and technical topics into itty bitty pieces. Sometimes, it takes me more than an hour to write an article.
Actually, sometimes it takes 30 to 40 hours to write an article, depending on the topic and how accurate it needs to be.
One of my best articles, coauthored with 2 others, took 7 years to get published. That was a tough one. Felt like giving up multiple times.
