Yesterday was the first time I have received a guest post and after having the initial results in, I think now would be a good time to talk about it.
- 492 hits (In the 12 hours after it was published)
- 7 Re-Tweets
The Guest post was by Ben Lumley, His site is ranked by alexa at 3,497,178 and without doubt Ben benefited hugely from it as this site is ranked at 215,152, but did this site benefit, absolutely;
- New Readers
OK granted Ben’s site won’t have a huge following yet, But it does have readers, and more importantly those readers may have never even heard of this website. They do now!
- Fresh Content
Websites like this survive on fresh good content. The post Ben did was fantastically written talking about being the small fish in the big pond, it gave my readers another way of looking at things, and gives them fresh ideas. Ideas which are not mine, but they are on my website!
- Two sets of promotion
Ben promoted this post just as much as I did if not more. He promoted it because he is linking his name and work to this website which is great name dropping and affiliation for him, and I promoted it because its a fresh post for the site, more for the readers to get stuck into and it also advertises the fact people can guest post here.
- Boost in Traffic
Nearly 500 hits on one post in 12 hours is good for any website thats less than a month old (25 days old at the time or writing) but seen as nearly half of my hits click through onto other posts, its boosting my whole site not just one part of it.
Some people say only allow guest post from certain people, never in your market place, never anyone who has less traffic than you, and never if they have only been online a few months. ….. This is complete rubbish. As long as the article is well written and relevant, It doesn’t matter who they are or what they’re doing, You can’t lose, and remember you would love for someone to give you a chance.
What does everyone think?

Hi James, I think I agree with you in general. Guest posts are often a great idea. I don’t think the guest blogger needs to be in the exact same niche, but it can help. For example, celebrity blogging is clearly very different from what you’re blogging about. But, I would consider a guest by a celebrity blogger if it was about a topic that your readers were interested in – for example, “making money by celebrity blogging” or something.
I think your comment about introducing new readers is spot on.
I just started my own blog last week, so I’m trying to build up a bit of a bank of quality posts before I start heavily promoting with guest posts, but you can bet that I’ll be actively writing and soliciting guest posts soon!

Hey James!
Could you please do a “howto” post about this. I’m a complete WordPress n00b and I’d like to see the mechanics behind guest posting. Both from the point of view of the guest poster, and of the host blog.
Thanks, mate!

I am a huge fan of guest posting and utilize them in a big way on one of my blogs both to bring traffic in, spread the word about my blog and also allow other bloggers to do the same on mine.
I would like to recommend a service if I may – http://www.BlogSynergy.com.
It is a community of bloggers who are actively seeking guest posts and places to post their own content, I have been introduced to a number of bloggers through the site and would encourage others to use it too.

James,
I just started guest posting and ever since I have I feel that my overall traffic for my blog as gone up.
Another thing I noticed is that guest posting made me strive to write one of my best articles ever to make an impact and now I feel I could write more. For clarification, my blog is not about blogging, but the blog I guest posted on was and now I am wondering whether to also start a blog about blogging.
Not only do writing guest posts benefit your blog as a whole, but they also benefit you and your content.
Best Regards.
