4 Things We Can Learn From Santa

by theinfopreneur on November 30, 2009

All our favourite adverts are back on the TV and advent calenders are selling out fast, the jolly man in the big red suit is adding the finishing touches to all the toys. Here is a light hearted look on how we can improve our websites santa style

  • Time Management

Billions and I mean billions of toys need making every year. Not only does that take amazing timing but fantastic foresight. Kids change their mind more than the wind especially on the approach to Christmas, Santa predicts the exact toy every child in the world will want come that snow filled morning on the 25th. Being able to predict what your readers will want to read about will keep you ahead of the game, which will  able you to gauge the success of your predictions in your traffic stats.

Prediction is fantastic but it’s ultimately the control you want to get to, control what they want to read and you’ve cracked it. Santa isn’t a mind reader he is really controlling the market, he knows boys will be happy with a wooden soldier or a plane, and girls love dolls, Got your number Mr Claus!

  • Flexibility

Billions of toys in one night around the world, but it’s not as easy as all that (yeah I know I said easy when referring to the biggest postal requirement in the world), Think about it, you have loaded all these toys onto your sleigh and the first house you get to doesn’t have a chimney…. OK I’ll sneak through the front door letter box , OK but what about when you get to a block of flats, or for the travellers in tents, or the children sleeping while their parents are driving, not even mentioning the time zones!

A million and one obstacles to get over but he does it every year, but how does he do it? He’s positive, a positive attitude can overcome anything. Don’t be stumped by the slightest little thing that gets in your way, even if that obstacle looks impossible. Nothing, absolutely nothing is impossible, keep positive and focused on the job in hand.

  • Team Work

Santa is the front man of the organisation we all know that, but what about the reindeer, Mrs Claus, and the thousands of elf’s all helping get these toys out the door for Christmas eve. Even if you run a website that is a one person affair like most sites are these days, you have to be a team player.

Social networks are your elf’s, they help spread your word all over the world in a blink of an eye.

Email is your reindeer. You need to be able to contact your subscribers to get them to interact with your site and let them know about exciting things coming up.

And of course Mrs Claus is your website theme or software, a vital part of the process in which without her it wouldn’t exist.

  • Imagination

If all Santa did was send out in the post a load of wooden cars and a few dolls every year he wouldn’t be half as popular. Santa produces fresh new ideas every year, and gets people excited at the sheer site of him. That is the position you need to be in. He flys everywhere on a sleigh driven by reindeer for crying out loud, now I’m not saying go and get a great big red suit and grow a white beard but I am saying think about how you approach your site, are you just another website in the midst of millions of other websites. Or are you a great big fat jolly magic man?!

A festive light hearted post, but hopefully has some inspiration in there somewhere.

This is so cute! I love the elves being your social network. :)

And team work. So many people think that if they have a website that they run on their own, they’ve got it made, and the money will roll in. But you have to think about your customers/readers, and you have to cooperate with social networking and search engines, or no one will ever see your site.
