You’ve been reading up on how to become an InfoPreneur, and want to move away from your free WordPress.com site and move to a .org self hosted site.
Reason’s why you should move to self hosted site.
- You can use your own plugins
- Upload better themes (more on this)
- Change the code completely (if your technically minded)
Things you need.
- A host – Your site will be hosted on a server so you need to choose a reliable host provider that is also reasonable priced. I use BlueHost which at the time of writing costs $6.95 a month, unlimited hosting space, free domain etc etc, The best thing is it has a WordPress.org one click install. Which for me was perfect, as I like to have simple but effective tools to use.
- Domain Name – Either get it free with your host provider or buy an additional domain to future proof your site.
- Broadband – Obvious but just bear in mind if you have upload restrictions.

Step 1
- Decide on your host, and these days most of the big players have wordpress one click install, and install wordpress. Which ever provider you go with make sure you dont spend too much. Like I said I get unlimited bandwidth and all the additional features for under $7 a month. Most host providers give you a domain name for free too, so take advantage of it. Word of warning, if you have already purchased your domain name and its with a different host provider just change the server names, dont transfer the registrant as it will take an age and could slow the launch of your site.
Step 2
- Install wordpress. The latest version (at time of writing) is 2.8.5. As I said earlier most host providers have a one click install but if they dont it can be downloaded here, If for any reason your having to upload it your self then a detailed explaination can be found here.
Step 3
- Activate your wordpress account and your ready to go. There are a stack of free themes you can choose paid farms with a quick google search. (more on this)
Its as simple as that. If you need any help then the WordPress.org Forums are a great place to find it.
